Narrative:

Joseph S. Keith was born on 28 Aug 1851 in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., Virginia.6,7,8,9
He was a farm laborer in 1870, presumably on the family farm.17
He moved to Missouri with his parents by 1870. The family has not been found in the 1860 census, and just when they moved is unknown. He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Cuivre Twp., St Charles Co., Missouri, in the household of his parents, Samuel Keith and Sarah Ann Foley.18
His mother died on 27 Aug 1870, when Joseph was 18 years old.19,20
His father died on 12 Aug 1871, when Joseph was 19 years old.21,22
Joseph married Mary E. Garrett, daughter of Robert Garrett and Ellen Mary Cobb, on 24 Sep 1879 at her parents' home at 500 Broadway, Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, with Rev. W. N. Page officiating. A large number of "intimate friends of the family" were present, and the gifts were "very costly and numerous," in the view of one observer eclipsing in value any wedding for years.10,11,12
Joseph was a traveling agent for Robert Keith & Co., a furniture and carpet firm, at the time of his marriage. Whether he was related to the founder of that firm is unknown.23
Joseph and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Leavenworth, Leavenworth Co., Kansas, in the household of Robert Garrett and Ellen Mary Cobb, her parents.24
Joseph and his brother-in-law Samuel C. Garrett operated a store for a time in Kansas City, Missouri, apparently with Samuel's father as a sponsor, under the name of Garrett, Keith, & Co. It is listed in 1887 as a wholesale fruits business, and in 1888 and 1889 as commercial merchants, at 505 Walnut St. The business was dissolved 16 Sep 1889, with the building available for rent and the fixtures for sale.25,26
He apparently returned to Robert Keith & Co. after his venture with his brother-in-law. In Oct 1891 he left that firm and joined North, Orrison & Co. and placed newspaper advertisements inviting his customers come to his new firm.27
Joseph and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at 1406 Tracy Ave., enumerated 7 Jun 1900, reporting that they rented their home. Their children Nellie and Garrett were listed as living with them, as was George T. Coleman, his nephew, age 23, and Margaret Burns, a 26-year-old servant.28
He later became a salesman of soap.29,30
His wife died on 7 Mar 1910 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri.31,32
Joseph appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Kansas, Jackson Co., Missouri, at 3021 College Ave., enumerated 21 Apr 1910, reporting he owned his home, which was mortgaged. His daughter Nellie was listed as living with him, as was her husband, Richard Stevenson Campion.33
Joseph died on 3 Jul 1910 in Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri, at age 58.13,14 He was buried on 5 Jul 1910 in Elmwood Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri.15,16
