Murdered by a Deranged Man --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Mike Kelly, a bachelor, was reclusive, suspicious of others, and embraced unconventional ideas strongly. He was charged with insanity and committed to the asylum at Topeka, in part on the testimony of John and others. When he was released several years he returned to his home at 729 Osage St., obsessed with the idea that John and the others were plotting against him. He made repeated threats on their lives, and on 24 Jul 1901 he left home with two pistols and a basket of ammunition. Finding his first two intended victims not at their businesses, he went to the window outside John's office and shot him through the window, then shot him five more times. After shooting a doctor who came to John's aid, Kelly engaged police officers in the street, wounding three of them before being fatally shot by one of them.35
John died on 24 Jul 1901, in his office at 6th and Cherokee Sts., Leavenworth, Kansas, at age 41.13,14,15 He was buried on 26 Jul 1901 in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, in the Garrett family lot.16,17
John died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 9 Aug 1901, to Edwin W. Crancer. The value of his estate was estimated in court at $25,000. His widow was to receive under the law both his estate and his share of his father's estate.33,36
