Narrative:

Louisa Berry Long was born in 1812 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.4,5,6
Her father died in Mar or Apr 1817, when Louisa was about 5 years old.11 She was probably one of the three females under age 10 listed in the household of her mother, Sarah Graham, in the 1820 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.12
She was probably the female age 15 to 20 listed in the household of her mother, Sarah Graham, in the 1830 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.13
Louisa appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Willis), one female age 20 to 30 (herself), and one male slave age 10 to 24. Her mother's household is apparently nearby, as she was listed next in the census record.14

Her Mysterious Relationship with Caleb Cobb --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

The relationship between Louisa and Caleb seems beset with mysteries. First, there is a series of transactions involving land left by her late father to his widow and children. The purchases started about the time of the birth of their first son, while she was still apparently living on the property with or near her mother. It seems Caleb set about acquiring the rights of all the heirs, apparently expending some effort to do so. On 15 Jul 1836 he purchased from Louisa's sister Maria and her husband, for $50, their right as "one of the legatees of Griffin Long desc'd." to 400 ac. on Spring Creek and the waters of Livingston Creek. On 26 Oct 1836 he purchased from Sarah, Long's widow, her right of dower on the same property, for $100, noting that she then lived there. On 26 Oct 1836 he purchased Louisa's rights as one of the legatees, for $70.15
On 17 Jul 1841 he sold five acres of apparently the same 400-acre parcel to Daniel Jarrett for $25. He sold half the property to his two brothers as part of the 2 Aug 1841 sale of 18 different parcels, and a week later sold the other half to Louisa for $200, in neither case mentioning the previous sale of five acres. Then, on 8 Dec 1843, he obtained for $80 what appears to be further title to the same property, the rights of Thomas Long, of Sangamon Co, Illinois, which he had obtained from Louisa's sisters Eliza and Melvilla and their husbands. In that deed the tract was described a on the head of Spring Creek, belonging to heirs of Griffing Long desc'd.," the proper boundaries not known to the parities and undivided," reserving the one-third part which was the widow's right of dower. Was Caleb clearing the title to the land he had already sold, as he would have been required to do if the title became questionable? Why did he go to such trouble obtain the land then sell half of it back to Louisa? Was the other half valuable for the iron operations? Did she want it to return to her home place, or perhaps because her mother was still living there?16
Then, three years before their marriage, Louisa appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, in the household of Caleb Clark Cobb, with Sarah Graham, her mother, and their son Gideon.17
Caleb and Louisa's relationship seems to have been awkward for the family. A well-researched family history by Caleb's granddaughter-in-law, based on extensive contacts with older family members as well as written sources, states that after his first wife's death he "moved to Dycusburg and married Louisa Long, and had by her one son Gideon. They then moved to Crittenden Furnaces..." The account ignores the fact that this son predated the marriage by seven years, and that they had apparently been living together in Caldwell Co. for some years before the marriage. It also omits mention of their eariler son and their daughter Belle, who was born after the marriage, but who may have died young.18
Louisa married Caleb Clark Cobb, son of Gideon Dyer Cobb and Modena Chittenden Clark, on 30 Jan 1853 in Crittenden Co., KentuckyG, with Collin Hodge officiating.7,8

Settling in DycusburgG --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Louisa and Caleb appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 13 Jul 1860, reporting no real estate, but $500 in personal estate. Their children Gideon and Belle were listed as living with them, They were apparently living near his brother Gideon as his household was listed second preceding in the record.19,20
Her husband died on 19 Nov 1867 in Crittenden Furnaces, Crittenden Co., KentuckyG.21,22,23
In the inventory of her husband's estate Louisa had set aside items valued at $534.25. They included livestock – a horse valued at $25, two cows and calves at $40, all the poultry at $7 and a saddle and bridle at $33; furnishings – a bed and furnishings at $90, spinning wheel at $2, a sewing machine at $10, and carpeting at $200; as well as provisions including animal feed for a year, at $100. At the sale of items not set aside for her, she bought additional furnishings, including tables and chairs.24
On 12 Mar 1869 Louisa sold the portion of her father's land in Lyon Co.G that her late husband had sold to her in 1841, selling it to Samuel H. Cassidy for $1,300.25 On 25 May 1869 she purchased two lots in Dycusburg from Samuel H. Cassidy and his wife Narcissa, for $1,000, thus apparently trading the acreage for the two town lots. One was part of lot no. 15, on Main St., and the second was in the section known as Jacob's addition to the town.26
Louisa appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 9 Aug 1870, reporting her occupation as farmer, but reporting no real or personal estate owned. Her children Willis and Gideon were listed as living with her, as were John and Mary E. Charles and their family, whose relationship to her, if any, is unknown.27
On 1 Sep 1871 Louisa sold a small tract in Crittenden Co.G to R. H. Brown for $100. The exact size is not given, but it appears to be about a quarter acre.28 On 21 Dec 1871 she sold the 131-acre parcel in Lyon Co.G patented to by her father, but not granted until after his death. She sold it to George T. Hays of Vanderberg Co. Indiana for $105.50.29
Louisa reportedly moved to IllinoisG after the death of her husband and re-married, but no further record has been found.30
Louisa died in 1881 at age ~69.9,10

Children:
      Children with Caleb Clark Cobb

According to family documents, supported by their appearance in census records and Gideon's marriage record, Willis and Gideon were sons of Caleb and Louisa even though they were born many years before the parents' marriage. Belle, born after their marriage, also seems to have been their child but based only on her presence in their household in 1860. No further record of Belle has been found to prove or disprove this assumption.31,32,33

Sarah Graham was born about 1780 in Jefferson Co., KentuckyG.4,5
Sarah married Griffin Long on 27 Aug 1801 in Nelson Co., KentuckyG.1,6,7
Sarah and Griffin moved to Livingston Co.G shortly after their marriage. She was probably the female age 16 to 26 listed in the household of her husband, Griffin Long, in the 1810 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.8
She was named an heir in the will of her husband, dated 9 Mar 1817, in which she was to retain possession of his plantation as long as she remained single and raised the children there.9
Her husband died in Mar or Apr 1817, probably in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.10
Sarah appeared on the 1820 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, listed as Sarah Doom. By some reports her adoptive father was named Doom, but why she was listed by her "maiden" name is unknown. The household consisted of one white male under age 10 (unknown), three white females under age 10 (daughters Louisa, Maria, and Melvilla), two age 10 to 16 (Matilda and Eliza), one age 26 to 45 (herself.)11
Sarah appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (unknown), one female age 15 to 20 (daughter Louisa), and one age 40 to 50 (herself.)12

One member of the household was employed in the "learned professions and engineers." Was Sarah a teacher? Her daughter Louisa apparently lived nearby, as her household is listed as the preceding one on the record.14
Sarah appeared with her daughter Louisa on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, in the household of Caleb Clark Cobb, Louisa's future husband.15
Sarah was named an heir in the will of her son Philip dated 22 Jul 1856 in St. Francois Co., MissouriG, to receive his interest in her late husband's estate.16
Sarah moved to IllinoisG where her daughters Eliza and Melvilla and their families were living by 1860.17 She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Elizabeth Twp., Jo Daviess Co., IllinoisG, in the household of her daughter Eliza and her husband, John B. Ball.18
Sarah was apparently the female age 80 to 90 listed on the 1865 State Census of Elizabeth, Jo Daviess Co., IllinoisG, in the household of John B. Ball, husband of her daugher Eliza.19
     Sarah died after 1865.

Matilda Long, who married Archibald S. Lackman 1 Jun 1821 in Caldwell Co., appears to have also been their daughter. She appears to be one of the females in the 1810 census, Griffin Long household, and 1820 census, Louisa Doom household, which would place her birth at about 1803. She and Archibald had a son Griffin, and a son David who was listed in 1850 census with Sarah and daughter Louisa.20,21,22,23

Narrative:

Griffin appeared on the 1800 tax list of in Nelson Co., KentuckyG, reporting that he owned one horse. He does not appear in earlier or later tax lists, so apparently he lived there only briefly as an adult.7
Griffin married Sarah Graham on 27 Aug 1801 in Nelson Co., KentuckyG.1,4,5
Griffin and Sarah moved to Livingston Co.G shortly after their marriage.

Establishing His Homestead --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

On 6 Dec 1802 Griffin was issued a certificate by the county commissioners for 400 acres on Spring Creek Livingston Co. The certificate was issued under the 1795 Act of the General Assembly of Kentucky, and indicated that he had established that he was over age 18 and had lived on the land for at least a year. It entitled the holder to pay the required fees, have a survey made to establish the actual boundaries, and finally a patent issued by the state to confer title.8,9
Griffin appeared on the 1803 tax list of in Livingston Co.G, reporting 600 acres of land, apparently in error, and four horses. He did not appear for some reason on the 1804 list, and the 1805 list for that part of the county is lost. He appeared on the 1806, 1807, and 1808 lists reporting 400 acres and 3, 7, and 7 horses respectively. On the 1809 list he reported the 400-acre parcel and 5 horses, and also a 200-acre parcel on Crab Creek.10
The part of Livingston Co. where Griffin lived became part of Caldwell Co., effective 1 May 1809. He appears on the Caldwell Co. tax lists for 1809 through 1817, reporting each year the 400-acre property on Spring Creek and from three to eight horses. In 1814, 1815, and 1816 he also reported land in Livingston Co. on behalf of the M. White estate.11
Griffin appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, His household was recorded as consisting of one male under age 10 (son Philip), one age 16 to 26 (himself), three females under 10 (daughters Matilda, Maria and Eliza), one age 26 to 45 (wife, Sarah Graham), and three slaves.12
Jacob Miller was issued a certificate by the county commissioners for 400 acres on Spring Creek, adjacent to Griffin's tract, on 7 May 1804. On 2 Dec 1810 he assigned that certificate to Griffin, presumably in exchange for a payment, but available records do not show what the consideration was.13

A Very Long Probate --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Griffin made payment of $80 for his original 400-acre grant in two installments. A survey was completed for the parcel 16 Nov 1815, and the patent was issued by the state 3 Feb 1817.14,15
Griffin left a will dated 9 Mar 1817 in which he left possession of his plantation to his wife so long as she remained single and raised and educated the children there; specified that his son Philip was to be raised, educated, and trained in the trade of tannery by his friend Benny Doom who was to receive $75 in exchange; stated that the children were to each receive an equal share of his estate as they come of age; and, in apparent contradiction to the first term, said his wife was to keep possession if she pleased as long as she, or she and her husband if she married, made good use of the property, otherwise the executor was to do as he thought best. He named Col. Samuel Glenn as his executor.2
Griffin died, in Mar or Apr 1817, probably in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.6
His will was proved at the Apr 1817 term of the Caldwell Co. county court.2 Col. Samuel Glenn, as his executor, reported Griffin's property on the Caldwell Co. tax lists from 1817 until 1838. He reported three horses the first two years, but after that only the 400 acres of land.16
A survey for a 131-acre grant on Spring Creek in Caldwell Co. was made in Griffin's name on 15 Dec 1818, based on the certificate he had obtained from Jacob Miller in 1810. The property was bounded by Griffin's 400-acre tract and properties of other owners, and it appears that 131 acres of the authorized 400 acres was available as unclaimed land. There is no record of who arraigned for the survey to be made.17
The settlement of the estate was filed on 10 Feb 1830. No reason for the long delay was given. The executor reported that he had collected $210 from the sale of property and notes payable to the deseased, and $42.50 in rent from his land. He had paid debts and taxes totaling $230.50, leaving a balance of $22. The settlement was examined and approved by the county court at its Feb 1830 term.18

Caleb Cobb Tries to Consolidate the Property --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

In 1836 Caleb Clark Cobb, who would later marry Griffin's daughter Louisa, set about acquiring the rights to the property left by Griffin to his widow and children, apparently expending some effort to do so. On 15 Jul 1836 he purchased from Griffin's daughter Maria and her husband their right as "one of the legatees of Griffin Long desc'd." to 400 ac. on Spring Creek and the waters of Livingston Creek for $50. On 26 Oct 1836 he purchased from Griffin's widow Sarah her right of dower on the same property, for $100, noting that she then lived there. On 26 Oct 1836 he purchased the rights of Griffin's daughter Louisa for $70.19 Then, on 8 Dec 1843, after he had already sold half the parcel back to Louisa, Caleb purchased the rights of Griffin's brother Thomas, of Sangamon Co, Illinois, in a tract on the head of Spring Creek "belonging to heirs of Griffing Long desc'd," for $80. Thomas had obtained those rights from Griffin's daughter Eliza and her husband and from Griffin's daughter Melvilla and her husband.20
A patent was issued in Griffin's name 28 Dec 1846 for the 131 acres surveyed in 1818. Who paid the fees, who arraigned for the patent, and the reason for the long delay are unknown. No record has been found of how the property was disposed of by his heirs.21

FatherCaleb Clark Cobb (25 Dec 1797 - 19 Nov 1867)
MotherLouisa Berry Long (1812 - 1881)
Chart MembershipDescendants of Gideon Cobb

Key Events:

Birth: abt 1854, Illinois,1

Narrative:

Belle Cobb was born about 1854 in IllinoisG.1
She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Dycusburg, Crittenden Co., KentuckyG, in the household of her parents, Caleb Clark Cobb and Louisa Berry Long.1,2
Belle does not appear in the 1870 census of her supposed mother, Louisa Berry Long, when she would have been about 16 years old. She may have died by then, she may have married although she would have been pretty young for that, or she may have been living elsewhere. In any case, not other record of her has been found.3
Research Note, 19 May 2021:
The only evidence that Belle was the daughter of Caleb and Louisa is that she is listed in their household in the 1860 census, which does not show relationships, with the surname Cobb. She is shown as born in Illinois while her parents were not know to have lived there, but Louisa did have two sisters living there at the time, so it is possible she went there to give birth.1

He was probably one of the two males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Caleb Clark Cobb, in the 1830 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.14
His mother died on 11 Oct 1835, when Thomas was 9 years old.15,16,17 According to family lore, after the death of his mother in the fall of 1835, Thomas went to live with the family of his mother's brother, Willis Benson Machen. But he apparently returned to his father's home by 1840.18
He was probably one of the two males age 10 to15 listed in the household of his father in the 1840 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.19
Thomas married Almeda Glenn, daughter of Col. Samuel Glenn and Nancy Langston, on 24 May 1848 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.4,7,8

Enlarging His Land Holdings --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Thomas purchased 200 acres on the waters of Claylick Creek in Crittenden Co.G from H. P. Williams on 26 Jan 1864. Williams had purchased the property from Thomas's uncle, Gideon Dyer Cobb Jr., on 1 Jan 1859 for $775, paid by two notes for $387.50 each, due one and two years later. Apparently he failed to pay the notes, and then endorsed the deed to Thomas who paid them off. But the title seemed to have been in question after Gideon's bankruptcy, so the assignee issued a new deed to Thomas 5 Apr 1872.25 On 21 Oct 1874 Thomas sold two parcels of that tract, one to Harriett E. Morris for $50, and the other to Thomas Greenlee for $300. On 11 Feb 1875 he sold a third parcel to S. T. Greenlee, also for $300.26 The size of these parcels is not stated in the deeds, leaving it unclear how much of the original parcel he may have retained. Curiously, after his death his widow sold the entire 200 acres, excepting only 60 acres conveyed to Mrs. Morris.27
Thomas was issued letters of administration on 14 Dec 1867 in Crittenden Co.G for the estate of his father, who had died intestate (without leaving a will). He posted a bond with his uncle Gideon Dyer Cobb Jr. as surety.28
Thomas and Almeda appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Eddyville, Lyon Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 27 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $2000 and personal estate valued at $800. Their children Henry, Samuel, Mary, Giles, Jefferson, Thomas, and William were listed as living with them.23

Selling Off Some of His Land --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

On 14 Oct 1869 Thomas sold 65 acres on Skinframe Creek in Lyon Co.G for $650 to M. L. Scott, receiving $200 in cash and two notes for the balance.29 On 18 Jul 1870 he sold 9 acres on the waters of Skinframe Creek in Lyon Co.G for $700 to James M. Harver, receiving $400 in cash and a note due 1 Jan 1871 for the balance.30 On 25 Sep 1871 Thomas sold a parcel on Livingston Creek in Lyon Co.G for $600 to Wilson Ballentine, receiving $340 in cash and a note due 1 Jan 1871 for the balance.31 He sold 95 acres on Skinframe Creek in Lyon Co.G to his eldest son, Henry, on 25 Sep 1871, for $800. He paid with two notes of $400 each, one due 1 Jan 1872 and the other a year later.32 No record has been found of how he obtained these parcels, but the timing suggests they may have come from his father's estate. His will mentions his "home place," the purchase of which has also not been found. Perhaps it too came from his father's estate, though it is quite possible the deed was never recorded, or simply has not been found in the records.
Thomas purchased a parcel of unspecified size adjacent to his own property on 8 Jan 1872, for $100 from Catherine Eades.33 He purchased 60 acres on the waters of Skinframe Creek in Lyon Co.G on 13 Nov 1877, for $461 from Royal Bingham.34

Putting His Affairs in Order --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Thomas left a will dated 14 Aug 1879, naming his wife, Almeda Glenn, to serve as executor, and also to receive all property of every kind. She was authorized to sell any landed property except the "home survey." As executrix, she was to be advised by their sons Henry and Giles, who were also to serve as alternates if she died.3
Thomas and Almeda appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Eddyville, Lyon Co., Kentucky G, enumerated 14 Jun 1880, with their oldest son, Samuel, and his wife apparently living close by as they were listed next in the record. Their children Giles, Jefferson, Thomas, and William were listed as living with them.35
Thomas died on 22 Feb 1881 at age 54.9,10,11 He was buried in Glenn's Chapel Cemetery, Lyon Co., KentuckyG.12,13
His will was proved on 28 Feb 1881 in County Court, Eddyville, Lyon Co., KentuckyG. It was much later, on 6 Apr 1918, recorded in Chrittenden Co. as well, for reasons unsaid.3

Henry purchased a lot in KuttawaG on 8 Jan 1883, for $250 from Charles Anderson.21 He sold 95 acres on Skinframe Creek in Lyon Co.G to his brother-in-law, David P. Glenn, on 16 Jul 1883 for $1,400, with $400 paid in cash and the balance by two notes. Half was due 1 Jan 1884 and the balance a year later.22 Henry purchased two more lots in KuttawaG on 17 Dec 1883, for $550 from H. C. Marshall, paying $100 in cash with the balance due in 60 days.23
Henry was a partner in the firm of Dorroh & Cobb for a time. In Sep 1892 he established his own store, selling books, stationery, school supplies, furniture, and undertaking goods. He took a course in the science of embalming, and "being the only scientific and practical undertaker in Lyon County, his skill is greatly appreciate by the people" according to a contemporary account. He was also a member of the grocery firm of Glenn & Cobb, a partner in the Eddyville Hardware Company, a director in the Citizens Bank of Kuttawa, and general manager of the Kuttawa Water-works.24,25
His investment in the Kuttawa Light and Water company proved to be disappointing. In May 1905 W. B. Smith purchased from Henry and two other parties their 150 share in the business for ten cents on the dollar, after the Citizens' Bank of Kuttawa foreclosed on a $10,000 mortgage.26
Henry sold his undivided interest in their father's home place to his brother Giles on 11 Nov 1884, receiving $100 in cash, a note for $150 due 1 Apr 1885, and a second for $350 due 1 Jan 1887. They were recorded as paid 28 May 1920.27 He purchased the remaining 2/3 interest in 100 acres on the waters of Crab Creek on 17 Feb 1885, from the heirs of John C. Graham for $500. His father had bought the other 1/3 years before, which Henry in turn had purchased, but the deed had not been recorded and had been lost, so the original seller also joined in the deed.28

In the fall of 1895 Henry complained to Marshal William McCullom that a boy had on several occasions thrown rocks at him. When the marshal went to arrest the boy his mother, Mrs. Berryman, objected and attempted to shoot him with a pistol. He succeeded in arresting her and took her to jail, where she died of heart trouble. Her daughter, Mrs. Lem Johns, repeatedly threatened to avenge her mother's death, once firing on Henry and the marshal as they were walking. On 25 Jun 1896 she had the marshal summoned to the cemetery, where she tried to shoot him. She failed, but he shot her dead.30
Henry and Addie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Kuttawa, Lyon Co., Kentucky G, on Oak Ave., enumerated 2 Jun 1900. reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Also listed in the household were Coppie Roberts, his widowed niece, age 20, and his cousin Samuel Glenn, age 22, a grocery merchant.31

There is room to question whether Ruth was actually the daughter of David and Mary. She is listed as such in the 1900 census, her husband shows Mary as his mother-in-law in the 1920 census, and her death certificate, with her husband as informant, shows Mary Glenn as her mother with father unknown. But she was born some 20 years after David and Mary's two sons, and is shown as daughter of their son Hugh in the 1910 census. It seems quite possible Ruth was actually his daughter, born before his marriage.23,24,25,26
