Narrative:

Franklin R. Smith was born on 28 Jul 1864 in Huntington, Indiana.8,9,10,11
He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents, Frederick P. Smith and Louise S. Resener.19 He appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, in the household of his parents.5
He used the shortened version of his given name, Frank R., exclusively as an adult, even for formal documents.3,20,18
Frank married first Carline Leshing, daughter of Fred Leshing and Miss Price, on 29 Nov 1892 in Huntington Co., Indiana, with Rev. L. C. Martin offciating.12,13,14
He was a clerk when he married, in 1892. By 1900 he had become a bicycle repairer.21,22
Frank and Carline appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, at 93 Railroad St., enumerated 6 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Their daughter Marie was listed as living with them, as was his father.20
Frank and Carline moved to Mishawaka by 1903, when they were living at 522 W. Joseph St.23 He was working as a machinist at Perkins Windmill Co., where he worked until at least 1912, and perhaps longer. Later records show he continued to work as a machinist, but do not indicate his employer.24,25,26
Frank and Carline appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Mishawaka, Saint Joseph Co., Indiana, at 310 West Lawrence St., enumerated 15 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their home. Their daughter Marie was listed as living with them.27

Frank married second Anna L. Kuhlman, daughter of Friedrich Heinrich Geltmayer and Varena Long, on 1 Apr 1918 in Huntington Co., Indiana, with Rev. John F. Noll offciating.15,16
The application for his second marriage license shows his occupation as truck dealer, but no other record shows him in that business, so it must have been short-lived. By 1919 he was a partner in the Acme Machine Co. at 415 S. Main St., Mishawaka.31,32,33,34
Frank and Anna appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Mishawaka, St Joseph Co., Indiana, at 204 W Girst, enumerated 16 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home. Jennie Van Holstein, age 68, shown as a cousin, was listed as living with them.35
Acme Machine Co. was acquired by Progressive Tool and Die Co. about 1925, with Franklin as vice president. That arrangement seems to have been brief, as by 1927 he had retired from his trade and was a salesman for Colpaert Realty Co. He was listed in the 1930 city directory as a representative, but his employer was not listed.36,34
Frank and Anna moved to Michigan about 1930, where he was a salesman for Pyrofax Gas Co., a supplier of bottled gas.37 They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Chikaming Twp., Berrien Co., Michigan, enumerated 7 May 1930, reporting they rented their home, for $25 per month, and did not own a radio.38
Frank and Anna returned to South Bend by 1932 when they were living at 813 Colfax Ave. He was listed as a salesman for an unidentified business that year, but is not shown as employed after that.39
Frank died on 2 Mar 1938, at his residence, 327 S Taylor, South Bend, St Joseph Co., Indiana, at age 73.17 He was buried on 5 Mar 1938 in Mishawaka City Cemetery, Mishawaka, St Joseph Co., Indiana.18
