Burial: Laurel Hill Cemetery, Weston, Platte Co., Missouri,9
Death: 21 Aug 1862,10,11

Narrative:

Walter R. Brady was born about Sep 1820 in OhioG.4,5,6
He was probably the male under age 5 to 10 listed in the household of his father, Benjamin Brady, in the 1830 Federal Census of Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OhioG.12 He was probably the male age 20 to 30 listed in the household of his father in the 1840 Federal Census of Fairfield Twp., Highland Co., OhioG.13
He moved to Missouri with his parents between 1840 and 1850.
Walter married Elizabeth C. Lamar, daughter of William Lamar and Rebecca Hodge.7,8
On 1 Jun 1850 Walter was granted a patent for 40 acres of land Andrew Co., about one mile north of Helena. He made the purchase under the 1820 "Sale-Cash Entry" act. That act set the minimum price of public land at $1.25 per acre, with a minimum purchase to 80 acres, and required payment in cash, not on credit.14
Walter and Elizabeth C. Lamar appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rochester Twp., Andrew Co., MissouriG, enumerated 25 Nov 1850, reporting real estate valued at $800.1
Walter and Elizabeth moved to Platte Co. before 1860. They appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Green Twp., Platte Co., MissouriG, enumerated 9 Jul 1860, reporting real estate valued at $4,800 and personal estate of $1,415. Their children Josephine, Georgia, and Elizabeth were listed as living with them, as was his mother.15
He was a farmer all his life.1,15
The Enrolled Missouri Militia was created in Jul 1862 in response to a Confederate recruiting program begun that summer behind Federal lines in northeast Missouri. The previously established Missouri State Militia did not have the resources to address the growing guerrilla attacks. The new militia composed of part-time citizen soldiers was established to free the State Militia and Federal troops for field action. Most men in this militia served only a few weeks of active duty over the course of the next two and a half years.16
Walter enrolled in Company A, 39 Regiment of the Enrolled Missouri Militia as a private 13 Aug 1862 at Weston, MissouriG. His unit was ordered into service 19 Aug 1862, and Walter was mortally wounded the next day.17
Walter died on 21 Aug 1862 at age ~41.10,11 He was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Weston, Platte Co., MissouriG.9
Walter died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 6 Oct 1862 in Probate Court, Platte Co.G, to his wife Elizabeth. On 10 Oct the court acknowledged her bond of $10,000. However, the actual bond recorded was for $6,000.18,19
An inventory of the estate was made 15 Oct 1862. It listed three parcels of land: 160 acres in Green Twp., Platte Co.; another 160 acres not described, and 80 acres in Jefferson Co., Kansas. Personal property include numerous livestock, farm implements, 18 acres of corn in the field, and 100 bushels of wheat. There were three notes listed, with a total balance due him of $137. The personal property was appraised on 22 Oct, for a total of $689, with the most significant items being 40 head of fat hogs at $140, a two-year old colt at $75, and the standing corn at $72. The administrator reported on 1 Dec that $818 had been realized from the sale of the personal property.20,21,22
Three claims against the estate seem to have been questionable, as they were brought to the court to decide. In each case they were allowed by the court after hearing testimony. Two were for small amounts, $12.50 and $20, but the one by Walter's father was for $550. The basis for the claims was not recorded.23
The settlement of the estate was apparently scheduled for the Oct 1863 term of the court, but on 7 Oct 1863 the matter was continued until the November term. However it was not taken up in that term.24 Two years later, on 10 Oct 1865, the court was made aware that Elizabeth had remarried. It revoked her letters of administration and appointed her brother Charles H. Lamar in her place. He filed a bond of $1,600 with two sureties, one of them Elizabeth's new husband.25,26
Lamer was also appointed guardian of Walter's three minor children, Josephine, Georgia, and Elizabeth.25 The same day he filed an inventory of the girls' estate. It included $431 in cash received from their mother, the prior administrator of their father's estate, a note dated 6 Jun 1864 for $250, and a second dated 6 Nov 1862 for $38. Both notes bore interest at 10%. There was also the 160-acre parcel in Green Twp. that had been inventoried in their father's estate.25
The new administrator filed his final settlement on 1 Jan 1866. It reflects assets collected of $955, made up of the notes and proceeds of sale of the personal property. Disbursements totaled $680, primarily the $550 paid Walter's father, and other debts and expenses. The record does not show how the balance of $275 was distributed. The amount previously distributed to the estates of the daughters is not reflected, so the source of that is unknown.27

Narrative:

Elizabeth C. Lamar was born about 22 Jan 1832 in TennesseeG.4,5,6
Elizabeth married first Walter R. Brady, son of Benjamin Brady and Sophia Flora.7,8
Elizabeth and Walter R. Brady appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Rochester Twp., Andrew Co., MissouriG, enumerated 25 Nov 1850, reporting real estate valued at $800.14
Elizabeth and Walter moved to Platte Co. before 1860.
Her husband died on 21 Aug 1862.16,17
Elizabeth was issued letters of administration on 6 Oct 1862 in Probate Court, Platte Co.G, for the estate of her husband Walter, who had died intestate (without leaving a will). On 10 Oct the court acknowledged her bond of $10,000. However, the actual bond recorded was for $6,000.18,19
The settlement of the estate was apparently scheduled for the Oct 1863 term of the court, but on 7 Oct 1863 the matter was continued until the November term. However it was not taken up in that term.20
Elizabeth married second John Whisman on 1 Nov 1863 in Platte Co., MissouriG, with Rev. William Barnett officiating.10,11,12 Two years later, on 10 Oct 1865, the court was made aware that Elizabeth had remarried. It revoked her letters of administration and appointed her brother Charles H. Lamar in her place. He filed a bond of $1,600 with two sureties, one of them Elizabeth's new husband, who was one of the three men who had made the inventory and appraisal of the estate three years before.21,22
Elizabeth was named an heir in the will of William Lamar, her father, dated 18 Sep 1866 in Platte Co., MissouriG, in which he left her $10, after noting that he had previously given her a negro woman and two children which she had sold. He distributed substantial amounts of cash and land to her 11 siblings and $500 to each of her three daughters by her first marriage. She was to share anything remaining with her seven younger siblings.23
Elizabeth and John appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Weston, Platte Co., MissouriG, enumerated 28 Jul 1870, reporting real estate valued at $15,600 and personal estate of $2500. Their children William, Alberta, and Blanch were listed as living with them, as were her children by her previous marriage, Josephine, Georgia, and Elizabeth.24
Her second husband died on 13 Dec 1878.25
Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Platte Co., Missouri G, enumerated 7 Jun 1880. Her children William, Alberta, and Blanch were listed as living with her, as were Anthony Iker, a 65-year-old farmer, and Emily Robinson, age 36, a servant.26
Elizabeth left a will dated 5 Sep 1890, in which she left each of her three daughters by her first marriage $5. She directed that everything that was left after paying all debts and her burial expenses be shared equally by her three children by her second marriage. She did not specify an executor.27
Elizabeth died on 3 Apr 1892 at age ~60.13 She was buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Weston, Platte Co., MissouriG.9
Her will was probated on 28 Apr 1892 in Probate Court, Platte Co.G, after some difficulty since one of the two witnesses was traveling out of state. That issue was solved by the testimony of the remaining witness and another person that the signature of the missing witness was genuine. Her son William was named as administrator.28
The inventory of the estate has not been found. The administrator filed a first settlement dated 28 Apr 1893. In it he recorded assets totally nearly $8,500, and disbursements of about $1,500, including $900 that had been disbursed to himself and his two full sisters. The final settlement has not been found.29

She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Green Twp., Platte Co., MissouriG, in the household of her parents, Walter R. Brady and Elizabeth C. Lamar.13
Her father died on 21 Aug 1862, when Elizabeth was about 3 years old.14,15
After the death of her father, and remarriage of her mother, her mother's brother Charles H. Lamar was appointed as guardian of her and her sisters' estate by the court 10 Oct 1865.16 The same day he filed an inventory of the girls' estate. It included $431 in cash received from their mother, the prior administrator of their father's estate, a note dated 6 Jun 1864 for $250, and a second dated 6 Nov 1862 for $38. Both notes bore interest at 10%. There was also the 160-acre parcel in Green Twp. that had been inventoried in their father's estate.16
Elizabeth was named an heir in the will of William Lamar, her mother's father, dated 18 Sep 1866 in Platte Co., MissouriG. She was to receive $500, to be held by her uncle Charles Lamar until she became of age or married. He was directed to loan the money "on good security" and include the interest earned when the money was paid to her.17 Her grandfather left a codicil to his will, dated 29 May 1869, in which he left some newly purchased property to his four youngest children. In exchange, they were to pay $2,000 to the estate, to be distributed at his death to five of his children, and a sixth share to be divided by Elizabeth and her two sisters.18
She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Weston, Platte Co., MissouriG, in the household of her mother and step-father, John Whisman.19
Elizabeth married first John Martin Currier, son of John Currier and Mary W. Martin, on 25 Jan 1876 in Platte Co., MissouriG, at the home of John Weisman, her stepfather, with Rev. P. J. Berness officiating.7,8,9
On 24 Jan 1878 the court ordered the administrator of the estate of her grandfather, Benjamin Brady, to pay Elizabeth $50, her one third of her late father's share of the estate.20 On 25 Jul 1878 the court ordered him to pay her remaining share, $10.74.21
Elizabeth and John settled Tennessee after their marriage. They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Maryville, Blount Co., Tennessee G, enumerated 14 Jun 1880. Their children Walter and Neeva were listed as living with them.22
Elizabeth and John were evidently divorced sometime between 1881 and 1886, but no record of that has been found.
Elizabeth had returned to Platte Co., MissouriG, by the time of her second marriage. No further record of her daughter has been found.23
Elizabeth married second Clay Carpenter, son of William Carpenter and Ann Eliza Givens, on 22 Sep 1886 in Jackson Co., MissouriG, with Rev. James M. Chaney officiating.10,11
Elizabeth was named an heir in the will of her mother dated 5 Sep 1890, in which she and her two full sisters were each left $5 and their step-siblings were to share the balance of the estate.24
