Death: 2 Jul 1950, Ouachita Parish, Louisiana,9,6
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Ruston, Lincoln Parish, Louisiana,10

Narrative:

LaRue Maxey was born in Dec 1882 in MississippiG.4,5,6
LaRue appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Clarksdale, Coahoma Co., Mississippi G, enumerated 13 Jun 1900, reporting she was renting her home. Why she was listed as living alone when not yet 18 years old, not listed as attending school nor with an occupation, is unknown.1
LaRue graduated from the Training School for Nurses at the Louisville City Hospital, Louisville, KentuckyG, in the class of 1903, in a class of eleven graduates.11 After graduation she accepted a position as superintendent of the Berlin Hospital, in Berlin, PennsylvaniaG.12
It seems likely that LaRue responded to a request like the one J. A. Murray, of the medical staff at the Berlin Hospital Association, sent to the City Hospital Training school in Cincinnati:
WANTED–Within a few weeks, a graduated nurse to superintend and manage a small hospital of about fifteen beds. Age, 24 to 33; height, 5 feet to 5 feet 6; weight, 118 to 145; fine personal appearance, neat and stylish; elegant form, well developed, good looking, pretty mouth, teeth and eyes; must not wear a No. 3 shoe; nice complexion; medium or light brunette; splendid health and disposition; popular with physicians and nurses; good education. Send a recent photo, with application. The former will be returned. State whether born and reared in city or country; single, married or widowed; salary expected.
P.S. – A good musician, vocal or instrumental, will be appreciated.
There were no aspirants from the Cincinnati school, but it seems the request found its way to LaRue's school. Since she was just reaching age 22 she did not meet the minimum requested age but got the appointment anyway.13
LaRue married Thomas Henry McNeill, son of Malcom M. McNeill and Eliza M. Burke, on 6 Feb 1905 in Cairo, Alexander Co., IllinoisG, with Rev. Edward L. Roland, rector of the Church of the Redeemer, officating.7,8

Narrative:

Frank Rivers MacNeill was born on 19 Mar 1885 in 943 West Monroe St., Chicago, Cook Co., IllinoisG.4,5,6
His birth record shows his surname spelled as McNeill. But by the time he left home his father had changed the spelling to MacNeill, and Frank used that spelling as an adult. While he used that spelling for all official documents the McNeill spelling continued to appear in records prepared by others, such as census forms and city directories.17,18,19
Neither Frank nor his father have been found in the 1900 census. They were not with his mother, who was listed in the household her brother Frank in Leake Co., MississippiG.20
He moved to Atlanta, Georgia, with his parents by 1903.21,22
He was a telephone operator by 1903, and was a clerk with the Bell Telephone Company two years later.23
Frank graduated from Georgia Institute of TechnologyG in 1906, having been a founding member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity chapter there.3

In 1910 he was doing that work for a fire extinguisher company.24,25 Frank appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas, at 319 Main St. G, enumerated 4 May 1910, as a roomer at the Imperial Hotel. There were also two other employees of the fire extinguisher company listed there, a steam fitter and a machinist.26
Frank married first Mabel W. Abbott, daughter of William Henry Abbott and Mary Dacora Wood, on 15 Oct 1910 in Hall Co., GeorgiaG, with Rev. J. J. Christian officiating.7,8
After their marriage Frank and Mabel lived with his parents, at 96 E. Linden Ave., AtlantaG, for several years.27
He was working as a draftsman for the Cotton Insurance Association, a group providing re-insurance to companies insuring cotton crops, by 1911.27
The 1915 Atlanta city directory reported that Frank had moved to Dallas, TexasG, but it appears Mabel did not join him.28 By 1918 Frank and Mabel were both back in Atlanta, when they were living at her parents' home, 532 Lawton St. G.29 Frank registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at 532 Lawton St., Atlanta, GeorgiaG, reporting he was employed as a clerk for Queen Insurance Co. in Atlanta.1
Frank and Mabel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Atlanta, Fulton Co., Georgia, G in the household of her parents.30
In the 1920 census his occupation was recorded as an engineer working in the constructing and building industry, which is perplexing since all other sources during this period show him in the insurance industry.31
Frank went to Florida in 1920 as state agent for the Hartford Insurance Co., while Mabel remained with her parents in Atlanta G.32,33 Frank apparently returned briefly to Atlanta about 1923, when he and Mabel were listed as living with her parents. He was listed as an insurance agent there.34

Frank and Ann moved to Atlanta for a time, living at 1396 Piedmont Ave. NE, G but apparently returned to Florida soon after. The firm appeared in the 1929 city directory and again in 1930, but by then Frank was no longer listed as a participant.39

Military Service --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

John served in Col. Sion H. Rogers' regiment, the 47th North Carolina infantry, in the Confederate army. No official record of his service has been found. He was probably in to Company G, which mustered at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina G on 11 Apr 1862, since that was the only company of this regiment recruited in Granville Co. He served until "the hardships of army life broke down his health and forced him to accept a discharge" in the words of his obituary. That would seem to have been before Jan 1863, the date of the earliest surviving muster roll of that company.19,20,21
On 28 Feb 1865 John wrote to Gen. John C. Breckinridge from his home in Kittrell, proposing to raise a battalion of Negro volunteers. He said he supposed that would "be sanctioned by all true masters." Saying that his health had improved since his discharge, he asked for a commission in proportion to the soldiers raised, as a Captain if he raised 100, a Major if he raised a battalion, and command of a regiment if he raised that many. It appears he was asked to submit recommendations supporting his competency to command 30 Mar 1865. Gen. Lee's surrender ten days later ended the matter.22
John married Ellen Meshew McNeill, daughter of Thomas Henry McNeill and Rebecca Ann Tuck, on 14 Dec 1869 in Christian Co., KentuckyG, with T. J. Randolph officating.8,9,10,11
John and Ellen settled in his native North Carolina after their marriage. They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Kittrells, Granville Co., North CarolinaG, in the household of his parents.23

Entangled is His Wife's Family Affairs --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

John was named an executor in the will of Malcom McNeill, his wife's grandfather, along with her brother Malcom and their cousin, Malcolm Caruthers.24 While John was named one of the executors, there is little evidence that he took an active part in managing the estate. It seems to have left that role to his wife's brother Malcom.25
John and Ellen appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Kitteill, Granville Co., North Carolina G, enumerated 21 Jun 1880. Their children Mary, Thomas, Ellen, and George were listed as living with them, as were two female servants, ages 9 and 25, and three male servants identified as labors.26
Ellen and John sold her one-ninth interest in the northern half of her grandfather's plantation in Christian Co., KentuckyG, which he had left to her and her siblings, to her brother Malcom on 8 Jun 1882, for $400.27 They sold her one-ninth interest in his 4,100-acre property west of Clarksdale, Coahoma Co., MississippiG, to Malcom the same day, for $500.28
He joined with a number of her siblings, their spouses, and the children of her deceased sister, in filing a contest to the will of Sarah Elizabeth Tuck, his wife's aunt, on 20 Oct 1883. When the case was tried before a jury in Shelby County Circuit Court in early 1885 they lost. They appealed the decision to Tennessee Supreme Court where they lost again when the case was heard in the Apr 1886.29

Prospering in North Carolina --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

He was a very successful farmer.30,31 He was reported to have been one of the wealthiest men in the county. He also owned valuable property in Chicago, and traveled there occasionally to tend to his interests. Whether he had invested there, or this was the property his wife had inherited from her grandfather, is not clear.32,33
John left a holographic will (one handwritten by the testator and not witnessed) dated 22 Sep 1896. In it he left all his personal property to his wife. He also left her all his lands for her lifetime. After her death they were to be divided equally between his two children.34
John had been sick for some time, several times dangerously so, when he was taken to a "home asylum" near Chicago, where he could receive the "best of care." He left on 19 Nov 1898 on a train with his wife and her brother Rivers, and their two children. The railroad stopped the train at their home so they could board there.35
John died on 2 Jan 1899 in Chicago, Cook Co., IllinoisG, at age 57.12,13,14 He was buried on 12 Jan 1899 in Crudup Family Cemetery, Kittrell, Vance Co., North CarolinaG.15,16
His will was proved on 27 Jan 1899 in Vance Co.G by the testimony of his son, who stated it was found among his valuable papers, and of three other witnesses who testified that it was in his handwriting.36

      Children with Ellen Meshew McNeill

One source shows Ellen and John with an additional child, May MacNeill, but no other record of her has been found. There is no stone for her in the family cemetery, and the 1900 census shows Ellen as the mother of five.37,38,39
