     William Edward Britton was born on 14 Dec 1823 in Halifax Co., Virginia.7,8,9
     He was probably one of the two males under age 5 listed in the household of his father, Isham H. Britton, in the 1830 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia.18 He was probably the male age 15 to 20 listed in the household of his father in the 1840 Federal Census of North District, Halifax Co., Virginia.19
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, in the household of his parents, Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot.20,21
     William married first Sarah E. Ligon, daughter of Pascal I. Ligon and Eliza [surname unknown], on 7 Apr 1851 in Charlotte Co., Virginia.10,11
     As administrator of his father's estate, he filled an accounting 23 Aug 1852 for the estate of Adam Toot, his maternal grandfather, for whom his father had been executor.22
     His wife died on 29 Nov 1858 in Halifax Co., Virginia.23,24
     William appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Scottsburg, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 29 Aug 1860, reporting $1275 in personal estate. His children Mary, Maria, Henrietta and Sarah were listed as living with him.25
     William married second Frances A. Buster, daughter of John J. Buster and Jane Elizabeth Thomas, and older sister of the woman his younger brother Andrew had married eight years before, on 30 Jan 1866 in Halifax Co., Virginia.12,13,14
     William and Frances appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Halifax Courthouse, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 13 Sep 1870, reporting personal estate of $600. Their son Henry was listed as living with them as were his children Mary, Maria, Henrietta and Sarah by his prior marriage.26
     His second wife died on 2 Jul 1875 in Halifax Co., Virginia.27,28
     William appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, enumerated 5 Jun 1880. His children Mary, Sarah and Henry were listed as living with him.29
     He was a farmer.20,25,26,29
     William left a will dated 16 Feb 1881 stating he was of Halifax Co., Virginia, in which he named his friend Henry A. Morgan as executor. He left his son Henry a double gun, his watch, a yellow colt, and $250 in cash. He left his daughters Sarah and Henrietta one dollar each. He left $100, to be held in trust, to Henrietta's eldest son, Paul Carrington Fallen . He directed that all his real and personal estate be sold and the proceeds be equally divided between his son Henry, his daughter Mary, and Sarah's son Conrad Whear Britton, whose share was also to be held in trust.30
     William died about Mar 1881, probably on 8 Mar 1881 as reported in an un-sourced online tree, but no record of that has been found.15,16 He was buried in Britton Family Cemetery, Halifax Co., Virginia.17
     His will was proved on 28 Mar 1881. H. A. Morgan was qualified as executor and provided a bond of $800.30
     An inventory of his estate was filed on 29 Jun 1881 in Halifax Co. court, appraised at a total value of $626.25. It consisted of furniture, kitchen ware, farm tools, produce, and livestock. The most significant items were lots of tobacco and bacon, appraised at $40 each, one lot of corn at $50, a wagon at $40, cattle at $25, three mules totaling $170, and a mare and the yellow colt at $40 each. The record does not include any real estate he may have owned.31
     The same day the executor filed a report of the personal property he had sold on 22 Apr 1881, for a total of $584.97. Many of the household items and furniture, the wagon, many of the farm tools, and a black mule were purchased by his daugther Mary. Some of the household items, half the bacon, and a cow and calf were purchased by Sarah.32
