     Marie Belle Neiphagen was born on 23 Sep 1898 in Illinois.10,11,12 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Bloomington, McLean Co., Illinois, in the household of her parents, William Charles Niephagen and Nettie Bliss.5

     Marie married first William Frederick Glabe, son of Jacob Glabe and Emma Amelia Goller, on 23 Mar 1926 in Peoria, Illinois. He was the widower of Estella Pearl Watson.13,14,15
     Marie and William appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Peoria, Peoria Co., Illinois, at 314 North Elmwood Ave., enumerated 9 Apr 1930, reporting that the family owned a home valued at $10,000, and owned a radio.22
     William went to Pasadena, California, about 1933 for a time to pursue a cottage cheese business there.23 While he was there Marie and two of her stepdaughters, Carmen and Jessie, drove there to visit him.23,24
     According to family lore, upon their return, William sold their home in Peoria, and shortly after moved with Marie to Chico, California. Records indicate that it was actually several years later, but they did apparently move in 1938 or 1939. Daughter Carmen is the only one listed in the family home in Peoria in 1939.23,24,25
     Marie and William appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Chico, Butte Co., California, at 1321 Oleander, enumerated 4 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $4,600.26
     When they moved to Chico they bought a new home at 1321 Oleander in a then newly developing area on the north edge of town. It was a trim two-bedroom stucco house in what was probably then considered a modern style, with hip roof, little overhang, and casement windows. It had an "H" plan, with pantry, kitchen and dining room in one leg, bedrooms and bath in the other, and the living room connecting the two. Nestled in the rear was a screened porch. Built before the advent of air conditioning, the house nevertheless always seemed comfortable even in the hot summer days in the Northern Sacramento Valley. Probably part of the reason was that the living room was always dark because the drapes were always drawn. There was a detached two-car garage and a shady yard that was always bordered by flower gardens.27,28
     Marie and William appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Chico, Butte Co., California, at 1321 Oleander, enumerated 1 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm.29
     Her husband died on 18 Mar 1954 in Chico, Butte Co., California.30,31,32
     Marie married second Kenneth Swearingen around 1958 in Reno, Nevada.16
     After their marriage, Marie and Kenneth Swearingen lived in the house on Oleander St. that she and her first husband had long owned.33,27
     Kenneth died in Jul 1973 in Chico, Butte Co., California.34 After Kenneth's death she moved to Placentia, California, to live near her youngest step-daughter, Jessie.27
     Marie died on 2 May 1983 in Placentia, Orange Co., California, at age 84.17,18,19 She was buried on 5 Jun 1983 in Chico Cemetery, Chico, California, in the Masonic section of Chico Cemetery next to her first husband, William Glabe.20,21
