On 1 May 1843 John was granted patents for three adjacent parcels of land in Carroll Co., MissouriG, under the 1820 "Sale-Cash Entry" act. One contained 80 acres, and the other two contained 40 acres each, for a total of 160 acres. That act set the minimum price of public land at $1.25 per acre, with a minimum purchase to 80 acres, and required payment in cash, not on credit.13,14,15
John and Mariah appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Carroll Co., MissouriG, enumerated 8 Nov 1850, reporting real estate valued at $2,000.       On 1 Oct 1851 John was granted a patent for a 160-acre parcel of land Carroll Co., about three miles south of his existing property and four miles west of Bogard. The Streets Family Cemetery was later established on this property. This parcel was granted under a warrant he had acquired, originally issued to sergeant Jeremiah Kelly under the 1847 "Scrip-Warrant" act. That act provided script or warrants redeemable for land for service in the war with Mexico.16
John was issued letters of administration in Probate Court, Carroll Co.G, for the estate of Joseph A. Street, his supposed brother, who had died intestate (without leaving a will). The date of the appointment has not been found, but there must have been considerable delay in learning of and proving Joseph's death. The first probate records found are the filing of an inventory and John's posting of a bond on 10 Aug 1852.17,18

An Extensive Probate --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

John died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 26 Jul 1887 in Probate Court, Carroll Co.G, to Melkager, his youngest son.28
An appraisal of his personal property was submitted 30 Jul 1887, totaling $1,347. It included a span of black mare mules appraised at $275, two mares and colts at $165, and 30 head of cattle and hogs. There were 150 bushels of corn valued at $150, 22 acres of standing corn at $110, 245 bushels of wheat at $120, 320 bushels of oats at $38, and 16 tons of hay at $65. Wagons, farm implements, and hand tools were listed, but "furniture, books, and so forth" were noted at less than $500 and excluded.29
An inventory of the estate was also completed that day. It included four of the parcels John had obtained under land grants, totaling 200 acres, so he had sold or given away 480 acres of that land. There was also a deed for another parcel, size not specified. There was $412 in one bank and $425 in another, and $1,656 in cash at home. There were 23 notes listed from various individuals, a few of them his sons or son-in-law, with a total of some $2,500 owed him.30
According to law the widow was entitled to a year's provision from the estate. On 2 Aug 1887 she was provided 15 bushels of wheat, 3 shoats (young hogs), and 15 barrels of corn, valued at $33, as part of that allowance. At intervals through Feb 1888 she was provided sugar, coffee, baking goods, wearing material and a pair of shoes valued in total at $27. In Aug 1888 she was provided coffee, sugar, a pair of slippers, and a pair of shoes, for a total of $7.50.31
The widow was entitled to $400 from the estate by law. On 2 Aug 1887 she took part of that in personal property: a cow and calf, a brood sow, four acres of standing corn, and 75 bushels of oats. The total appraised value was $61. She was paid the balance in cash.32
The administrator held a sale of John's personal property on 15 Aug 1887 at his former home, four miles west of BogardG. He advertised the mules, horses, cattle, pigs, farm produce, and many tools. The total proceeds were $1,329, of which the largest items were the pair of mules for $269, the corn in the crib for $143, and 5 steers for $100. His sons Benjamin, William, Jessie, and Charles and sons-in-law John Wesley Isom and William Hardy Key purchased a number of items, mostly hand tools and farm implements but also some of the produce and livestock.33
A crop of hay belonging to the estate was harvested in the summer of 1887. The widow was paid $15 on 8 Mar 1888 for having taking care of the crop in July. It was sold in Nov and Dec 1887 to several people, including sons William, Charles, and Jessie, for a total of $59.34
The administrator filed a first settlement on 15 Aug 1888, and an additional inventory the same day. The inventory totaled $762, including interest collected on the various obligations and two items not previously inventoried were included at their face value but noted as "insolvent, worthless, uncollectable." One of these was from William Riley Williams, widower of John's late daughter Elvira, a due bill dated 22 Nov 1875. After a payment of $25 on 23 Aug 1876 a balance of $175 remained.35
The administrator filed a final settlement on 13 Aug 1889. Between both settlements he reported finding assets totaling nearly $8,000, made up of the notes and interest on them, and personal property sold or distributed (the land was not part of his settlement). Deducting the worthless notes, prior distributions, including the widow's $400 allowance, taxes, and expenses (including his own $120 allowance as administrator) left $6,223.96 for distribution to heirs. John's living children, Sarah, Andrew, Julia, Benjamin, William, Mary, Jessie, Charles, and Melkager, each received $602.17 9/11 and the children of his late daughter Elvira split a like amount. The widow received the same amount, less the $400 allowance previously distributed. There was no explanation of how the nine-eleventh cent amounts were treated.35
Research Note, 29 Jul 2016:
Several un-sourced online trees claim that John and Joseph were brothers. No evidence has been found to prove that, nor to identify their parents. But clearly they were closely related. They married sisters, and Joseph and his wife are listed as living with John and his family in the 1850 census. After Joseph died in 1850 John acted as his administrator.

Key Events:

Birth: abt 1806, Virginia,3
Marriage: bef 1849, Arena Brady (b. abt 1818, d. bef 1878)4,5
Death: 8 Nov 1850, Weaverville, El Dorado Co., California,6,7

Narrative:

Joseph A. Street was born about 1806 in VirginiaG.3
Nothing is known about how Joseph came to be in Missouri. He may have came by way of Ohio with his supposed brother John, but if so no record of him has been found there.
On 7 Sep 1838 Joseph was granted a patent for 40 acres of land in Carroll Co., MissouriG, about eight miles south and west of Carrollton. He made the purchase under the 1820 "Sale-Cash Entry" act. That act set the minimum price of public land at $1.25 per acre, with a minimum purchase to 80 acres, and required payment in cash, not on credit.8
Joseph appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Sugar Tree Bottom, Carroll Co., MissouriG, with a household consisting of one male age 30 to 40 (himself), and one male slave age 10 to 34. Both were reported to be working in agriculture.9
On 1 Jul 1845 Joseph was granted a patent for a second 40-acre parcel, about a mile north of the first, also under the 1820 act.10 On 1 Jun 1848 Joseph was granted a patent for a 160-acre parcel, about one mile north of the prior one, again under the 1820 act.11 He apparently continued to farm some or all of this property as he reported is occupation in 1850 as farmer.12
Joseph married Arena Brady, daughter of Benjamin Brady and Sophia Flora, before 1849.4,5
Joseph appeared with Arena and their son Paul on the 1850 Federal Census of Carroll Co., MissouriG, in the household of John M. Street, thought to be his brother, and his wife Mariah Brady, Arena's sister. He reported real estate valued at $650.12 The census was supposed to record who was in the household on 1 Jun 1850, and it appears that Joseph had actually departed Missouri long before the enumerator arrived.
He had gone to California and died there the very day the census record was made. He died in the home of Thomas J. Hardwick, presumably the same Thomas J. Hardwick who had married in Carroll Co., Missouri in 1838. They both had no doubt gone to California in response to the gold rush then running there.7,6,13
Joseph died on 8 Nov 1850 in Weaverville, El Dorado Co., CaliforniaG, at age ~44.6,7
Hardwick sold Joseph's belongs, which included a gun, a pistol, skillet and fry pan, two blankets, a pair of boots and a coat, and prospecting equipment. He received $50.15 for them, then submitted a claim against the estate for the balance of $98 he was owed.14
Joseph died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued in Probate Court, Carroll Co.G, to John M. Street, his supposed brother. The date of the appointment has not been found, but there must have been considerable delay in learning of and proving Joseph's death. The first probate records found are the filing of an inventory and John's posting of a bond on 10 Aug 1852.15,16
The inventory lists two parcels of land, the 160-acre parcel Joseph obtained in 1848 and another of 27 acres. So he had disposed of the two 40-acre parcels. The inventory also list two notes due him, with a balance due of $29.83.15
The administrator petitioned the court on 10 Nov 1852 for permission to sell as much of the real estate as needed to pay the debts of the estate. He reported debts of $64, including the claim of Thomas Hardwick in California, and assets of only $29 to pay them. After allowing for comments the court approved the sale, to be held in front of the courthouse door on 14 Mar 1853. An appraisal of the property was submitted the day of the sale, showing it to be worth $600, but it sold for only $345.17
An additional inventory was filed 02 May 1865 to report a note for $20, and a second one 2 Apr 1856 to report collection of $5 in rent for a horse. The administrator filed a first settlement 7 Nov 1853, a second 4 Dec 1854, and a final one 7 Oct 1856. They reflect $435 in assets collected, including the sale of the real estate and interest on fund held. Debts, taxes, expenses and the administrator's allowance of $35 totaled $135. The widow was paid $49.83 on 19 Aug 1856 for reasons not clear, leaving a balance of $249. No record has been found of how that balance was distributed.18
Research Note, 29 Jul 2016:
Several un-sourced online trees claim that Joseph and John were brothers. No evidence has been found to prove that, nor to identify their parents. But clearly they were closely related. They married sisters, and Joseph and his wife are listed as living with John and his family in the 1850 census. After Joseph died in 1850 John acted as his administrator.

Narrative:

Barzilla Brady was born about 21 Dec 1815 in OhioG.4,5,6
He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Benjamin Brady, in the 1830 Federal Census of Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OhioG.13
Barzilla married Sophia Santee on 7 Jan 1841 in Highland Co., OhioG, with Alezander Hughey, justice of the peace, officiating.7,8,9
Barzilla and Sophia Santee moved to Missouri before 1844, when their second son was born. His parents and sibling also moved there about this time, but Barzilla and Sophia returned to Ohio by 1850. They appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OhioG, enumerated 5 Sep 1850, reporting no real estate owned. Their children James and Benjamin were listed as living with them.2
Barzilla and Sophia appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OhioG, enumerated 2 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $3,220 and personal estate of $3,354. Their children James and Benjamin were listed as living with them, as was May Santee, apparently her neice.14
He operated a store for a time in the 1850's, and probably earlier. He was appointed postmaster of Centerfield effective 20 May 1851, replacing James W. Santee, who is reported by un-sourced online trees as a brother of his wife. Postmasters often were storekeepers in small towns like this. He was replaced 23 Jun 1853. He was appointed again 16 Nov 1857, serving until 26 Jun 1862. However, by 1860 he declared his primary occupation as farming on 20 May 1851 in Centerfield, Highland Co., OhioG.15,16,17
Barzilla died on 18 Dec 1869 at age ~53.10,11 He was buried in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Highland Co., OhioG.12
Barzilla seems to have left a sizable estate. The 1870 census shows his widow and two sons apparently jointly reporting real estate valued at $11,250 and personal estate of $10,060, which would seem to be his estate. But no record of his estate is found in the Highland Co. probate records.18
