Narrative:

Giles Akin Cobb was born on 15 Mar 1857 in Lyon Co., KentuckyG.5,6,7
He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, in the household of his parents, Thomas Jefferson Cobb and Almeda Glenn.16,17 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eddyville, Lyon Co., KentuckyG, in the household of his parents.18
He was named an executor in the will of his father, Thomas Jefferson Cobb, dated 14 Aug 1879, along with his brother, Henry, to advise their mother in her role as executrix, or to serve as alternates in the event of her death.19
He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Eddyville, Kentucky in the household of his parents.20
On 11 Nov 1884 Giles bought the undivided interests of his brother Henry and his sister Mary in their father's home place for $600 each. He paid Mary and her husband $400 in cash, and two notes for $100 each, one due 1 Apr 1885 and the other a year later. They were recorded as paid off 17 Jan 1887. He paid Henry $100 in cash, a note for $150 due 1 Apr 1885, and a second for $350 due 1 Jan 1887. They were recorded as paid 28 May 1920.21 He bought the interest of his brother Jefferson 25 Feb 1886, for $500.22
Giles married first Adeline M. Cash, daughter of William Cash Jr. and Mary E. Holloway, on 7 Oct 1885 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Kuttawa, Lyon Co., KentuckyG, with Rev. J. L. Edrington, officiating.8,9
His wife died on 22 Mar 1894.23
Giles married second Mary Dean Adamson, daughter of George Warner Adamson and Mary Louise Dean, on 28 Aug 1895 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, at her father's home.10,9,11
Giles and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Kuttawa, Lyon Co., Kentucky G, enumerated 20 Jun 1900, reporting that the family owned its farm, free of mortgage. His children by his previous marriage, Lucille, Mary, and William, were listed as living with them, as were Charles and Fanny Crider, listed as a hired hand and servant, respectively, Thomas Pallard, a servant at age 6, and Eugene Crider, another hired hand. Apparently his brother Jefferson and his family lived nearby, as they are listed as the preceding household.24
He was a farmer in KentuckyG.25,26
Giles and Mary moved to Carmen, OklahomaG, on 9 Apr 1905.27 They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Carmen, Alfalfa Co., Oklahoma G, at Fifteen St., enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting that the family owned its home, free of mortgage. His daughters by his prior marriage, Lucille and Mary, were listed as living with them.28
William Wallace Cobb, son of Giles' son William Francis, came to live with Giles and Mary at the age of three months, after the death of his mother. The child's father was working on a railroad, which required him to travel around Oklahoma, and he could not care for the infant. When the father remarried in 1914, Mary wanted to keep the baby and apparently the father and his new wife agreed to that, so the child was raised by his grandparents.29,30
Giles and Mary moved to San Antonio, TexasG, for a time around 1920, but apparently returned to Carmen shortly afterwards.31 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of San Antonio, Bexar Co., Texas, at 815 Ave. D G, enumerated 3 Jan 1920, reporting that they rented their home, apparently a unit in a four-family building. Their grandson, William, was listed as living with them.32
He reported his occupation as a laborer on gardens in 1910 in Oklahoma. He was a farmer in Texas.33,34
On 5 Apr 1923 Giles was granted a patent for 189 acres in Ochiltree Co., TexasG, but the grant was actually issued to A. S. Parrish, indicating that he had purchased the rights before the grant was final.35
Giles died on 7 Aug 1923 in Pawnee, OklahomaG, at age 66, at the home of his daughter Lucille and her husband.12,13,14 He was buried on 9 Aug 1923 in Carmen Cemetery, Carmen, Alfalfa Co., OklahomaG, with his second wife.15

Willis Berry Cobb1,2

ID# 15453, (1836 - abt 1870)

Parents:

FatherCaleb Clark Cobb (25 Dec 1797 - 19 Nov 1867)
MotherLouisa Berry Long (1812 - 1881)
Chart MembershipDescendants of Gideon Cobb

Key Events:

Birth: 1836, Eddyville, Kentucky,3,4
Death: abt 1870, El Paso, Texas,5

Narrative:

Willis Berry Cobb was born in 1836 in Eddyville, KentuckyG.3,4
He was probably the male under age 5 listed in the household of his mother, Louisa Berry Long, in the 1840 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.6
Willis has not been found in the 1850 or 1860 censuses, unless he was the "John C. Cobb," age 13, listed with his brother Gideon in his father's household in 1850. The listing appears as if "John" was Caleb's son, but why he might be listed by that name is a mystery.7

Civil War Service --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Willis enlisted as a private in Co. D, 3rd. Regiment Kentucky Infantry on 5 Aug 1861, at Camp Boone, TennesseeG. The Regiment took an active part in the Battle of Shiloh where it reported 174 casualties. It lost 26 men at Baton Rouge, then participated in various conflicts around Vicksburg and Jackson. After Willis left the unit it was mounted and was then known as 3rd. Regiment Kentucky Mounted Infantry.8,9
Willis was charged with "conduct subversive of order and military discipline and contrary to army regulations" on 3 Jan 1862 while it Camp No. 4 near Bowling Green, KentuckyG. The charge was that he had gotten drunk the prior Christmas morning and "engaged in sundry fights and was very riotous and boisterous in manner," and the same day had stuck another private with a hatchet with malicious intent. At a regimental court the following day he plead not guilty, but after the testimony of several witnesses, and making no defense, he was convicted of both charges. He was sentenced to be marched without arms from right to left and left to right in front of the regiment, guarded by a noncommissioned officer and a file of men at a charge bayonet.10
He was on sick leave from 12 Nov until 20 Dec 1862. It being "impractical to take rations in kind" he was paid 75 cents per day, a total of $27, as compensation. Near the end of 1863 he was charged $40 for the loss of 40 rounds and a carbine.11
On 1 Feb 1864 Stephen R. Mallory, Secretary of the Navy, wrote to James A. Seddon, Secretary of War, stating that Willis had been appointed assistant paymaster in the Navy, and requesting his discharge from the Army. He said that Willis was then in Richmond, VirginiaG, on furlough and his services were required at once. The transfer was completed 5 Feb 1864.12,13 His appointment to the rank of assistant paymaster was confirmed by the Confederate Senate on 2 Jun 1864.14
Willis served on the C. S. S. Torpedo, an iron screw steamer, tug/tender, in the James River Squadron in 1864. On 16 Jul 1864 he wrote a letter to the first auditor explaining he had paid the mother of a deceased sailor from the Torpedo under orders from Commander Hunter Davidson, then learned he should have waited for an administrator to be sworn.15,16
Service records for Confederate Navy personnel have not survived, so we had few details about Willis's service in the Navy. It is clear that his role was a significant one. For example, the statement of his accounts for the second quarter of 1864 shows he received drafts from the Treasurer totaling $15,000 for "Pay for the Navy," of which he disbursed $8,600 including payrolls, clothing and small stores. He received a like amount for "Submarine Batteries" and processed vouchers exceeding that amount.17
Willis was captured 3 Apr 1865 at RichmondG, and paroled at Richmond 19 May 1865.15,18

Moving to Texas? --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

According to family lore he moved to El Paso, TexasG, and became a school teacher. Supposedly he ran for an office there and was insulted by his opponent. He then struck his opponent in the face, who in turn shot and killed him.19
El Paso was a frontier town at the time, and no contemporary sources have been found to verify the story. A search of El Paso Co. tax lists from 1867 through 1881 failed to find him listed, nor does he appear in indexes of tax lists elsewhere in Texas, but neither has any further record of him been found in Kentucky or elsewhere.
According to this same family records his death happened in 1870.
There is a W. N. Cobb listed on the 1870 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., KentuckyG, in the household of his mother, who, except for the wrong middle initial, appears to be him. If it was him, at least the death date mentioned in the family lore would appear to be incorrect.20
Willis died about 1870 in El Paso, TexasG, at age ~34, according to family lore.5

Samuel C. Clark1,2

ID# 15459, (btn 1765 and 1775 - bef 1828)

Key Events:

Birth: btn 1765 and 1775,3,4
Marriage: Persly (b. abt 1774, d. 22 Oct 1801)5
Death: bef Nov 1828,6

Narrative:

Samuel C. Clark was born between 1765 and 1775.3,4
Samuel married Persly.5 Nothing is known of Samuel's ancestry. He would seem to have been a relative of Modena Chittenden Clark because of his close association with her husband in Eddyville, and the fact that he lived with them the remainder of his life after his wife died. But research of her family as failed to identify any connection. Her siblings are believed to be known, and he is not among them. But it appears that she may have had first cousins who are not known.
He came to Eddyville, KentuckyG, as part of the group from Vermont led by Matthew Lyon. He was apparently part of the first party, which arrived in the spring of 1800, as he was well established by the time the second party arrived 15 Jun 1801.7,8,9 (For details, please see The Trek from Vermont to the Kentucky Wilderness.)
Samuel seems to have taken an active part in his adopted community. On 7 Jul 1801 he was appointed one of the appraisers for an estate. On 2 Nov appointed surveyor of the road from Eddyville to Eddy Creek, and on 7 Jun 1803 for the road from Eddyville to Lick Creek.10 At the Nov 1809 term of the Caldwell Co. Court he along with Gideon Dyer Cobb, Elijah George Galusha Jr. and John Bradley posted a bond to build a brick court house in Eddyville for the new county of Caldwell.11,12 (For more examples, see the extracted County Court Orders.)
On 7 Jul 1801 Samuel's application for a grant of 400 acres in Livingston Co., KentuckyG, was approved by the county court. But he did not make the required payments, so the request lapsed. While no deed has been found, he seems to have already purchased 200 acres on Eddy Creek. On the same day the County Court issued a writ of ad quod damnum for a water saw mill he wanted to build on this land, with the sheriff to summon twelve fit persons to examine the premises. The following month the jury reported that the mill dam would not harm any neighbors and he was authorized to build the mill.13,14,15
He was appointed jailor for Livingston Co. on 2 Apr 1805. On 1 Dec 1806 he and two others were appointed inspectors for the Eddyville ware house. He had also been appointed constable by this time.16
On 27 Aug 1805, Samuel in partnership with Gideon Dyer Cobb, purchased lots 12 and 32, on Water, Franklin, and 2nd Steets in EddyvilleG, adjacent to Gideon's home and tavern.17,18 Samuel must have moved in with Gideon and his family by 1807.19 On 7 Feb 1809 the two of them obtained a license to operate a tavern in their home, and apparently they operated it jointly. The tavern seems to have been a more welcoming in cold weather than the half-finished courthouse, as the county court for newly formed Caldwell Co. adjourned to there on at least six occasions in the winter months from 1810 through 1815.20,21 He was probably one of the two males age 26 to 45 listed in the household of Gideon Dyer Cobb, in the 1810 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.22,23
He was appointed constable for the new county on 7 May 1810. On 23 May 1814 he was appointed jailor, and required to execute a $1,000 bond. Two months later he was appointed keeper of the stray pen.24
On 12 May 1814 Gideon's brother Joshua, of Greene Co., PennsylvaniaG, gave their younger brother John a power of attorney to recover debts owed to him by Cobb & Clark. There is no record of what those debts were.25 On 25 Dec 1815 Samuel sold his interest in all four lots to Gideon for $500.26
He was replaced as jailor in Dec 1816, "dismissed from office for cruel and inhumane treatment toward a prisoner now Jail in this County," and ordered to deliver the keys to the jail, courthouse and stray pen to his successor. That did not however end his law enforcement career, as on 25 Aug 1817 he was re-appointed as constable, and again in 1818 and 1820, posting another $1,000 bond each time. He resigned that postion in 1821. He was commissioner of taxes for one constable's district in 1820, for which he was paid $35 for 35 days work.27
Samuel is probably one of the two males over age 45 listed in the household of Gideon Dyer Cobb in the 1820 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.28
Samuel sold a parcel of land and lot no. 67 in EddyvilleG to Caleb Clark Cobb on 27 Jun 1824, for $300.29
He was reported by Congressman Chittenden Lyon in 1828 as "poor" and having "lost one leg, amputated close up to the body." After he died later that year Gideon Cobb was paid $27 for his burial and other expenses.30,31
     Samuel died before Nov 1828.6

      Children with Persly

One or both of the unknown girls in the Cobb household in the 1810 and 1820 census, where Samuel was then living, may have been daughters of Samuel and Persly.
