Narrative:

Margaret Mariah Eveline Remington was born on 27 Jul 1848 in Castleton, Vermont.9,10,11
She appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, in the household of her parents, John Henry Remington and Betsey Mariah Stevens.17
Her mother died on 22 Mar 1852, when Margaret was 3 years old.18,19,20
Eveline later recalled that never in her memory was her father was never "of good health nor strong or able to do farm work and his children had to do most of it. "She said during the period 1857 through 1863 she did light farm work out of doors while her brother James took the heavy part, such as pitching on hay, holding the plough, etc, etc. She often loaded hay while he pitched it on, and drove the horses while he held the plough. After he died she had to take his place.21
The will of her mother's maternal grandfather, Lemuel Ransom, left her use for her lifetime of the Pond Farm in Castleton, containing about 96 acres, and a piece of wood land of about 15 acres. At her death the land was to be equally divided between her heirs. A copy of the will was recorded in Castleton deed books 28 Feb 1859, apparently to document transfer of ownership of the farm to Margaret and her four siblings. It seems likely that it was recorded after a delay of seven years from her death was because the eldest them was then reaching legal age.22
She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, in the household of her father and step-mother, Annis Baker Clark.23
By the time of her marriage she was using her middle name, Eveline, exclusively, and continued for the rest of her life.3,24,25
Margaret sold her one-fifth interest in the Pond Farm that she had inherited from her mother to her father on 15 Sep 1866, for $600.26 The same day he mortgaged the same one-fifth interest in the Pond Farm to her to secure a note for $450, to be repaid on demand with interest. The mortgage was marked paid in full 22 Jul 1871.27
Eveline married Carlos Fredrick Barber, son of Chauncey Langdon Barber and Lorinda Reed, on 21 Nov 1866 in Castleton, Vermont, with Rev. Lewis Francis officiating.12,13,14
Eveline and Carlos appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 27 Jul 1870, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $400. Their daughter Frances was listed as living with them.28
Eveline and Carlos appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Rutland, Rutland Co., Vermont, on Post Street, enumerated 12 Jun 1880. Their children Frances, Luella and Stella were listed as living with them, as was William Taylor, a 13-year-old Black farm laborer.29
Carlos and Eveline's son Chauncey, under two years old, was killed by a passenger train on the farm crossing between the family's dwelling and barns on 17 May 1892.30,31
Eveline and Carlos appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 9 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their farm. Their daughter Emma was listed as living with them, as was his father.32
Eveline and Carlos appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Poultney, Rutland Co., Vermont, on Gorhamtown Rd., enumerated 23 Apr 1910, reporting they owned their farm, free of mortgage. Their married daughter Grace was listed as living with them.33
Eveline and Carlos appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Poultney, Rutland Co., Vermont, enumerated 8 Jan 1920, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their grandson John Cross, son of their daughter Emma, was listed as living with them, as was William Couch, a 70-years-old laborer.34
Her husband died on 19 Feb 1923 in Castleton, Vermont.35,36
Eveline died on 2 Jun 1923 in Castleton, Vermont, at age 74.6,15 She was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Castleton, Rutland Co., Vermont.16
