Narrative:

     Allen W. Grubb was born on 18 Apr 1846 in McMinn Co., Tennessee.7,8,9 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McMinn Co., Tennessee, in the household of his mother, Mahala Anderson.16 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of McMinn Co., Tennessee, in the household of his mother.17 He then moved to Illinois.18
     Allen married Margaret Ann Murphy about 1868 in Illinois.10,11,12
     Allen and Margaret settled in Missouri after their marriage, remaining there six or seven years.18 They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lee Summit, Jackson Co., Missouri, enumerated 11 Jun 1870. Their daughter Evelina was listed as living with them.19
     Allen and Margaret moved to Iowa around 1875, remaining there nineteen years.18 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lowell, Henry Co., Iowa, enumerated 18 Jun 1880. Their children Ella and Frank were listed as living with them.20
     Allen and Margaret moved to Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, around 1895.18
     He was a laborer in Missouri in 1870, a carpenter in Iowa by 1880.21,22 Shortly after he became a "traveling man," or traveling salesman. At his death he was described "one of the best known ... in northwest Missouri." In his last two years he worked for a St. Louis firm selling groceries, being called in one report "the grocery tourist."23,24,25
     In late Aug or early Sep 1899 Allen was injured when a train he was boarding started unexpectedly, breaking two ribs. He did not think it serious at the time, but soon afterwards was forced to return home, where he stayed a week or two and seemed to improve. He started work again but soon had to return home again, where it was determined that the fractured rib was causing heart trouble, and he died a short time later.26,27
     Allen died on 1 Oct 1899 in Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, at age 53, at his home.7,13,14 He was buried on 3 Oct 1899 in Highland Cemetery, Albany, Gentry Co., Missouri, next to his daughter Ella and her two children.15,3
     Allen carried a "large life insurance," amounting to $12,500 including the accident provisions. A post mortem was deemed important to determine the cause of death and thus whether the accident provison applied.28
