Cora married first John Henry Sheriff, son of Andrew Sheriff and Mary McGowan, on 18 Sep 1910 in Hamilton Co., Ohio, with Rev. Watson W. Tranter officiating.12,13,14

Cora appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Bethel, Clermont Co., Ohio, at 466 Charity, enumerated 16 Apr 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $10 per month, and that she had lived in rural Clermont Co., Ohio in 1935. She was shown as married, but her husband was not listed in the household, nor has he been found elsewhere. Her children John, Clarence, Gaylord and Shirley were listed as living with her, as were Howard's wife Alma E. Custer and their infant daughter.27

Research Note, 15 Sep 2024:
No positive proof has been found that the "James E. Johnson" that Cora married was James E. Johnston, born 6 Apr 1878 and died 13 Jul 1960, and married first to Cecelia A. Harris. The conclusion that he was is based on the latter 1) being the only James E. Johns(t)on found near the right age in the area, 2) lived most of his life in Clermont Co., where Cora was born and was last known to be living before the marriage, 3) lost his first wife a year and a half before the marriage, and 4) was born with his surname spelled as Johnson but later often spelled it Johnston.
