He arrived in New York with his parents, Ernst Heinrich Kuhlmann and Elisabeth Fenncker, on 7 Jul 1832, aboard the brig Charlotte Louise, having departed from Bremen, Germany.5,19,20,21 The family settled first in Allentown, Pennsylvania.22,23
In the United States, the family returned to his father's birth surname, Kuhlmann, but he "Americanized" the spelling of both his first name and surname, using the spelling Frederick Kuhlman.3,24,25

He moved about 1844 to Wooster, Ohio, with his father, and perhaps with his mother, though it seems more likely she had died in Pennsylvania.29

As he climbed the ladder with a bucketful of red paint, the ladder broke and he tumbled headfirst into the open doorway of the outside stairway to the cellar. The paint landed on top of him, covering his face, long beard, clothing and hands. Those finding him covered in red were afraid he had suffered fatal injuries, but when the paint was removed and a doctor examined him no broken bones or internal injuries were found.47
