Narrative:

     John R. Flora was born probably on 16 Feb 1834, though other evidence shows 16 Apr and 10 May, in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania.6,7,8,9
     He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, George Flora, in the 1840 Federal Census of Air Twp., Bedford Co., Pennsylvania.15
     John appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McConnellsburg, Fulton Co., Pennsylvania, enumerated 19 Jul 1850, in the household of Richard Allender, a wagon maker, and his family. John is also listed as a wagon maker, though at age 16 he was more likely an apprentice or helper. His parents were apparently living close by as they were listed next in the census record.16
     John moved to Missouri before 1860. Apparently building on his training as a wagon maker he took up carpentry, a trade he pursued most of his life.17,18,19,20,21
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Spring Lake, Dent Co., Missouri, in the household of Samuel Hyer Jr. and Naomi Wilson, apparently boarding there. He reported real estate valued at $150 and personal estate of $100. Their daughter Amanda, his future wife, was also listed in the household.22
     John married Amanda E. Hyer, daughter of Samuel Hyer Jr. and Naomi Wilson, on 8 Apr 1862 in Dent Co., Missouri.10
     His wife died about 3 Aug 1869.23
     John appeared with his sons Samuel and Lewis on the 1870 Federal Census of Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, in the household of the parents of his late wife. He reported no real estate, but personal estate of $1,500.24
     John appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, enumerated 1 Jun 1880, apparently still living near his late wife's parents as they are listed as the fourth proceeding household in the census record. His children Samuel and Lewis were listed as living with him.25
     John appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, enumerated 22 Jun 1900, reporting that he owned his farm, free from mortgage. His children Samuel and Lewis were listed as living with him.26
     He continued to work as a carpenter, but by 1900 he was living on a farm he owned, apparently farmed by his two sons. By 1910 he was operating his farm himself. By 1920 he had retired and his son Samuel was operating the farm.27,28,29,21
     John appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, enumerated 4 May 1910, reporting that he owned his farm, free from mortgage.30
     John appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, enumerated 6 Jan 1920, reporting that he owned his farm, free from mortgage. His son Samuel was listed as living with him.31
     John died on 6 Dec 1922 in Watkins Twp., Dent Co., Missouri, at age 88.11,12 He was buried on 7 Dec 1922 in Lake Spring Cemetery, Lake Springs, Dent Co., Missouri.13,14
