Narrative:

Sarah Elizabeth Deaner was born on 16 Jan 1893 in Parkersburg, Wood Co., West Virginia. When she married in 1914 she claimed a birth date five years earlier, and continued to add five or six years to her age the rest of her life.5,6,7,8
Her mother died before 1900, when Sarah was under seven years old.22
Sarah appeared with her father, George H. Deaner, on the 1900 Federal Census of Parkersburg, Wood Co., West Virginia, in the household of her paternal grandparents.23
Sarah has not been found in the 1910 census. When she was married four years later she was living in Cincinnati, Ohio, and working as a domestic servant.2
Sarah married Charles Henry Carter, son of George P. Carter and Carrie Stevens, on 15 Jun 1914 in Hamilton Co., Ohio, with Rev. James M. Bailey officiating.9,10,11
Sarah and Charles appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Newport, Campbell Co., Kentucky, at 319 5th St., enumerated 12 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home. His widowed sister Maud and her three children, aged 5 to 11, were listed as living with them.24
She was known to family as Fay, and by 1930 was using that name widely, including giving it to census enumerators and even when applying for the license for her third marriage.25,15,26
Sarah and Charles were separated by 1930. While she was listed as divorced in the 1930 census, no record of a divorce has been found. They were shown as married on his death certificate and obituary later that year.27,28,11
Sarah appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 1988 Queen City Ave., enumerated 16 Apr 1930, listed as a lodger in the home of Marie Ernst, a divorced woman.29
Charles died on 20 Nov 1930 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.30
Sarah married second Granvill Davidson, son of Foster S. Davidson and Martha Jane Pitzer, by 1935 apparently, but no record of the marriage has been found. He had previously been married to Lou Carter.12,13,14
Sarah and Granvill appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Anderson Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, on Salem Pike, enumerated 11 May 1940, reporting they rented their home, for $10 per month, and that they had lived in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1935.31
Sarah and Granvill were separated by the time of his death.14 He died on 10 Feb 1947 in Union Twp., Clermont Co., Ohio.32
She was a taxi dispatcher at the time of her third marriage, but was no longer working by 1950.33,34

Her third husband died on 9 Aug 1966 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio.36,37
Sarah died on 27 Sep 1967 in Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at age 74.18,19 She was buried on 29 Sep 1967 in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Withamsville, Clermont Co., Ohio.20,21

Research Note, Sep 2024:
The evidence that Granvill was Sarah's second husband is thin, and subject to reasonable doubt. Evidence that he was includes 1) her name when she married Thomas was Fay Davison, 2) Granvill listed Mrs. Fay Davison, living with him, as the person who would always know his address, and 3) she would have known Thomas since his first wife was Granvill's sister. Evidence raising doubt includes 1) Sarah's husband in the 1940 census was shown as Russell (though his age and birth state matches Granvill's, no other record of this Russell can be found and Granvill has not be found elsewhere), 2) in the 1940 census his first wife was living with their daughter and her husband, but was listed as married, and 3) her obituary shows her a his widow. His death certificate shows him as separated but does not name his wife.15,13,38,39,40,41
