Marriage: 25 May 1842, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, Marcus Marcellus Tyler (b. 21 Oct 1814, d. 27 Oct 1858)7,8,9

Narrative:

Sarah Jane Mims was born about 1819 in KentuckyG.4,5,6 She was probably one of the three females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Linah Mims, in the 1820 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KentuckyG.10
She was named an heir in the will of her grandmother Jane Clendenin dated 10 Jul 1824, to receive a the first male child of a young slave to be given to her brother Davis.11
Her mother died between 1828 and Jun 1830, when Sarah was about 10 years old.12,13,14,15 She was probably one of the two females age 10 to 15 listed in the household of her father in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., KentuckyG.16
Sarah apparently moved to Caldwell Co.G, were her older brother, John, was living. He had moved there before 1830, and had prospered there. It seems likely that she and all her surviving siblings moved to brother John's household not long after 1830, perhaps after he married in the fall of 1831.16,17
Sarah married Marcus Marcellus Tyler on 25 May 1842 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.7,8,9
Sarah and Marcus appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Trigg Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 2 Aug 1850, with six of her nieces and nephews listed as living with them. They were Irene Cobb, daughter of her sister Julia; Linah and Robert Cobb, sons of her sister Cornelia; and Byron, Linah, and John Mims, sons of her brother Davis.18
Her husband died on 27 Oct 1858.19
Sarah Jane appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Eddyville, Lyon Co., KentuckyG, in the household of her sister Cornelia and her husband Robert Livingston Cobb.20,21
Robert and Cornelia moved to PaducahG about 1870, and apparently Sarah moved with them.22,23 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Paducah, McCracken Co., KentuckyG, in the household of Cornelia and Robert.24
No further record of her has been found. She has not been found in the 1880 census, so she may have died before then. She may have been buried in the Eddyville cemetery by her husband as there are unknown graves there with no stones.25

Key Events:

Birth: 6 Apr 1838, Kentucky,4,5,6
Death: 1 Nov 1861,7
Burial: Fairview Cemetery, Bowling Green, Warren Co., Kentucky,8

Narrative:

Byron O. Mims was born on 6 Apr 1838 in KentuckyG.4,5,6
His mother died before 1850, when Byron was about 12 years old.9,10,11 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Trigg Co., KentuckyG, in the household of Marcus Marcellus Tyler and Sarah Jane Mims, his father's sister and her husband.1
He moved to St. James, ArkansasG, with his father before 1860.12 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Independence Co., ArkansasG, in the household of his father.13
Byron was reported his occupation in 1860 as a farmer, presumably working on his father's farm.2
Byron and his brothers Linah and John enlisted in the Company C, 7th Arkansas Infantry 26 Jul 1861, at Camp Shaver, near Pocahontas, Arkansas, for twelve month's service.14,15,16 He was a sergeant. He appears in the muster roll for that company for 31 Aug to 31 Oct 1861 as sick and in the hospital.14,17
Byron died on 1 Nov 1861 at age 23.7 He was buried in Fairview Cemetery, Bowling Green, Warren Co., KentuckyG, in the Confederate Soldiers Memorial section.8
Research Note, 16 Nov 2014:

I have placed Byron, John, Linah, Robert, and Davis as sons of Davis Mims and Elizabeth Van Swearingen despite some conflicting evidence. They appear in the 1860 census with Davis. Apparently after Elizabeth had died the three older boys were with Sarah Jane (Mims) Tyler, Davis's sister, and her husband in 1850. The two younger were with Lawson Cash and Mariah Beck, relationship not yet identified. Robert's death certificate, for which Linah was the informant, shows Davis as his father and his mother as Lizzie Chisterfer. There is no evidence of anyone by that surname in Caldwell Co. at the time, so I conclude that is simply in error. Linah's death certificate, for which his son Robert was informant, claims Linah's father was John Mims, and his mother's surname was Cobb. Jan Davis, a descendant of John, reports a family tradition that the boys were the sons of John H. Mims and Caroline Hanson Cresap. That is clearly not correct, as their eight children are documented by two reliable sources, which do not include any of these four boys.18,19,20,21,22,23

Linah and Susan moved their familiy to Moore Co.G, in the northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle, in May 1892. They moved there for her health, as she had been very sickly in Cass Co. and the pure dry air there was supposed to help, and apparently did at least to a degree.32,33
His wife died on 9 May 1899 in Dumas, TexasG.34,35,36 Linah moved to Nolan Co.G with his teenage son Ralph shortly afterwards.37 Linah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Sweetwater, Nolan Co., Texas G, enumerated 7 Jun 1900, reporting that he rented his home. His son Ralph was listed as living with him.38
Linah reported his occupation as a farmer in 1860, presumably working on his father's farm. He became a dry goods merchant by 1880. His dry goods store evidently included a post office, as he is shown as postmaster of the Douglassville post office, in Cass Co., Texas in 1881. He is reported as receiving compensation of $79.58 for that position, presumably annually.39,40,41 He became a boat maker by 1900.42

Death: Feb 1880, Logan Co., Arkansas,10,6,11
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken Co., Kentucky,12,13

Narrative:

Rufus K. Mims was born in 1821 in Christian Co., KentuckyG.4,5,6
He was named an heir in the will of his grandmother Jane Clendenin dated 10 Jul 1824, to receive a child of a young slave given to his brother Davis.14
His mother died between 1828 and Jun 1830, when Rufus was about 8 years old.15,16,17,18 He was probably the male age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father, Linah Mims, in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., KentuckyG.19
Rufus apparently moved to Caldwell Co.G, were his older brother, John, was living. He had moved there before 1830, and had prospered there. It seems likely that he and all his surviving siblings moved to brother John's household not long after 1830, perhaps after he married in the fall of 1831.19,20
He appears on the tax rolls in Caldwell Co. in 1844 through 1848, reporting owning a horse valued at $50 in most of those years, but no other taxable property (later rolls have not been examined.)21
Rufus married Geraldine L. Jacob, daughter of Arnold Jacob and Cynthia Sprigg, on 20 Dec 1847 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.7,8,9

Taking on Guardianship of Nephews and Nieces --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

The Caldwell Co. Court appointed Rufus guardian for the four minor children of Augustus F. Jacob, his new wife's older brother. He posted a $3,000 bond.22 It seems Rufus took on a challenging task. According to the preamble of a bill enacted the preceding 25 Feb 1848 by the Kentucky General Assembly, his brother-in-law "died somewhat embarrassed, leaving a tract of land in Caldwell county...containing, by deed, 190 acres...and some slaves, among them a negro man named Peter, of bad temper, subject to intoxication and running away, so that he was not more than half his time in the employment of his owner." The act authorized the children's guardian to petition to sell the land and Peter and directed the court to approve that request.23
Rufus and Geraldine appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of District No. 1, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 14 Sep 1850, reporting real estate of $3100, and four slaves, a 40-year-old female and an 11-year-old male, and females aged 9 and 5. Their daughter Luella was listed as living with them, as was Mary Harris, age 19.2,24
Apparently Rufus was not diligent about filing the required accounting of his wards' assets. He was one of a long list of guardians presented at the 19 Apr 1852 meeting of the Caldwell Co. County Court who had not filed inventories of their wards' estates. They were ordered to do so before the next term. He apparently did, as his case was dismissed at the next meeting.25
Rufus was again called to task on matter when the County Court issued him a summons on 21 Feb 1853 for failure to file a settlement of the estate, ordering him to do so by the next meeting. But the process was returned unexecuted at the next three meeting of the Court. Finally, at the 18 Jul 1853 meeting the matter was apparently resolved as the case was dismissed with costs to be paid by the plaintiff, his brother-in-law Everard P. Jacob.26
Rufus and Geraldine appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Paducah, McCracken Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 23 Jul 1860, with her reporting real estate valued at $3000, personal estate valued at $2500, and two slaves, a male age 21 and a female age 20, in one slave house. Their children Luella and Lilian were listed as living with them.27,28
Rufus was listed as a merchant in 1850 and as a merchant's clerk in 1860.29,30
His wife died on 18 Jun 1862.31,32

Moving on After Death of His Wife --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Rufus has not been found in the 1870 census. His daughters were in Paducah in the household of Arthur J. Patterson and his mother Elvira E. Jacob, who was his late wife's elder sister. Rufus may have already gone to Arkansas where his brother Davis was living. He too has not been found in the 1870 census.33
Rufus died in Feb 1880 probably in Logan Co., ArkansasG, at age ~59, of pneumonia.10,6,11 He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken Co., KentuckyG, with his wife.12,13
Rufus appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roseville Twp., Logan Co., Arkansas G, enumerated 8 Jun 1880, in the household of Jake and Millie Holzman and their family. His entry was then crossed out, having apparently been entered in error since he had died the previous February.34

Geraldine died on 18 Jun 1862 at age ~35.10,11 She was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Paducah, McCracken Co., KentuckyG.12,13
Research Note, 6 Aug 2017:

Of the children of Arnold Jacob and Cynthia Sprigg shown here direct evidence that they are the parents has been found only for Augustus; the court proceedings assigning the administrator of his estate names his father. The conclusion that Elvira, Everard, Adela, and Geraldine were also their children has been reached from indirect evidence. No other Jacob has been found in the Caldwell Co. censuses early enough to have been their father. The number and ages of the children in Arnold's households in the 1810 through 1830 censuses matches perfectly with the ages of each of them. Further, Everand acted as administrator of Augustus's estate, Geraldine's husband was guardian for his children, Geraldine's daughters lived with Elvira after her death, and Cynthia moved in the Elvira after the death of her husband.20,21,22,14,23

Key Events:

Birth: abt 1810, Richmond, Virginia,4,5,6,7
Marriage: 1 May 1837, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, Elizabeth Van Swearingen Cresap (b. 1817, d. bef 1850)8,9,10

Narrative:

Davis Russer Mims was born about 1810 in Richmond, VirginiaG.4,5,6,7
He moved to Christian Co., Kentucky, with his parents, Linah Mims and Rebeccah Davis, about 1817 or 1818.11,12 He was probably the male under age 10 listed in the household of his father in the 1820 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KentuckyG.13
He was named an heir in the will of his grandmother, Jane Clendenin, dated 10 Jul 1824, to receive "a likey negro girl of eight or ten years of age" who was to be purchased, except that his mother was to receive "the use and benefit of said negro during her natural life" and her first four children are to go to his siblings; he is to receive any children after that.14
He was probably the male age 15 to 20 listed in the household of his father, in the 1830 Federal Census of Christian Co., KentuckyG.15
Davis moved to Caldwell Co.G, were his older brother, John, was living. He had moved there before 1830, and had prospered there. It seems likely that all their surviving siblings moved to brother John's household not long after 1830, perhaps after he married in the fall of 1831. Davis did moved there about that time, whether or not he actually lived with John and his wife.15,16
Davis was appointed a constable in Caldwell Co. on 18 May 1835, replacing Reuben R. Bush who had resigned. He entered a bond of $2,000, with James Clark and Reuben R. OHara as securities, and took the oath of office. He apparently later resigned that office, but no record of that has been found.17
Davis married Elizabeth Van Swearingen Cresap, daughter of Edward Otho Cresap and Sarah Story Briscoe, on 1 May 1837 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.8,9,10
He and Elizabeth have not been found in the 1840 census. They were not living with any of his siblings. One record shows their third son as born in Ballard Co. Since Davis does not appear in the Caldwell tax lists until 1845 it may be they were living elsewhere.
Davis appeared on the tax list of Caldwell Co., in 1845 through 1848, reporting two children ages 5 to 16 but no taxable property in 1845; a horse valued at $20 in 1846; two parcels of land totaling 128 acres and 5 horses with a total value of $2,300 in 1847; and one parcel of 23 acres and four horses with a total values of $1,620 in 1848. Later tax lists have been lost.18
On 21 Apr 1845 Davis was appointed overseer of that portion of the road from Eddyville to Hamman's ferry from Lick Creek to the one mile tree below Davey Doom's. As was the custom, he, together with a long list of those living along the road, were to keep it "in good repair, clean and smooth 30 feet wide according to law."19
Davis was appointed constable of Caldwell Co. on 19 Mar 1849, replacing David B. Cassidy who had resigned. He entered a bond of $2,000, with Gideon Dyer Cobb Jr., C. H. Boyd, and M. Dudley as securities, and took the oath of office.20 He resigned to that office 20 Aug 1849 by a written order, without appearing in person.21
His wife apparently died before 1850.22,23,24 Davis has not been found in the 1850 census. With his wife apparently dead, their young children were living with other families. Whether he remained in the area or departed and returned is unknown.
Davis was again appointed a constable of Caldwell Co. on 18 Nov 1850, for the town of Eddyville. He entered a bond of $2,000, with Milyon Dudley and A. H. Champion as securities, and took the oath of office. No record of when he left that office has been found, however when new county officers were appointed in Jun 1851 after re-districting he was not among them.25
Davis moved to Arkansas before 1860 and was joined there by his five sons. They settled in a community then known as Buckhorn, now called St. JamesG.26 Davis appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Franklin Twp., Independence Co., ArkansasG, enumerated 10 Aug 1860, reporting personal estate valued at $2,000. His sons Byron, John, Linah, Robert, and Davis were listed as living with him.27
Davis was a physician in ArkansasG.28
Davis moved to De Klab, Bowie Co., TexasG, by 1865 when he appeared on a U.S. tax list there. He was also listed on the next year's list.29
No further record of Davis has been found.

Narrative:

Elizabeth Van Swearingen Cresap was born in 1817 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.4,5,6
Her father died on 2 Jan 1817, months after her birth.13,14,15
She was probably one of the two females under age 10 listed in the household of her mother's second husband, John Cobb, in the 1820 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.16 John was appointed guardian of her and her siblings 28 Aug 1820.17 She was probably the female age 10 to 15 listed in the household of John Cobb, her stepfather, in the 1830 Federal Census of Eddyville, Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.18
Elizabeth married Davis Russer Mims, son of Linah Mims and Rebeccah Davis, on 1 May 1837 in Caldwell Co., KentuckyG.7,8,9
She and Davis have not been found in the 1840 census. They were not living with any of his siblings. One record shows their third son as born in Ballard Co. Since Davis does not appear in the Caldwell tax lists until 1845 it may be they were living elsewhere.
Elizabeth apparently died before 1850, as her children all appeared in the households of other families in 1850, and her husband resigned his new position as constable.10,11,12
