     John Wesley Gross was born on 9 May 1857 in Michigan.6,7,8
     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Park Twp., St. Joseph Co., Michigan, in the household of his parents, John Gross and Ann Marie [surname unknown].14 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Park Twp., St Joseph Co., Michigan, in the household of his parents.15
     John married Ida May Holtom, daughter of Richard Holtom and Isabel [surname unknown], on 19 Dec 1878 in Three Rivers, St. Joseph Co., Michigan, with Rev. S. Grosenbaugh offciating.9,10
     John and Ida appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Park, St Joseph Co., Michigan, enumerated 10 Jun 1880, Daniel Hening was also listed in the household, as a boarder.16
     John and Ida moved to Garden City, Missouri, in 1881.17 They moved to Paola, Kansas, by 1895.18 They appeared on the 1895 State Census of Paola, Miami Co., Kansas. Their children Mabel, Bertha, J., Lola and Cleora were listed as living with them.19
     John and Ida returned to Missouri before 1900.20 They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Camp Branch Twp., Cass Co., Missouri, enumerated 14 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children Mabel, Bertha, J., Lola and Cleora were listed as living with them.21
     John and Ida appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at 303 So Side Boulevard, enumerated 2 May 1910, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their children J., Lola and Cleora were listed as living with them.22
     He was a travelling salesman, selling hardware and farm machines.23,24,25,26 He had become a deputy sheriff by 1930.27
     John and Ida appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, at 710 North "E" St., enumerated 6 Jan 1920, reporting they owned their home, which was mortgaged.28
     His wife died on 31 Jul 1920.29
     John married second Ella Lee Cook, daughter of William Cook and Sophia Maria Cobb, on 27 Apr 1922 in Muskogee Co., Oklahoma, with Rev. J. W. Israel, pastor, First Methodist Episcopal Church South, officiating.11,12
