G, enumerated 29 Sep 1860, reporting real estate valued at $32,700 and personal estate of $1,800. Their daughter
Lulye, his children by a prior marriage, Lynn and Martha, and her son by her prior marriage,
David D. Mitchell, were listed as living with them, as are three young men who were apparently boarders: A. I. Payor, a merchant; James B. Fletcher, a carpenter; and Joel Cochran, a clerk. There were 14 slaves reported in the household, plus one belonging to Payor.
2,15 John was a farmer before the war, then became a manufacturer of woolen goods. He was identified with various business interests and accumulated a very comfortable fortune, which was slost in later years by "bad investments and misplaced confidence."
