16 The 21st Cavalry, also known as the 182nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, was originally organized in Jul and Aug 1863 for six month's service, was re-organized in Jan 1864 as it gathered near Chambersburg, for three year's service. Those not re-enlisting were replaced with new recruits, including George. The regiment was ordered to Washington about the middle of May. On arrival it was dismounted and equipped as infantry. and joined the Army of the Potomac. It arrived at the front 1 Jun 1864 and saw heavy action at Cold Harbor and Petersburg, and other battles. On 4 Dec 1864 Co. E was detailed to the headquarters of Sixth Corps where it remained until the close of its service.
