Frederick appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 10 Aug 1850, in the household of Daniel Keller, a blacksmith, and his wife and family. That Frederick is listed as a blacksmith at age 18 suggests he may have been an apprentice or assistant to Keller.17

Frederick and Margaret appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis Twp., Northumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG, enumerated 20 Jul 1860, reporting no real estate but $2,000 in personal estate.      Frederick apparently gave up blacksmithing after his early training in that trade. He reported his occupation as a farmer by 1860. He continued to farm when he moved to Michigan, apparently quite successfully, judging from the size of his assets there in 1870.23,24,25
The Federal government passed a series of acts to raise revenue during the Civil War, including provisions for both excise and progressive income taxes. Frederick's name appears in a tax list dated May 1863 showing he had an annual income of $7,000 and owed $210 in tax.26

Franklin L. Snyder1,2,3

ID# 14675, (1853 - 1934)

Key Events:

Birth: 22 Sep 1853, Pennsylvania,4,5,6
Marriage: abt 1882, Christiana Riegel (b. 12 Oct 1847, d. 12 Jan 1919)7,8
Death: 24 Jan 1934, Liberty Twp., Montour Co., Pennsylvania,9
Burial: 26 Jan 1934, Montandon Cemetery,9

Narrative:

Franklin L. Snyder was born on 22 Sep 1853 in PennsylvaniaG.4,5,6
Nothing is known of Franklin before his marriage, including who his parents were, nor has any reocrd of his death been found. There is an F. L. Snyder of his age in Chillisquaque Twp., Northumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG, in the 1880 census who may have been him. That is the same general location where his future wife, who he married about two years later, was living. He was in the household of Mary A. Hoffman, a widow, and is identified as her nephew. Also living there were E. W., Jacob S. and Subilla W. Snyder, also identified as nephews and niece of Mary. The principal reason for doubt that his was Franklin is that this person's occupation is shown as shoemaker, and it is difficult to understand why someone with such a trade would later become a laborer and then a lumberman.10
Franklin married Christiana Riegel, daughter of Jacob K. Riegel and Christiana Ohl, about 1882.7,8
Franklin and Christiana moved to Shenandoah, IowaG, where her older sister, Sarah, had lived for many years. They apparently moved there after 1895, as they do not appear in the state census that year. They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Shenandoah, Page Co., Iowa G, enumerated 8 Jun 1900, reporting that they were renting their home.1
They back moved to PennsylvaniaG before 1905, as they do not appear in the 1905 Iowa state census. Franklin and Christiana appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of West Chillisquaque Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania G, enumerated 27 Apr 1910, reporting that they were renting their home.2
His wife died on 12 Jan 1919 in East Chillisquaque Twp., Northumberland Co., PennsylvaniaG.11,12
Franklin appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of East Chillisquaque Twp., Northumberland Co., Pennsylvania, at Pottsgrove and Montour Ridge Rd. G, enumerated 23 Jan 1920, reporting he was renting his home. Carrie Snyder, a sister-in-law, age 27, and her three children, Herbert, George, and Eva, were listed as living with him.13
He was a day laborer in Iowa. He was a lumberman, operating his own mountain timber business, after he returned to Pennsylvania. He had become a farmer by 1920.14,15,16,17
Franklin died on 24 Jan 1934 in Liberty Twp., Montour Co., PennsylvaniaG, at age 80.9 He was buried on 26 Jan 1934 in Montandon CemeteryG.9

Moving to Indian Territory --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Robert apparently moved shortly afterwards to the newly established town of Lawton, Comanche Co., Indian TerritoryG. The town was formed from part of the lands taken from the Indians by proclamation of President William McKinley. The initial town lots were sold at auction, beginning 6 Aug 1901. A tent city had grown up in anticipation of the auction, and banks, saloons, stores and other service industries sprang up overnight. Presumably Robert was there to take part as he was married there in September of that year.21,22
Robert married Nettie Kessinger, daughter of Catherine Christinna Kessinger, on 7 Sep 1901 in Lawton, Comanche Co., Oklahoma TerritoryG, with probate judge Warren H. Brown officiating.8,9
After their marriage Robert and Nettie moved over 200 miles northeast to Claremore, Cherokee Nation, Indian TerritoryG. While living there, "on or about" 27 Oct 1906, Nettie left Robert, according to his divorce filing.23
Robert returned to Wichita FallsG but just when is not clear. There is a Robert Cobb Jr. listed as one of four roomers on the 1910 Federal Census of Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., Texas G, at 717 Indiana St., enumerated 21 Apr 1910, who would appear to be this Robert. If so, the information seems badly confused, which is not uncommon for listings of roomers and boarders, as the information was often provided by a landlady or other person who didn't know the tenants well. In this case it is not even clear from the record who the operator of the rooming house was. Robert's age is listed as 35 when it should have been 43, his birthplace is shown as Texas instead of Mississippi, his father's is correct but his mother's is shown as Tennessee instead of Mississippi. His occupation is shown as grocery salesman, when he is known to have been an attorney. But his younger brother, and his brother-in-law both worked in the wholesale grocery business, so Robert may have worked in that business too for a time, or perhaps his landlady confused their occupation with his.24

A Vain Effort to Divorce --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Robert filed for divorce from Jeanette on 27 Mar 1911 before the Wichita Co., TexasG, district court, stating that he believed she was living in Pike Co. or Calhoun Co., Illinois, or St. Louis Co., Missouri. Unknown to him, she had already remarried.25,26 The case was called on 5 Dec 1911 but no order was passed.27 The case was again on the court's docket the following December, but was apparently not finalized then either, as the case was dismissed 3 Jun 1913 because of Robert's death.28,29

A Fatal Bar Fight --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Robert was involved in a fight with Sam Carter, a 22-year-old chauffeur, at the Gem Bar in Wichita Falls on 31 Mar 1913. His face was badly discolored and his nose was broken, according to reports. He died nine days later, with the doctor reporting that "It is possible that injures received upon head and face... contributed to death."30,31,32 Carter was charged with murder for his death, but was acquitted by a jury on 29 Jan 1914 after a brief trial. He was arrested less than a month later for assault on another man, and was again found not guilty. Three years later he died of a gunshot wound.33,34,35
Robert died on 9 Apr 1913 in 2110 10th St., Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TexasG, the home of his father, at age 46.10,11 He was buried on 10 Apr 1913 in Riverside Cemetery, Wichita Falls, Wichita Co., TexasG.12,13

Children:
      Children with Jeanette P. Kessinger:

Robert said in his divorce filing that there was no issue from his marriage to Nettie. But in the 1910 census she reported having had four children, with one living. That would appear to be Verna, who was living with her. Were the others by other fathers, or had she and Robert had children who had not survived?36,37
