Narrative:

Margaret Flora was born about 1 Aug 1823 in PennsylvaniaG.4,5,6 Her name at birth may have been Leah Margaret, as that is how her brother addressed her in his will. However every record as an adult shows her given name as Margaret.12
     She was probably the female age 5 to 10 listed in the household of her father, George Flora, in the 1830 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., PennsylvaniaG.13 She was probably one of the two females age 15 to 20 listed in the household of her father in the 1840 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., PennsylvaniaG.14
     Margaret married John A. Vallance.7,8,9
     Margaret and John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Licking Creek Twp., Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 17 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $300. Their children George, Rebecca, and Robert were listed as living with them.15
     Her husband apparently died about 1860.16,17 She managed the family farm after the death of her husband, with the aid of her teenage son George. By 1870 she was working as a domestic servant.18,19
     Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Licking Creek Twp., Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 2 Aug 1860, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $176. Her children George, Rebecca, Robert, Emma, and Virginia were listed as living with her, as was Elizabeth Wadells, age 17, listed as a servant.3
     Margaret appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 21 Jul 1870, in the household of Thomas Patterson, an apparently prosperous dry goods merchant. Her daughter Virginia was listed as living with her.20
     Margaret was named an heir in the will of Joseph M. Flora, her brother, dated 29 May 1877 in FunkstownG, to receive upon the death or re-marriage of George's widow half of the property remaining after their brother George received the real estate, to be shared with her sister Catherine.21
     Margaret appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Mt. Holly Springs, Cumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG, in the household of her daughter Virginia and her husband, William H. Peffer.22
     Margaret died on 16 Feb 1893 at age ~69.10,11 She was buried in Mount Holly Springs Cemetery, Mt. Holly Springs, Cumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG.10,11

     John and Margaret appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Licking Creek Twp., Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 17 Aug 1850, reporting real estate valued at $300. Their children George, Rebecca, and Robert were listed as living with them.1
     He was a farmer.1
     John apparently died about 1860 at age ~44, as he does not appear with the family in the 1860 census, and no further record of him has been found. Unsourced online trees show his death as 3 Jul 1860, which if correct means he should have appeared on that census, which was supposed to have been as of 1 Jul 1860.8,9

     He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, George Flora, in the 1840 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., PennsylvaniaG.14
     George appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 19 Jul 1850, in the household of Mark Dickson, an inn keeper, and his family. He was one of six people listed with various surnames, all apparently boarders at the inn.15
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, in the household of his parents, George Flora and Rebecca Simpson.16
     George married first Mary Jane Eiker, daughter of Martha, before 1863.7,8,9
     George registered for the draft for the Civil War, appearing on the register dated on 31 Jul 1863, while living in Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PennsylvaniaG, reporting he was employed as a laborer.17
     George and Mary moved to Maryland about 1869 with their infant son Edward. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., MarylandG, enumerated 27 Jun 1870, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $400. Their son Edward was listed as living with them.18
     George was named an heir in the will of Joseph M. Flora, his brother, dated 29 May 1877 in FunkstownG, to receive upon the death of George's widow all his real property in Funkstown.19 George owned his brother a note which he repaid to his executor, totaling $255 with interest.20
     George and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland, on High St. G, enumerated 1 Jun 1880. Their children Edward and Carrie were listed as living with them.21
     His wife died on 25 Mar 1883.22
     George moved to Winchester, VirginiaG, with his daughter Carrie, presumably before 1889 when he married his second wife there.
     George married second Charity Ann Merchant, daughter of John Merchant and Ellen Catherine Allman, on 19 Dec 1889 in Winchester, VirginiaG.10,11,12
     George and Charity appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Winchester, Virginia, at 441 Fairmont Ave. G, enumerated 13 Jun 1900, reporting they were renting their home. Edward McPhail, an 83-year-old bank official, was listed as boarding with them.23
     He was a laborer in 1850, and a coach driver by 1860. He was a brakeman on a railroad by 1870. By 1900, at age 68, he was a railroad agent.24,25,26,27,28
     George died on 8 Jun 1904 at age 72.4 He was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Chambersburg, PennsylvaniaG.13

He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., MarylandG, in the household of his parents.14 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Hagerstown, Washington Co., Maryland, G in the household of his parents.15
     Edward married first Mary Arizona Wellen on 21 Jul 1897 in Brunswick, Washington Co., MarylandG, with Rev. F B. Harvey officiating.7,8,9
     Edward and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Brunswick, Frederick Co., Maryland G, enumerated 2 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Joseph, Ruth, and Mary were listed as living with them.16
     Edward and Mary moved their family to West Virginia about 1903.17 They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., West Virginia, on Laurell Ave. G, enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Joseph, Ruth, Mary, Mildred, Odessa, and Julia were listed as living with them.18
     His wife died on 22 Sep 1912 in Frederick Co., MarylandG.19,3,20
     Edward returned to Maryland by 1920. Edward appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland G, enumerated 24 Jan 1920, as a boarder in the household of Charles Bossley and his family. Charles also worked on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.21
     Edward married second Martha A. Little, daughter of Nimrod H. Little and Zelotta Huff, on 16 Aug 1921 in Somerset, PennsylvaniaG, with Rev. Edgar F. Haffmeir officiating.10,11
     Edward and Martha appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Cumberland, Allegany Co., Maryland, at 309 Arch St. G, enumerated 5 Apr 1930, reporting that they were renting their home, for $25 per month, and owned a radio. Mary, her daughter by her prior marriage, and her husband Ercel J. McDonald were listed as living with them, as was Betty L. Thorpe, age 5, who was listed as a boarder.22
     He was a brakeman on a railroad in 1900, and a laborer on a railroad by 1910. By 1920 he was a blacksmith for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. In 1930 he was listed as a blacksmith's helper.23,24,25,26,27

Edward and Mary's eldest son, Joseph, was born three years before their marriage. The most likely explanation seems to be that he was adopted, though no record supporting that has been found. On the contrary, in the 1900 census he is shown as Edward's son, and when Edward and Mary filed delayed birth registrations for their children in 1944, Joseph was included, shown as their son. No original birth record for him can be found.

     He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, George Flora, in the 1840 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., PennsylvaniaG.13
     John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 19 Jul 1850, in the household of Richard Allender, a wagon maker, and his family. John is also listed as a wagon maker, though at age 16 he was more likely an apprentice or helper. His parents were apparently living close by as they were listed next in the census record.14
     John moved to Missouri before 1860. Apparently building on his training as a wagon maker he took up carpentry, a trade he pursued most of his life.15,16,17,18,19
