He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Washington Twp., Tazewell Co., Illinois G, in the household of his parents.23
He was a carpenter for a time, working with his older brother Henry, who was a contractor and bulder.24,25
Sebastian married first Anna Katherine Ruppel, daughter of Henry Ruppel and Anna Gehla Berlet, and sister of his brother John's wife, on 31 Dec 1885 in Germanville, Livingston Co., IllinoisG.8,9,10
Sebastian and Anna settled in Holton, KansasG, after they married, where they lived for five years.26
In Holton he worked as a mechanical engineer. In 1888 he and Louis A. Walter, husband of his wife's sister, joined with Dr. M. B. Smyth, Mayor John S. Hopkins and Ex-county Clerk John Q. Myers to apply for a charter as an electric light association in Holton. They had purchased a lot on Wisconsin Ave., planning erect substantial machinery there, inclluding a new 60 horse power engine, and suitable dynamos. The company was to have storage batteries and to extend its line to all parts of the city. The system is the best in use and will give Holton a light second to none in the state.27,28
Sebastian and Louis sold their interest in the light plant in 1890 and set off to Oregon to look for a new location. The newspaper reported that if they were not pleased with that state they would return to their old home.29
Apparently they found nothing interesting in Oregon, as Sebastian and Anna moved their young family to Chatsworth, IllinoisG, by 1891.30,31
Operated a 160 acre farm of his wife's parents, and a grain elevator, in Chatsworth.32,33,34,35,36 He held many local offices. Among them were justice of the peace, shool director, commisioner of highways, and member of the high school board of trustees for many years.37,38 When a post office was established in GermanvilleG 6 Apr 1893, Sebastian was named the first post master.39
Sebastian and Anna appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Germanville Twp., Livingston Co., Illinois G, enumerated 20 Jun 1900, reporting they were renting their farm. Their children Laura, Nellie, Luella, Esther, Ruth, Rachel, and Eva were listed as living with them, as was Henry Jacob Glabe, son of his brother and her sister. Henry was described as "help," no doubt needed on the farm since there were only daughters in the family to this point.4
Anna's father moved in with her and Sebastian after his wife died in 1902. Sebastian and Anna appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Germanville Twp., Livingston Co., Illinois G, enumerated 10 May 1910, reporting the family owned its farm, mortgage free. Their children Luella, Esther, Ruth, Rachel, Eva, Alice, Seberta, and Paul were listed as living with them, as was Anna's father, Henry Ruppel, and John Vaubes, a 25-year-old hired man.40
Sebastian retired by 1920 and he and Anna moved into ChatsworthG.41 They appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois G, on 6th St., enumerated 14 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, mortgage free. Their children Luella, Eva, Seberta, and Paul were listed as living with them. Their daughter Nellie and her husband were apparently living "around the corner" as they and their children were listed on Oak St., as the second following household.42
His wife died on 14 Jul 1920 in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., IllinoisG.43,44,45
Sebastian married second Mattie W. Bush, daughter of William A. Bush and Elizabeth Weathered, in 1927. She was the widow of Alvin R. Hill.11,12,13
Sebastian and Mattie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois G, enumerated 14 Apr 1930, reporting they owned a home valued at $7,500, and owned a radio.46
Mattie died on 7 Nov 1938 in Chatsworth, Livingston Co., IllinoisG.47,11,48
Sebastian appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Chatsworth, Livingston Co., Illinois G, enumerated 25 Apr 1940, reporting he owned a home valued at $2,500. His son Paul was listed as living with him, as was his wife, Julia Janet Arnold. Sebastian and Paul both reported they had been living in the same house in 1935, while Julie had been living in Peoria. They were apparently living close to his daugher Nellie and her husband as they were listed as the following household.49
Sebastian died on 7 May 1940 in Fairbury, Livingston Co., IllinoisG, at age 80.14,15,16 He was buried on 9 May 1940 in Chatsworth Cemetery, Chatsworth, Livingston Co., IllinoisG.17,18,19
