Linah enlisted in the Company C, 7th Arkansas Infantry 26 Jul 1861, at Camp Shaver, near Pocahontas, Arkansas, for twelve month's service.
20,21,22 He enlisted as a 3rd lieutenant, was promoted 1 Oct 1861 to 2nd lieutenant, and on 3 Mar 1862 to 1st lieutenant. He served until the Battle of Shiloh and was discharged 16 May 1862.
22,23 John and his brother Linah enlisted again 7 Jul 1862, at Roseville, Arkansas
G, in Company K, 1st Regiment Arkansas Cavalry. John enlisted as a 1st sergeant.
24,25,26 Both he and his brother were absent without leave from Sep 1863 until 28 Jan 1864. John's rank was reduced to private on his return.

29 John and Margaret and their young son moved down the river shortly after the death of their daughter, Marcella. According to local lore, the child had so enchanged the neighbors that when the town of Hesstown was renamed after the Civil War it was named for her
