Narrative:
Marie Sophie Charlotte Geltmeyer was born on 27 Nov 1831 on the Geltmeyer farm, near Brockum, Kingdom of Hanover.6,7,8 She was baptized on 4 Dec 1831 in Evangelische Lutherische Kirche, Brockum, Kingdom of Hanover, with Marie Elisabeth Frerking, Marie Louise Kuhlmann, and Marie Charlotte Fenneker as godparents.1She arrived in New York with her parents, Ernst Heinrich Kuhlmann and Elisabeth Fenncker, on 7 Jul 1832, aboard the brig Charlotte Louise, having departed from Bremen, Germany.4,14,15,16
As was the custom she used one of her middle names. After immigrating to the United States, the family returned to her father's birth surname, Kuhlmann, but "Americanized" by removing the final "n." So she was known as Sophie Kuhlman.2,3 The family settled first in Allentown, Pennsylvania.17,18
She moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with her parents after a short time.19
Her mother died in 1844 or 1845, when Marie was about 13 years old.20,21
She moved about 1844 to Wooster, Ohio, with her father, and perhaps with her mother, though it seems more likely she had died in Pennsylvania.22
She moved to Warren Twp., Huntington Co., Indiana, with her father in 1845.23,24,25,26 She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Huntington Co., Indiana, in the household of her father.27
Marie married Harmon Jacob Hartwig, son of William Hartwig, between 1850 and 1860, most likely in Huntington Co. but the marriage was not recorded there.9,10
Marie and Harmon appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Huntington, Huntington Co., Indiana, enumerated 4 Jun 1860, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $60. Their children Augustus and Angeline were listed as living with them.28
Sophie apparently died between 1862 and 1870, as no record has been found of her after the birth of her second daughter in 1862, and in 1870 her husband was rooming elsewhere and their children were living with others.11,12,13
