Narrative:
Ella May Grubb was born on 24 Apr 1874 in Missouri.8,9,10 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lowell, Henry Co., Iowa, in the household of her parents, Allen W. Grubb and Margaret Ann Murphy.4Ella married Charles Weller Shurtz, son of Frederick J. Shurtz and Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, on 3 Jun 1894 in Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, at the residence of the bride's parents, with Rev. William W. Burks officiating.11,12,13
Ella and Charles moved 25 miles away to King City in Jun 1897, when Charles purchased the Columbian Restaurant there.17,18
In Aug 1897 Ella traveled back to Albany to be initiated into the Esther Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and to visit her parents there for several days.19
It would appear that Ella May Grubb's second pregnancy was a difficult one. On 17 Dec 1897, a month before the birth, the local paper reported that she had been quite sick but now better. Two weeks later it reported that her husband had traveled to Albany to see her and she was "still quite poorly." On 7 Jan 1898 it reported he had again visited her and she was "not so well this week as last." Apparently it was considered unseemly to mention that her condition was related to pregnancy.20
Ella died on 14 Jan 1898 in Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, at age 23, at her parents' home, in childbirth.14,9 She was buried in Highland Cemetery.15,16
