Continuing the Civil War Pension Claim --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

A special examiner was dispatched to Greensbrug. He took testimony from Churchill, his son Joshua, and nephews Dyer Cobb Elder and John Frank Hazelrigg. He said in his report that he was sympathetic to Churchill's needs given his situation, describing him as feeling keenly the condition of his life, having once been rich and influential but now with a choice between "contributions of some ungrateful children and the poor house." He was living in one room of the house where he had lived with his wife, in which she had been given a life estate by her brother and he remained there "simply through indulgence of the heirs." But the examiner was very doubtful that Oliver's cause of death was linked to his service. He recommended that an examination be made in St. Louis to establish that the person who died there was actually Oliver.32
Churchill applied for a dependant's pension for himself based on the Oliver's Civil War service 20 Mar 1897.33,26 His claim was consolidated with that of his late wife. A special examiner was dispatched to St. Louis where he examined the hospital records and interviewed Thomas J. Christy on 9 Sep 1897. He concluded that the William alias Albert Christy who died there as Oliver, but was doubtful that his death resulted from his military service.34
The Medical Referee found that while there was evidence that soldier had contracted lung disease while in the service, there was not evidence that was the cause of death. Both claims were rejected 18 Oct 1897.35
Churchill appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Greensbrug, Decatur Co., Indiana, on Walnut St., enumerated 18 Jun 1900. His granddaughter Cora, daughter of his son Joshua, and her husband of nine months, Charles Gilmore, were listed as living with him.36
Churchill died on 20 Oct 1901 in Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana, at age 89.10,11 He was buried on 22 Oct 1901 in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana.12,13
