Mary Arizona Wellen was born in Mar 1873 in MarylandG.4,5,6
     Mary married Edward K. Flora, son of George Washington Flora and Mary Jane Eiker, on 21 Jul 1897 in Brunswick, Washington Co., MarylandG, with Rev. F B. Harvey officiating.7,8,9
     Mary and Edward appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brunswick, Frederick Co., Maryland G, enumerated 2 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Joseph, Ruth, and Mary were listed as living with them.13
     Mary and Edward moved their family to West Virginia about 1903.14 They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, on Laurell Ave. G, enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Joseph, Ruth, Mary, Mildred, Odessa, and Julia were listed as living with them.15
     Mary died on 22 Sep 1912 in Frederick Co., MarylandG, at age 39.10,11,12

Edward and Mary's eldest son, Joseph, was born three years before their marriage. The most likely explanation seems to be that he was adopted, though no record supporting that has been found. On the contrary, in the 1900 census he is shown as Edward's son, and when Edward and Mary filed delayed birth registrations for their children in 1944, Joseph was included, shown as their son. No original birth record for him can be found.

Narrative:

Joseph Elmer Flora was born on 5 Sep 1894 in Brunswick, Frederick Co., MarylandG.4,5,6
     He generally used his middle name, Elmer, and even used it in some official documents as an adult.17,18,19
     He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brunswick, Frederick Co., Maryland, G in the household of his parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.20
     He moved to West Virginia with his parents about 1903.21 He appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of his parents.22
     His mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Joseph was about 18 years old.23,24,25
     Joseph moved to Ohio by 1915.
     Joseph married first Nora Crystal Van Gorden, daughter of Henry Clinton Van Gorden and Mollie M. Millidge, on 2 Nov 1915 in Marion, OhioG, with the consent of her mother since she was underage, with Charles W. Haberman, justice of the peace, officiating.7,8,9
     Joseph registered for the draft for World War I on 5 Jun 1917, while living at 252 S. Pearl, Marion, OhioG, reporting he was employed as a clerk for Marion Steam Shovel Co., in Marion.18
     Joseph and Nora appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Marion, Marion Co., Ohio, at 217 Greenwood St. G, enumerated 17 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home, apparently half of a duplex. Their children June and Treva were listed as living with them.26
     He was a clerk when he first married, and a laborer at a sulky company in 1920. By 1930 he was a house painter, reporting in 1940 he had worked 49 hours the last week of March, and 37 weeks the prior year, earning $900.27,28,29,30
     Joseph and Nora appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, at 861 Fulton St. G, enumerated 8 Apr 1930, reporting they rented their home, for $35 per month, and owned a radio. Their children Treva and Betty were listed as living with them.31
     Joseph and Nora were divorced before 1938.10,11,12
     Joseph married second Pauline Louise Holliday, daughter of R. L. Holliday and Katherine Powell, on 8 Mar 1938 in Martinsburg, West VirginiaG, with Rev. Harry C Robey officiating.2,13
     Joseph and Pauline appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Washington, District of Columbia, at 1121 12th St. NW G, enumerated 27 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $28 per month, and that he had lived in Columbus, Ohio in 1935, and she had lived in Martinsburg, West Virginia.32
     Joseph registered for the draft for World War II on 27 Apr 1942, while living at 403 N. Fulton Ave., Baltimore, MarylandG, reporting he was employed by Howard Construction Co., in Baltimore.1
     His second wife died in 1982.33
     Joseph died in Jan 1987 at age 92.14,15 He was buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.16

Narrative:

Ruth P. Flora was born on 27 Dec 1897 in MarylandG.3,4,5
     She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brunswick, Frederick Co., Maryland, G in the household of her parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.15
     She moved to West Virginia with her parents about 1903.16 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of her parents.17
     Her mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Ruth was 14 years old.18,19,20
     Ruth married first Clyde C. Culipher, son of Commodore P. Culipher and Eula H. Markett, about 1914, according to her age at first marriage as reported in the 1930 census, though other evidence suggests it was later.6,7
     Ruth and Clyde apparently lived in Louisiana after their marriage, as their son was born there in 1918.
     They apparently moved to Maryland about 1920. By that time he was using the name Taylor James Wallace, and she then used that surname. They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Baltimore, Maryland, at 11 E. Centre G, reporting they were renting their home. The enumeration date was not recorded. Their son Gordon was listed as living with them.21
     After her husband was sent to the Maryland Penitentiary, Ruth moved back to Martinsburg where her step-grandmother, Charity Ann Merchant, and some of her sisters were living. By 1925 she was living with them at 108 Pennsylvania Ave., West VirginiaG.22 Her future husband, Lloyd Webster Grimm, and another man moved to the same address about 1925, though it is not clear whether he was boarding with them or living in a different unit of a multi-family building. He had moved elsewhere by 1927.23
     Her husband was paroled 5 Aug 1926 and joined her for a time as he also appears with her in 1927.24 They had all moved to 201 E. Union Ave.G by 1927. She, and her second husband continued to live at this address until about 1950, except for a brief period about 1930 when she was again living with her step-grandmother.25 It appears that he was soon in trouble with the law again, as he returned to prison by 1930.
     Her sister Mildred and her husband lived with her for a time about 1929.26 By then both Charity and Julia had moved to other locations.27
     Ruth appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, at 826 E. Maler Ave. G, enumerated 11 Apr 1930, reporting she was renting her home, for $26 per month, and did not own a radio. Her son Gordon was listed as living with her, as were her step-grandmother and Lloyd, her future husband, who was listed as a boarder.28
     Ruth and Taylor were divorced between 1930 and 1940.8
     Ruth appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, at 201 Union Ave. G, enumerated 11 Apr 1940, reporting she was renting her home, for $15 per month. Her future husband, Lloyd was listed as living with her, again shown as a boarder. They reported they had lived in the same house in 1935.29
     Ruth married second Lloyd Webster Grimm, son of Robert Edward Grimm and Nannie Kennedy Webster, about 1941.9,10,11
     She was a knitter in a hosiery mill after she returned to West Virginia. In 1940 she reported she had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and had worked 40 weeks the prior year, earning $640.30,31
     After their marriage, Ruth and Lloyd continued to live at 201 E. Union Ave., where she have been for many years.32 They moved to 722 AlbertG about 1951.33
     Ruth died in Nov 1986 at age 88.12,13 She was buried in Dec 1986 in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.14

Mary Gladys R. Flora was born on 30 Nov 1899 in Frederick Co., MarylandG.4,5,6
     She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brunswick, Frederick Co., Maryland, G in the household of her parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.2
     She moved to West Virginia with her parents about 1903.11 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of her parents.12
     Her mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Mary was 12 years old.13,14,15
     Mary married Alston Glenn Wolford, son of Charles Amos Wolford and Fannie Ellen McCleaf, on 17 Jul 1918 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MarylandG, with Rev. J. R. Gaar officiating.7,8,9
     Mary and Alston appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., West Virginia G, enumerated 15 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home. Their son Arnold was listed as living with them.16
     Mary and Alston appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Falling Waters, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, at Dam no. 5 Road G, enumerated 2 Apr 1930, reporting they rented their home, for $12 per month, and owned a radio. Their children Arnold, Louise, Meade, and Lewis were listed as living with them.17
     Mary and Alston appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Falling Waters, Berkeley Co., West Virginia G, enumerated 24 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $5 per month, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935. Their children Arnold, Louise, Meade, and Lewis were listed as living with them.18
     Mary and Alston were divorced before 1949.10
     Mary died on 5 Mar 1972 in Hopemont, Preston Co., West VirginiaG, at age 72.3 She was buried on 8 Mar 1972 in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.3

Mildred Virginia Flora was born on 12 Oct 1901 in Brunswick, Frederick Co., MarylandG.4,5,6,7
     She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of her parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.20
     She later told the story of quitting school at the age of eight to work in a sock mill and how they had given her a milk crate to stand on so she could do her job. In the 1910 census, taken when she was eight years old, she is reported to have attended school some time since the prior September. She must have left school soon after, if not actually before the census was taken. In the 1920 census she was reported to be a knitter at a hosiery mill.21,22,23
     Her mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Mildred was 10 years old.24,25,26
     Mildred appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, G in the household of Charity Ann Merchant, her father's step-mother.27
     Mildred married first Willard Francis Collier, son of Charles Wesley Collier and Annie Elizabeth Zimmerman, on 8 Oct 1921 in Martinsburg, West VirginiaG, with Rev. Roy Schmuchker officiating.8,9
     Mildred and Willard lived with her sister Ruth at 201 E. Union Ave., Martinsburg, West VirginiaG, for a time about 1929.28
     Mildred appeared with Willard and their daughter Betty, on the 1930 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, G in the household of Annie Elizabeth Zimmerman, his mother.29
     Mildred and Willard appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, at 511 W. Race G, enumerated 4 Apr 1940, reporting they were renting their home, for $20 per month. Their daughter Betty was listed as living with them, as were her husband, Delbert I. Hollis, and Willard's brothers Albert and Charles.30
     Mildred and Willard were divorced before 1947.10
     Mildred married second Merle Calvin Eaton, son of William G. Eaton and Margaret Etta Jackson, on 10 Apr 1948 in Wardensville, West VirginiaG, with Rev. Walter A. Bauman officiating, having obtained their license the prior September.11
     Mildred and Merle were divorced before 1952.12
     Mildred married third a Mr. Getz, before 1976, apparently, as her sister's obituary that year shows her with that surname. Other than her death records with that surname, no other record of that marriage or her husband have been found.13,14,15
     Mildred died on 24 Oct 1984 in Martinsburg, West VirginiaG, at age 83.16,17,18 She was buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.19

     She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of her parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.13
     Her mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Odessa was 7 years old.14,15,16
     Odessa appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, G in the household of Charity Ann Merchant, her father's step-mother.17
     Odessa married John William Weidman, son of Fredrick G. Weidman and Samantha Kisner, on 24 Dec 1921 in Martinsburg, West VirginiaG, after obtaining permission from her step-grandmother since she was a minor, with Frank Steelman officiating.8,9
     Odessa and John William Weidman lived at 212 N. High, MartinsburgG, for a time after their marriage.18 They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Berkeley Co., West Virginia G, enumerated 21 Apr 1930, reporting they were renting their home, for $7 per month. Their children William, Donald, Charles, Phyllis, and Helen were listed as living with them.19

     Odessa appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Berkeley Co., West Virginia G, enumerated 8 Apr 1940, reporting she was renting her home, for $10 per month, and had lived in the same town in 1935. Her children William, Donald, Charles, Phyllis, Helen, and Nancy were listed as living with her, as was Lee Weidman, her late husband's brother, a laborer on power lines.21
     By 1945 Odessa had moved to 515 N. Queen, MartinsburgG.22 By 1953 she and her daughter Helen had moved to 503 Bowers, MartinsburgG.23
     She was a knitter at Interwoven Mills for a time after their marriage. She stayed at home caring for her young children after her husband's death, but by 1945 was working as a cook. By 1953 she was a dietitian. She retired from the dietetic department at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in 1968.24,25
     Odessa died on 20 Mar 1976 in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG, at age 71.7,10 She was buried on 23 Mar 1976 in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.11,12

     She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, G in the household of her parents, Edward K. Flora and Mary Arizona Wellen.11
     Her mother died on 22 Sep 1912, when Julia was 5 years old.12,13,14 Julia appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, G in the household of Charity Ann Merchant, her father's step-mother.15
     They moved to 108 Pennsylvania Ave. G by 192216 and to 201 E. Union Ave. G by 1927.17 They moved to 116 E. Union Ave. G by 1929.18
     Julia and Robert Marion Palmer appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia, at 803 3rd St. G, enumerated 14 Apr 1930, shown as married. They report they rented their home, for $12.00 per month, and did not own a radio. Their children Jean and Doris were listed as living with them, as were his aunt, Mary Palmer, and a cousin, apparently her son, Robert, age 6.19
     Julia and Robert, son of James H. Mingle and Catherine Geneive Palmer, were officially married on 10 May 1930 in Gettysburg, PennsylvaniaG, with Rev. Edward H. Jones officiating. They reported in the 1930 census that each had married at age 19, but Julia was listed in the 1928 and 1929 city directories under her maiden name.7,8,9

     She was working as a knitter in a hosiery mill by 1940, when she reported she had worked 40 hours the last week of March, and 30 weeks the prior year, earning $550.21
     Julia died on 15 Jul 1985 at age 78.6 She was buried in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West VirginiaG.10

All available records show that Jean and Doris were the children of both Julia and Robert, but they were born five and two years, respectively, before their parents' official marriage. While the parents each claimed in 1930 to have been married at age 19, no evidence of a marriage then has been found, and she was using her maiden name as late as 1929.
