Narrative:

     Robert Garrett was born on 12 Mar 1824 in County Down, Ireland.7,8,9
     Robert arrived in New York on 24 May 1847, aboard the Glenmore, having sailed from Belfast. His occupation was listed as laborer.17,18 He settled in Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky.3
     He was a merchant in Caldwell Co. for some ten years. By 1860 he was a bank clerk.19,20,21
     Robert appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 26 Jul 1850, apparently boarding at a tavern kept by James F. Mitchusson and his wife.22
     Robert married Ellen Mary Cobb, daughter of Caleb Clark Cobb and Mary W. Machen, on 14 Feb 1854 in Caldwell Co., Kentucky, at Dr. P. B. McGoodwin's, with James Hawthorn officiating.1,10,11
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Princeton, Caldwell Co., Kentucky, enumerated 13 Jun 1860, reporting $10,000 in personal estate. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them, as is an un-named two-month-old girl who seems to have been a daughter who died soon after.23
     Robert and Ellen moved to Kansas about 1862.24,25,26 They appeared on the 1865 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $650. Their children Mary and John were listed as living with them.27
     He opened a wholesale grocery store at 3rd and Cherokee Sts., operating it until about 1867.28 He then opened a lumber business at 6th and Cherokee Sts.. His son John joined the business by 1880. After that the firm was known as Garrett & Co.29,30,31,32,33,34 He was also one of the founders of the Manufacturers' National Bank.3
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, enumerated 22 Jun 1870, reporting $13,000 in real estate and $20,000 in personal estate. Their children Mary, John, Samuel and Frank were listed as living with them, as was Bridget Buckley, 42 year-old domestic servant born in Ireland.35
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1875 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Their children Mary, John, Samuel, Frank and Joseph were listed as living with them.36
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Their children John, Samuel, Frank and Joseph were listed as living with them, as is Mary's husband, Joseph S. Keith, and Carrie Baker, a 23-year-old servant.37
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1885 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Their children Samuel, Frank and Joseph were listed as living with them.38
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1895 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Their children John and Joseph were listed as living with them, as were his niece, Ruth U. Garrett, John's wife, Annie, and Emma Jackson, a Black servant, age 39.39
     Robert left a will dated 6 Jun 1896, in which he bequeathed their home on South Broadway and $5,000 in government bonds to his wife for her lifetime. After payment of his debts and final expenses, she was also to receive half the remaining estate. The other half was to go to their five surviving children. He named his wife and son John as executors.40
     Robert and Ellen appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at 500 Broadway, enumerated 11 Jun 1900, with Ida Lamb, a 25-year-old cook also in the household.41
     Robert died on 20 Jul 1901 in 500 South Broadway, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at age 77, at his residence.12,9,13 He was buried on 23 Jul 1901 in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, in the Garrett family lot.14,15,16
     His will was probated on 9 Aug 1901. His son John, one of his named executors, having been murdered, and his wife, the other named executor, declining to serve, the court appointed his son Samuel as adminsitrator of the estate. The value of his estate was estimated as between $150,000 and $200,000, consisting of government bonds, notes secured with gilt-edge mortgages, the lumber yard, and farm, city and mining properties.42,40
