     James was in the U.S. Navy in World War II, starting his service 7 May 1941. He was serving on the distroyer USS Shaw when it was in Pearl Harbor for repairs, where it was seriously damaged by the Japanese attach 7 Dec 1941. The forward magazine exploded spectacularly, which was captured in a widely recognized photograph by a navy photographer. Shortly before his discharge he was a part of the naval support for the "Able" and "Baker" atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in Jun and Jul 1946.12,13,14
     James married Alvina M. Gapsch, daughter of Edward Gapsch and Caroline M. Barkhau, on 7 May 1949 in Randolph Co., ArkansasG, with John R. Shiuley, Jr., justice of the peace, officiating.6,7
     James and Alvina appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Rock Twp., Jefferson Co., Missouri, G in the household of Edward Gapsch and Caroline M. Barkhau, her parents. Their daughter Nancy was listed with them.15
     He was a laborer doing asphalt work in 1950, reporting in the 1950 census he had worked 40 hours the prior week.16
     James and Alvina lived on her father's farm in Fenton, MissouriG, and she continued to live there after his death until shortly before she died.17

They were shown on the passenger list as from Saxony, with a stated destination of St. Louis, and having traveled in steerage class.14,15,16
     Moritz married Johanna Pruetzel, daughter of Charles Pruetzel and Marie Hertel, on 21 Nov 1897 in St. Lucas Evangelical Church, Sappington, St. Louis Co., MissouriG, with S. Kruse, pastor, officiating.7,8

G, enumerated 11 Apr 1930, reporting that the family owned its home, and had no radio. Their children Moritz and Robert were listed as living with them, as well as his father, Edward W. Gapsch.20
     Moritz and Johanna appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Lemay Twp., Missouri, on Tesson Rd. G, enumerated 16 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $12,000, and had lived in the same house in 1935.21
     He was a farmer on his own truck farm, by 1920 on a farm he owned. In 1940 he reported that he had worked 60 hours the last week of March, and had 52 weeks the prior year.22,23,24,25,26
     His wife died on 23 Dec 1946.10,11,27
     Moritz died on 14 Feb 1952 in Concord Village, St. Louis Co., MissouriG, at age 76, at his home.9,10,11 He was buried on 16 Feb 1952 in St. Lucas Cemetery, Sappington, MissouriG, next to his wife.12,13

     Moritz owned a tavern (along with brother Robert) and the property was in an area later used for development, providing them a handsome profit. Mortiz claimed he had to quit school about 4th grade, but was able to retire early in life.15
     Moritz died in Jul 1979 in St. Louis, St. Louis Co., MissouriG, at age 74.10
