     His mother died before 1880, when William was under five years old.15
     He appeared with his father on the 1880 Federal Census of Anderson Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio, in the household of his paternal grandparents.16
     William married first Effie Alice Brose, daughter of Frederick S. Brose and Debra Jane Gardner, on 18 Jul 1895 in Brown Co., Ohio, with Rev. J. R. Long officiating.9,10
     He was a freight handler on a railroad by 1900.17
     William and Effie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 2848 Eastern Ave., enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Their children Edith, Clara and Lillian were listed as living with them. They were living in the same building as her older sister Louise and her husband.3
     His wife died on 8 Mar 1908.18
     William registered for the draft for World War I on 12 Sep 1918, while living at 103 8th Ave., Huntington, Wayne Co., West Virginia, reporting he was employed as timber inspector for Charles Boldt Glass Company.19 He was a foreman at a glass company by 1920.20,21
