Joining the Family Lumber Business --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
He was a clerk at Robert Garrett & Co., the lumber business operated by his father and older brother John, in 1885. He was a bookkeeper there by the following year.23,24,25
Samuel married Letitia W. Bowers, daughter of Abraham S. Bowers and Mary Elizabeth Fullerton, on 23 Mar 1887 in Leavenworth Co., Kansas.11,12,13
Samuel and his brother-in-law Joseph S. Keith operated a store for a time in Kansas City, Missouri, apparently with Samuel's father as a sponsor, under the name of Garrett, Keith, & Co. It is listed in 1887 as a wholesale fruits business, and in 1888 and 1889 as commercial merchants, at 505 Walnut St. The business was dissolved 16 Sep 1889, with the building available for rent and the fixtures for sale.26,27
Samuel and Letitia appeared on the 1895 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Their children Robert and Mary were listed as living with them, as were his cousin, William Francis Cobb, and Linn Spahn, age 18, relationship unknown.28
Samuel was named an heir in the will of his father dated 6 Jun 1896, to receive an equal share with his four surviving siblings of his estate after their mother received the family home on South Broadway, $5,000 in government bonds, and half the remaining estate after payment of expenses. The five children were to receive their mother's share after her death.29
Samuel and Letitia appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, at 608 Olive, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting that the family rented its home. Their children Robert and Mary were listed as living with them, as were her father, his cousin, William Francis Cobb, and Emma Cambell, a 44-year old Black servant.3
Samuel continued as bookkeeper of the family lumber business until the death of his father and brother in 1901. After that, the firm was known as Robert Garrett Lumber Co. W. G. Fuller was president and Samuel secretary and treasurer, owning the firm as partners.30,31,32
His father's will was probated on 9 Aug 1901. His brother John, one of his named executors, having been murdered, and their mother, the other named executor, declining to serve, the court appointed Samuel as adminsitrator of the estate.33,29
Samuel and Letitia appeared on the 1905 State Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas,, reporting they owned the home, which seems to have been his parents' home before his father's death. Their children Robert and Mary were listed as living with them, as were his mother, her father, and Henry Broom, apparently a boarder, who was involved in manufacturing.34
In Jan 1907 Samuel sold his interest in Robert Garrett Lumber Company to Fuller, and the firm was re-named the W. G. Fuller Lumber Company. By that time the company had branches in several Kansas towns.35,36
Moving to Kansas City --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
Samuel and Letitia moved to Missouri by 1909.37,38 They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at 2616 Benton, enumerated 21 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Robert and Mary were listed as living with them.39
In Kansas City Samuel formed the Garrett Cement, in partnership with Robert. J. Johnson. Samuel was president of the firm, which was in operation by 1909. In 1911 Samuel applied to the circuit court for receiver to straighten out the affairs of the company, charging that his former partner had tampered with the business.37,40,41
In the 1911 city directory Samuel was listed as president of Missouri Cement & Supply Co. In the next two issues he was listed as president of General Supply Co., with offices in the same building. In the 1914 issue he was listed as with the Garrett Supply Co., at a different address. In 1915 and 1916 he was listed as secretary of Central Cement Construction Co.42
Seeking New Lines of Business --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
About 1917 Samuel gave up the construction supply business and became involved in a variety of other enterprises. In the 1917 city directory he was listed as a broker, without listing what he was selling. In the 1918 issue he was listed as a bookkeeper for Adfilm Co., a manufacturer of motor-operated motion picture projectors. The 1919 issues listed him as involved with oil leases. in 1920 he was describing his occupation as investments, though just what role he played is not clear.43,44
Samuel and Letitia appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at 1115 E. 34th, enumerated Jan 1920, reporting that they rented their home. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them, as was her husband, Frank Peter Berry.45
Apparently the investment field had proven unrewarding for Samuel, as about 1922 he returned to the building supply business. In 1922 his occupation was listed in the city directory as simply "brick." By 1923 he was an employee of the Reliable Lumber & Coal Co. About 1925 he became a salesman in the lumber and millwork business, first for the Sowers-Taylor Co., and about 1930 for Shannon & Bloomgarten.46,47,48
Samuel and Letitia appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at 3304 Virginia Ave., enumerated 8 Apr 1930, reporting that they rented their home, for $55 per month, and owned a radio.49
Samuel died on 7 Feb 1937 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at age 71.14,15,16 He was buried on 11 Feb 1937 in Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, in the Garrett family lot.17,18
