Narrative:

Elizabeth M. Toot was born on 26 Nov 1800 in VirginiaG.4,5,6
Elizabeth married Dr. Davis Green Tuck on 11 Mar 1818 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.7,8
She was probably the female age 16 to 26 listed in the household of her husband, in the 1820 Federal Census of Marseilles, Halifax Co., VirginiaG.11
On 14 Oct 1822 Davis and Elizabeth were given 280 acres of land in Halifax Co.G by her parents, Adam Toot and Sarah King.12,13 Curiously, the deed was not recorded until 8 Aug 1826, and the property, on Miller Rd., remained in Adam's name in the tax lists until the following year. Perhaps his continuing to pay the taxes, $1.62 per year, was part of the gift?14
Davis and Elizabeth seem to have adopted William, who was born three years before their marriage, between 1820 when he was not included in their household and 1830 when he apparently was. It was likely an informal adoption, as he used the surname Edmondson through college, but after that used Tuck. As adults he and their other children referred to each other as siblings.15,16,17,18,19
Elizabeth was probably the female age 20 to 30 listed in the household of her husband in the 1830 Federal Census of Halifax Co., VirginiaG.20
Elizabeth and Davis sold the 280-acre parcel given them by her father to Daniel L. Dunscomb for $1,680 on 9 Nov 1830.21 On 13 Mar 1832 Elizabeth and Davis sold a 33½-acre parcel on a branch of the Banister River in Halifax Co.G to Sarah Tuck for $54.37. He had previously purchased this parcel from her, apparently in 1831 since it first appears in his name on the tax lists the following year.22,23 Elizabeth and Davis moved to Christian Co., KentuckyG, in 1832 or early 1833.24,25

Elizabeth was mentioned in the will of Adam Toot, her father, dated 12 Nov 1835, stating that she was to receive no further part of his estate because he had already given "a fair proportion" to her husband.26
She was probably the female age 30 to 40 listed in the household of her husband in the 1840 Federal Census of Christian Co., KentuckyG.27
Elizabeth and Davis appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Christian Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 7 Aug 1850, reporting $19,500 in real estate and 41 slaves, of which 13 were females. Their children Walter, Henry, Elizabeth, Richard, Paul, Martha, and Virginia were listed as living with them, as was Rebecca, age 74, who may have been his mother or another relative.28,29
Elizabeth and Davis appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 9 Aug 1860, reporting $39,000 in real estate and $55,200 in personal property. He also reported owing 30 slaves, ranging in age from 11 months to 60 years, housed in 7 slave houses. Their children Richard, Paul, Martha, and Virginia were listed as living with them.30,31
Elizabeth was named an heir in the will of her husband, dated 25 Mar 1861, to receive all the balance of his estate after the specific amounts set aside for their six youngest children.32
Her husband died on 3 Feb 1863 in Christian Co., KentuckyG.33,34,35
Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Hopkinsville, Christian Co., KentuckyG, enumerated 30 Aug 1870, reporting real estate of $24,000 and personal estate of $6,500. The household included a number of Blacks, including a domestic servant and several farm hands. Her children Elizabeth and Virginia were listed as living with her, as were Elizabeth's husband, Thomas Herbert Elliott, and their children, Quintus, William, Walter, Pauline, and Josephine.36
Elizabeth died on 29 Dec 1873 in Christian Co., KentuckyG, at age 73.6,9 She was buried in the Tuck-Elliott Family Cemetery, Lafayette, Christian Co., KentuckyG.10
Research Note, 25 Feb 2009:

Alethea Jane Macon in her Tuck genealogy reports that the descendants of Davis have believed that the name of his wife was Elizabeth Mishen. Record of his marriage to Elizabeth M. Toot has been found, but no marriage record has been found for another marriage. Davis' will refers to his wife as E. M. Tuck, and her tombstone reads the same. His daughter Rebecca supposedly named a son Mishen, so it seems quite possible Mishen was Elizabeth's middle name. Scant records have been found for anyone surnamed Mishen during that time in either Virginia or Pennsylvania, which is supposedly where the Toots arrived from, so the origin of that name are unclear.37,38,3

Children:
Children with Dr. Davis Green Tuck

Their eldest son, William, was apparently adopted. He was born three years before their marriage, and used the surname Edmondson until after he graduated from medical school. His birth parents were probably one of the Edmondson families living in the area, but their identity is unknown.
