The Struggle for a Civil War Pension --- Text Stolen from ReigelRidge.com !! ---

Maria filed an application for a dependant's pension based on the Civil War service of her son Oliver 15 Jun 1891, while living on Ohio. The application was filed under the pension law of 27 Jun 1890, which somewhat expanded the terms for a parent's pension. Under this law, the parent had to be without means of support other than their manual labor or contributions by others not legally bound to support them when applying, not when the soldier died as under earlier law. The soldier must not have left a widow or minor children, and must have died from injury or disease originating during his service.31,32
Relatives and acquaintances provided affidavits in Dec 1891 and Feb 1892 stating that Oliver was the son of her and her husband; that they had no personal or real property except a life estate in a house in Greensbrug, Indiana, which was valued at $700 to $800; no income other than $6 per month rental of that house; that they were 80 years old and unable to do physical work; and that Oliver had not married and had no widow or chidren.33 New affidavits were submitted in the fall of 1893 from comrades describing Oliver's illnesses while in the service, from relatives describing his disabilities after he returned from the War, and from his cousin Thomas J. Christy and an acquaintance in St. Louis about his being there before his death.34
Maria and Churchill returned to Greensbrug in Nov 1893.35
The family become frustrated by the lack of progress in approving the pension, and enlisted the aid of long-time Congressman from Dearborn Co., William Steele Holman. He called up the case on 28 Nov 1893.36 This prompted a letter from the Bureau of Pensions dated 8 Dec 1893, stating that the date and cause of Oliver's death needed to be resolved. Hospital records show the name as William alias Albert Christy, and his cousin and acquaintance in St. Louis have no personal knowledge of the date or cause of death. She responded 19 Jan 1894 that she had no further evidence to offer, and citing the hospital records and testimony of Oliver's cousin and acquaintance showing he was the one who died there, requested that claim be adjudicated based on the evidence filed.37
Maria died on 25 Jun 1896, at her home, Greensbrug, Indiana, at age 84.13,14 She was buried in South Park Cemetery, Greensburg, Decatur Co., Indiana.15
The file indicates little action on the pension application until 5 Aug 1896, when the case was submitted to the Board of Review for a special examination.38
