Capt. Elijah George Galusha1,2,3

ID# 2181, (1757 - 1783)

Parents:

FatherJacob Galusha (9 Mar 1721 - 13 Feb 1792)
MotherLydia Huntington ( - 6 May 1764)

Key Events:

Birth: 23 Oct 1757, Norwich, Connecticut,4,5
Marriage: Beulah Chittenden (b. 15 May 1764, d. 6 Feb 1824)6
Burial: St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery, Arlington, Bennington Co., Vermont,7
Death: 26 May 1783, Arlington, Vermont,8,9

Narrative:

Capt. Elijah George Galusha was born on 23 Oct 1757 in Norwich, ConnecticutG.4,5
Elijah was one of the Green Mountain Boys. He is reported in various sources to have been killed in the Battle of Hubbardton, which occurred in 1777. However those reports seem to have been "greatly exaggerated," to misquote Samuel Clemens, as his children were born three and five years later, and his tombstone and newspaper accounts of his death place it in 1783.10,11
Elijah married Beulah Chittenden, daughter of Gov. Thomas Chittenden and Elizabeth Meigs.6
The newly formed state of Vermont continued the practice of the colonial governors of New Hampshire of granting parcels of land to groups of "proprietors" to form towns. Elijah became a proprietor of seven towns, though it seems clear that in many cases his interest was speculation rather than establishing residence there. His first grant was for the town of Fair Haven, on 27 Oct 1779, by Gov. Thomas Chittenden. He was named as one of 76 "associates of Capt. Ebenezer Allen who paid £6,930 for the grant. Proprietors were required to cultivate 10 acres of land and build a house at least 18 feet square, or have one family settled on each share, within four years after the "circumstances of the present war...will admit of a settlement with safety." As with the royal grants, pine timber suitable for mast and spars for the Navy were reserved to the state.12
He had a water-powered saw mill in ArlingtonG. On 26 May 1783 he was operating it alone, and about sundown, after finishing one log he prepared to throw off the stack of boards. But some obstruction evidently prevented him from closing the water gate and stopping the saw. Something caught in the running saw and was thrown into him, cutting him badly in the throat. Treatment by neighbors was unsuccessful and he died an hour and a half later.13
Elijah died on 26 May 1783 in Arlington, VermontG, at age 25, in a sawmill accident.8,9 He was buried in St. James Episcopal Church Cemetery, Arlington, Bennington Co., VermontG.7
Elijah's wife Beulah and brother Jacob were named adminstrators of his estate. After advertising in the newspaper they met debtors and creditors in her home in ArlingtonG on 2 Mar 1784 to settle his affairs.14

Chart MembershipDescendants of Linah and Rebeccah (Davis) Mims

Key Events:

Birth: abt 1786,4,5
Marriage: abt 23 Feb 1803, Greenbrier Co., Virginia, Linah Mims (b. 14 Nov 1772, d. btn 1847 and 1850)6,7
Death: btn 1828 and Jun 1830,8,9,10,11

Narrative:

Rebeccah Davis was born about 1786.4,5
She was named an heir in the will of her father, John Davis, dated 17 Mar 1800 in Greenbrier Co., VirginiaG, in which she was to receive half of the remaining part of the tract where he lived, after the 150 ac. was given to his wife. Her sister Nancy and her husband were to be allowed to continue to live rent-free on that land for eight years. Rebeccah was to receive her choice of any issue born to slave Alce, who was left to her sister Elizabeth, and one-third of all issue born to slave Milly who was left to her mother. She was also to receive one-fourth of the proceeds, after150£ went to her sister Elizabeth, from the sale of three slaves who were to work on the home place until the youngest daughter become of age.12
Her father died in 1800, when Rebeccah was about 14 years old.13,14,15
Rebeccah married Linah Mims, son of John Mims and Sarah Horn, about 23 Feb 1803 in Greenbrier Co., VirginiaG.6,7
Rebeccah and Linah sold 122¾ acres for $1 in Greenbrier Co., VirginiaG, to her mother, Jane Clendenin, on 25 Mar 1811. The property adjoined that of Archibald Rodgers, Lewis's old place, widow Henderick, Williams Handley, Jane Davis, and Andrew Matter, and was part of a survey granted to John Davis, dec'd., for 363 ac. It would appear to be the property Rebeccah had inherited from father in Apr 1800.16
Rebeccah and Linah moved to RichmondG, by 1812 when they occupied a two-story brick house on F St. (now Franklin), between Madison and Jefferson Sts., about a mile from the Capital.17
Rebeccah and Linah moved to Christian Co., Kentucky, settling about one mile west of Means' Spring, near Newstead, in the western part of the county.G According to one source that move was "about 1816 or 1817." Since Linah was regularly in Richmond into the summer of 1817, it would have been at least the latter part of this period.18,19
Why they moved to Kentucky is not totally clear, but they must have received positive reports from there from Rebeccah's sisters and their husbands, Thomas Arbuckle, David W. Breeding, and William Long, who were in Christian Co. by 1810. But each of them was evidently farming, each holding 200 acres or more, and several slaves and horses over the years.20
In contrast, Linah reported no real estate for the first decade they lived in Christian Co. He did report one or two adult slaves in various years, although most years only one aged 16 and under, and two years none, suggesting they were household help. He reported as many as five horses, and in 1819 a carriage. It seems they were living in rented quarters.21,22
She was probably the female age 26 to 45 listed in the household of her husband, Linah Mims, in the 1820 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KentuckyG.22
Rebeccah was named an heir in the will of her mother Jane Clendenin dated 10 Jul 1824, to receive "the use and benefit ... during her natural life" of a slave to be purchased for her son Davis.23
Rebeccah died between 1828 and Jun 1830.8,9,10,11

ShawneetownG had experienced flooding from the Ohio River from it's earliest days. In response levees had been built to protect the town, and repeatedly strengthened as higher and higher floods occured. The levee was thought to be sound when it suddenly falled at about 5:00 pm on 3 Apr 1898, so no preparations had been made. Refugees rushed to the hills, the public school, the court house, and the Riverside Hotel, and some stayed in the second stories of their homes. Twenty-five people drowned.18,19 Sarah, recently widowed with four sons ages 6 to 17, was among the victims. According to family lore, she had time to grab only the tablecloth and whatever was on it, food and all, and rush to the court house where the family stayed with others on the second floor. She and the children were taken to Mt. Vernon, IndianaG, by rescue boat.20,21
