Narrative:

     Sarah Elizabeth Riegel was born on 20 Mar 1842 in Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.8,9,10
     She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Turbut Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of her parents, Jacob K. Riegel and Christiana Ohl.17
     Her father died on 13 Sep 1857, when Sarah was 15 years old.18 Sarah appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Milton, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, in the household of John Haag and Mary Elizabeth Knauss, neighbors of her family. Her younger brother Benjamin was apparently living close by, as the family he was living wtih was listed next.19
     Sarah married Frederick J. Shurtz on 1 Oct 1867 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, with Rev. Henry Wiegard officiating.11,12,13
     Sarah and Frederick appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Centerville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, enumerated 2 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $8,500 and personal estate of $1,000. His children Mary, Margaret, Perry, Anna, Horace, Martha and Clara by his first marriage and their daughter Elenora were listed as living with them, as was James Myer, age 77, a farm laborer.20
     Sarah and Frederick moved to Iowa about 1880 with at least eleven of their children. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Fisher Twp., Fremont Co., Iowa, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. His children Horace and Clara by his first marriage, and their children Elenora, Harry, Charles, Edwin, Wilmer, Calvin and Mable were listed as living with them.21
     Sarah and Frederick appeared on the 1885 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa. His children Rachel and Anna by his first marriage, and their children Elenora, Harry, Charles, Edwin, Wilmer and John were listed as living with them, as was Christopher Feather, age 44, no occupation shown and relationship unknown.22
     Sarah was named an heir in the will of Christiana Ohl, her mother, dated 19 May 1891, but received nothing when she died because all the assets were used to settle debts.23
     Her husband died on 18 May 1892 in Shenandoah, Iowa.24,25,26
     Sarah appeared on the 1895 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa. Her children Elenora, Harry, Wilmer and John were listed as living with her, as was Homer Davis, age 26.27
     She operated a boarding house for time after the death of her husband by 1900.28
     Sarah appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 7 Jun 1900, reporting that she owned her home, mortgage free. Her children Harry, Charles and John were listed as living with her, as was William Colwell, a boarder age 19 and a railroad telegraph operator. Her son Wilmer and his wife apparently lived nearby as they are listed as the following household.29
     Sarah appeared on the 1905 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 101 Valley Ave., reporting her home was valued at $2,500. Her children Harry and John were listed as living with her.30,31,32
     Sarah appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 101 Center St., enumerated 13 May 1910, reporting that she owned her home, mortgage free. Her son Harry was listed as living with her.33
     Sarah appeared on the 1915 State Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, reporting that she owned a home valued at $4,000, and her church affiliation was the Congregational Church. This census does not identify households, but it appears that her son Harry was living with her since they appear on sequentially numbered cards. Her son Harry was listed as living with her.34,35
     Sarah appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at 101 College Ave., enumerated 7 Jan 1920, reporting that she owned her home, mortgage free. Her son Harry was listed as living with her.36 Sarah reported her church affiliation as Congregational.34
     Sarah died on 27 Nov 1920 at her home on Center St., Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, at age 78.14,15 She was buried on 30 Nov 1920 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.16
