Narrative:
Forest Emery Reigel was born on 6 Jan 1878 in Savannah, Missouri.8,9,10,11He moved to Kansas with his parents about 1885.18 He appeared on the 1885 State Census of Kirwin, Phillips Co., Kansas, in the household of his parents.19
He moved to Clark Co., Washington Territory, about 1892 with his parents.20,21,22
Forest purchased 40 acres, diagonally across the road from his parent's farm, on 22 Jun 1899, from John H. and Emily L. Hurt, and David Hurt, for $750. The purchase was apparently made with the proceeds of a mortgage by Forest and his parents on their farm and his new property. It was for $800, at 8% interest, due in five years. It was actually repaid sooner, on 23 Oct 1902.23 (See Map.)
He appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, in the household of his parents.5
A Struggling Farmer --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
Forest seems to have repeatedly taken out mortgages and repaid them, presumably because he was struggling financially. On 8 Oct 1906 he took a mortgage on his original property for $150, at 10% interest, for six months from Mary E. Sparks. Then on 1 Apr 1907 he took a mortgage for $800, at 8% interest, from W. W. Sparks, apparently repaying the first with the proceeds. This mortgage was due in one year, but was not paid off until 1 Apr 1913, when he took a new mortgage for $800, at 8% interest, from F. F. Myers, due in three years. It was repaid 27 Nov 1916, apparently by taking out another mortgage from F. F. Myers, dated 23 Nov 1916.24
Forest bought 40 acres located behind the farm owned by his parents from Robert Edward Gapsch and Matilda Henriksdotter on 26 Dec 1918. They were the parents of the late wife of his brother Frank.25
The 1916 mortgage was paid off 31 Dec 1918, when a new mortgage, again from F. F. Myers, was taken for $1500 at 8%. Given the amount and timing, that may have been largely to buy the 40 acre property from Robert Gapsch. On 3 Apr 1919 Forest took a mortgage on the new property for $300, at 10% interest, from the LaCenter State Bank. That loan was repaid by Forest and his new wife by taking out a larger mortgage, $1250, at 10% interest, from the same bank 9 Oct 1919. They took out yet another mortgage, from the same bank, for $1350 at 10% interest, secured by both properties, on 31 Dec 1920.26
On 1 Jun 1923 Forest sold both 40-acre parcels.27 The $1500 loan from 1918, the $1250 loan from 1919, and the $1350 loan from 1920 were all recorded as satisfied later that month.28
Forest appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, enumerated 26 Apr 1910.29
Trying Other Occupations --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
He was worked from time to time in lumbering, reporting his occupation as a log driver in the 1900 census, as a saw mill teamster in 1910, and as a logger in 1930.5,30,31
But for the most part he farmed or worked for farmers. Forest registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at La Center, Clark Co., Washington, reporting he was self-employed as a farmer.32
Forest Emery Reigel reported that he was a farmer in the 1920 census, and later worked in fruit orchards. He was listed as a nurseryman in the 1948 city directory, but with no occupation after that.31,33,34,35
His Brief Marriage --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
Forest married Anna Marie Schwankler, daughter of Marie Schwenkler, on 25 Apr 1919 in Vancouver, Clark Co., Washington, with W. S. T. Derr, Justice of the Peace, officiating.12,13
Forest and Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, enumerated 20 Jan 1920. Her daughter by a previous marriage, Marguerite Elizabeth Slaughter, was listed as living with them.36
Forest and Anna were divorced about 1922.14,15,16
According to the story told in Forest's family, Forest and Anna were divorced after she "ran off with a traveling salesman." However, the man she married next was principally a lumberman although he did for a time later identify himself as a salesman. The story may be totally fanciful, or she may have been involved with someone else before that marriage.37
Forest appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of La Center, Clark Co., Washington, enumerated 30 Apr 1930, as a boarder with Millard M. Clark, from North Carolina. Both are shown as loggers in a logging camp.38
Forest inherited, with his siblings, their parents' 20 acre farm. On 24 Oct 1931 he, Ralph, and Ida ceded to Frank the five acres nearest his farm. In 1938 and 1939 the three brothers transferred their interests in the remaining 15 acres to Ida.39,40
Moving to California --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---
Forest moved to California about 1932, living for a time in Maxwell.41,42 He appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Williams, Colusa Co., California, enumerated 29 Apr 1940, reporting he was renting his home, and had lived in the same county in 1935.43
He registered for the draft for World War II on 26 Apr 1942, while living at Maxwell, Colusa Co., California, reporting he was employed by J. R. Prine, at the Prine Ranch in Maxwell.2
Forest moved to Santa Cruz Co. by 1948, when he was living at 1712 Ocean, Santa Cruz.44 About this time Forest made a practice of extended trips visiting various relatives. He was known to announce a visit by calling from a bus station in the general vicinity and ask to be picked up. His habit of chewing tobacco and spitting out the car window onto the outside of the car led to at least on relative providing him a tin can to spit into.45
He was a laborer at a bulb ranch in 1950, reporting in the 1950 census he had not worked the prior week but was looking for work.46 During his residence there he was sentenced to five days in the county jail for disturbing the peace, in Nov 1952. The following January he was found guilty of drunkenness on a county road and fined $50.47,48
Forest appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., California, at 1000 Capitola Rd., enumerated 21 Apr 1950, reporting he lived in a trailer on the same property where his nephew Bennie lived, which was not a farm, but over three acres. His brother Ralph and his wife lived nearby, at 990 Capitola Rd.46
Forest moved in with his brother Ralph and his wife Edith at 1715 Capitola Rd. after they moved there shortly after that.49,50,51
He moved 1600 Old Highway 1, by 1954, which had been renamed as 1600 Soquel Dr. by the following year.52 He moved to 1045 N. Branciforte Ave. by 1959 and was living there at the time of his death.53,54
Forest died on 16 Nov 1962 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., California, at age 84.17 He was buried on 20 Nov 1962 in Evergreen Cemetery.6
