8,9,10 Robert's father discovered iron ore in the area of Minnesota later known as Deerwood, in what was named the Cuyuna Range. He was largely responsible for development of ore mining there. He built the Cuyuna Iron Range Railroad, and was president of the Biwango Mining Company. The name of the range was supposedly a combination of the first syllable of his name, Cuyler, and the name of his dog, Una, and was conceived by his wife.
