He reported $2500 in personal property, and owning three female slaves, ages one to 22 years, and one male slave, age eight years.
18,19 Henry was named an heir in the will of his father, dated 25 Mar 1861, to receive $5,000 in addition to the girl Chaney and other property he had already received.
20 He initially settled in the eastern part of Christian Co., but moved to near Lafayette in 1866. The 1868 tax list, the only one from that period to survive, shows him with only a town lot, a horse and two mules, and a carriage. If he was farming them it was on the property of others, probably his mother's. He eventually ended up with nearly 1,000 acres, with 700 in cultivation, next to his parent's farm. No record has been found of how he acquired that land.
15,21 Henry and Elizabeth sold his interest in father’s estate, a grocery store house on the north side of Main St. in LaFayette, and a distillery in Little River known as the Williams Distillery to her aunt, Permelia S. Walton, on 11 May 1868, for $6,000.
