Charles M. Newlin was born on 29 Oct 1869 in New Richmond, OhioG.4,5,6 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Richmond, Wayne Co., IndianaG, in the household of his parents, Finley Newlin and Emma A. Wassman.14 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana G, in the household of his parents.15
     Charles married Nancy Odenbaugh, daughter of David Odenbaugh and Phebe Chapman, on 4 Feb 1891 in Richmond, Wayne Co., IndianaG, with Rev. Alexander Gilchrist officiating.7,8,9
     He was an assistant county auditor in 1900, and deputy county auditor by 1910.16,17
     Charles and Nancy appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana, at 36 South 9th G, enumerated 14 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home. Their children Genevieve and Simon were listed as living with them.18
     Charles and Nancy appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Richmond, Wayne Co., Indiana G, in the household of his parents, at 1120 Main St.17

     Charles moved to La Porte, Indiana by 1913, when he was rooming at 912 Monroe Ave. It is not clear whether Nancy moved at the same time or followed later.19,20
     He was working as a clerk at M. Rumely Co., a manufacturer of power farming machinery, by 1913, continuing there until 1926.19,21,22
     Charles and Nancy appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana, at 702 Perry St. G, enumerated 6 Jan 1920, reporting that they rented their home. Their children Genevieve and Paul were listed as living with them.23
      By 1923 Charles and Nancy and their son Paul were living at 112 1st St., and Charles was working as treasurer of E. A. Couturier Band Instrument Co.24
     Charles and Nancy may have moved out of La Porte for a time. They are not found in the La Porte city directories from 1924 until 1929, and their son Paul is listed as rooming at various addresses during that period. In any case they were in La Porte by 1929, when they and Paul were living at 1030½ Indiana Ave.25

      About 1929 Charles joined The Deluxe Products Corp., a manufacturer of light weight castings, cast iron pistons, and steel oil filters, as comptroller. His son-in-law, Edwin Willard Schurz, was secretary and Edwin's long-time mentor, Hobart Cable, was president of the new firm.26,27 He worked there until his death. In 1940 he reported he had worked 42 hours the last week of March, and had worked 52 weeks the prior year, earning $3,600.28 Charles's son Paul was working at the Deluxe Products Corp. as an accountant by 1938.29
     Charles and Nancy appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana G, at 1030 Indiana Ave., enumerated 7 Apr 1930, reporting that they rented their home, apparently part of a two-family building, for $70 per month, and owned a radio. Their son Paul was listed as living with them.30
     Charles and Nancy and Paul moved to 1305 Michigan Ave.G by 1938.29 They appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana G, at 1305 Michigan Ave., enumerated 2 Apr 1940, reporting that they rented their home, for $65 per month, and had lived in the same house in 1935. Their son Paul was listed as living with them.31
     His wife died in 1941.32
     Charles died on 7 Apr 1943 at age 73.10,11 He was buried on 10 Apr 1943 in Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, IndianaG.12,13

     She generally used her middle name, Edith, as an adult.14,15,1 She was a graduate of Dr. Graham Taylor's class in social welfare in ChicagoG.10
     Mary applied for a U.S. passport on 18 Jan 1911 while in BerlinG. She said she had left the U.S. on 6 Dec 1910 and was planning to stay abroad for an indefinite period before returning.1
     She was described as "wealthy and a prominent Laporte society and philanthropic woman" in accounts of her death.16
     Mary married Edwin Willard Schurz, son of Frederick J. Shurtz and Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, on 17 Jan 1913 in La Porte Co., IndianaG.7,8,9
     On 18 Oct 1913, nine months after their marriage, Edith and three other women were riding in an automobile driven by her husband, Edwin Willard Schurz, when it was stuck by a train, fatally injuring her and the other three women, and seriously injuring her husband. The other women, all society leaders, were Fannie P. Heinze, former wife of Prof. Victor Heinze of Berlin; Mrs. Carleton Shafer, who was prominent in literary circles and widow of an Indiana lawyer; and Mrs. William Brace, wife of a Washington DC druggist.17,10
     Mary died on 18 Oct 1913 in La Porte, IndianaG, at age 33.10,11

Henry D.      Henry and Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana G, enumerated 4 Jun 1880. Their children Francis, Anna, and Mary were listed as living with them.15
     Henry and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of La Porte, La Porte Co., Indiana, at 1213 Michigan Ave. G, enumerated 13 Jun 1900, reporting that they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their daughter Mary was listed as living with them.16
     He was a farmer, east of town, until 1880 when he retired from active work on the farm but continued to supervise the work there.14,15 After the death of his brother Robert he was elected a director of First National Bank. He later became vice president of the bank, holding both positions until his death.10,17
     He spent his winters in Florida, and left in late Nov 1900 for his home there. His health had been poor for some years, and he was confined to his bed about two weeks before his death.10
     Henry died on 28 Dec 1900 in Daytona, FloridaG, at age 57, at his winter home there.10,11
