Martha Jane Shurtz was born on 9 Oct 1861 in Turbotville, Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania.9,10,11 She used the nickname Mattie in preference to her given name almost exclusively.3,15,16,1She moved to St. Joseph Co., Michigan, about 1864 with her parents, Frederick J. Shurtz and Margaret Ann Derr.17
Her mother died on 18 Sep 1865, when Martha was 3 years old.18,19 Martha appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Centerville, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, in the household of her father and stepmother, Sarah Elizabeth Riegel.20
Martha moved to Iowa with her father and stepmother about 1880.
Mattie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa, enumerated 6 Jul 1880, in the household of George F. Catrill, a carpenter, and his wife and daughter. She is listed as a domestic servant.21
Martha married Barney Hinsdell, son of Bernard Hinsdell and Mary [surname unknown], on 2 Mar 1882 in Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa.12,13,14
Mattie and Barney Hinsdell moved to Wright Co, Iowa, after their marriage. They appeared on the 1885 State Census of Belmond, Wright Co, Iowa. Their daughter Clara was listed as living with them, as was her brother Horace Frederick Shurtz.22
Mattie and Barney and their young daughter moved to Norton Co., Kansas, before 1900. They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Norton, Norton Co., Kansas, enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home. Their daughter Clara was listed as living with them.23

They appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Norton, Norton Co., Kansas, reporting that they owned their home. Their daughter Clara was listed as living with them. It appears that her sister Margaret and her daughter were living nearby as they were listed next in the census record.25
Mattie and Barney appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Norton, Norton Co., Kansas, at N. First Ave., enumerated 9 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home.26 They appeared on the 1925 State Census of Norton, Norton Co., Kansas, reporting that they owned their home.27
Her husband died between 1925 and 1930.28,29
After her husband's death Mattie moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, to live with her daughter. She appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Warrensburg, Johnson Co., Missouri, in the household of Clara and John R. Sorrency, her daughter and her husband, at 135 East Market St.30
Martha died on 25 Sep 1935 in Warrensburg, Johnson Co., Missouri, at age 73.5 She was buried on 26 Sep 1935 in Sunset Hill.5
