Narrative:

     Ella Lee Cook was born on 28 Aug 1854 in Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky.8,9,10 He birth record shows her name as Ellen Cook, but no other record uses that given name. It is not clear whether her name was changed to Ella, or the name on the record was simply an error.4
     Her mother died on 3 Aug 1859, when Ella was 4 years old.19,20,21
     Ella appeared with her father on the 1860 Federal Census of Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky, in the household of Elizabeth Rose, her paternal grandmother.22,23
     She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Columbus, Hickman Co., Kentucky, in the household of her father, William Cook, and step-mother, Margaret [surname unknown].24
     Ella married first Dr. James Richardson Brewer, son of Dr. James M. Brewer and Rebecca G. Richardson, in Mar 1878.11,12,13
     Ella and James settled briefly in Arkansas after their marriage.25 They returned to Columbus, Kentucky, in 1879.25
     Ella and James moved to Franklin Co., Arkansas, in 1880.25 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Altus, Franklin Co., Arkansas, enumerated 3 Jun 1880. His niece, Fannie Locke, age 6, was listed as living with them, as were Isom Burrow, a teacher, his wife, their seven children and a nephew.26
     Ella and James moved to Muskogee, Indian Territory, about 1883.27 They moved to Pierce City, Missouri, in Nov 1886, staying there five months.28 They then moved to South West City, Missouri.27
     Ella and James returned to Muskogee, Indian Territory, in 1888.27,29 They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Muscogee, Creek Nation, Indian Territory, on Okmulgee Ave., enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home. Sarah Lewis, a 19-year-old servant was listed as living with them.30
     Ella and James moved to Savanna, Indian Territory, about 1902 so he could assume management of coal mines there.31,32
     James and Ella went to California for the winter of 1904 for his health, apparently staying in the village of Santiago, in Orange Co. Santiago was then the site of a mineral springs health resort.33,34
     Her husband died on 29 Dec 1904 in Santiago, California, where he had gone for his health.35,36,37,38
     Ella returned to Muskogee after her husband's death, if indeed she had moved to Savanna with him.
     Ella appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at 603 Callahan, enumerated 23 Apr 1910, reporting she owned her home, free of mortgage. Also listed in her household were five roomers: a clerk in a newspaper office, a lawyer, a printer, a civil engineer, and Anna Hamer, listed as unemployed.39
     Ella appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at 603 Callahan St., enumerated 5 Jan 1920, reporting she owned her home, free of mortgage. Also listed in her household were four lodgers: an assistant manager in a notions store, a railroad clerk, an insurance salesman, and his wife.40
     Ella married second John Wesley Gross, son of John Gross and Ann Marie [surname unknown], on 27 Apr 1922 in Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, with Rev. J. W. Israel, pastor, First Methodist Episcopal Church South, officiating.14,15
     Ella and John appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at 603 Callahan, enumerated 4 Apr 1930, reporting they owned a home valued at $1,500, and owned a radio.41
     Ella died on 6 Sep 1933 in Muskogee, Oklahoma, at age 79, at her home.16,17 She was buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma.18
