Narrative:

     Dr. James Richardson Brewer was born on 28 Feb 1849 in Black Forest, Gibson Co., Tennessee.7,8,9,10
     He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Gibson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his parents, Dr. James M. Brewer and Rebecca G. Richardson.19
     His mother died before 1860, apparently, as she does not appear with the family in the 1860 census.20 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Gibson Co., Tennessee, in the household of his father, Dr. James M. Brewer.20
     He entered Yorkville Academy, in Tennessee, in 1867, remaining until 1865. In 1867 and 1868 he attended Andrew College, Trenton, Gibson Co., Tennessee.6
     James moved to Columbus, Kentucky, where he was engaged in a mercantile business. He remained there until 1873.6
     He began the study of medicine in 1874, first with Dr. Sale, then with Dr. J. M. Taylor, of Corinth, Mississippi. He also took some courses at Vanderbilt University.6
     He began practicing in 1876, in Franklin Co. and Washington Co., Arkansas.6
     He resumed his university studies in the fall of 1877, graduating from the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, the following year.21,22
     James married Ella Lee Cook, daughter of William Cook and Sophia Maria Cobb, in Mar 1878.11,12,13
     James and Ella settled briefly in Washington Co., Arkansas, after their marriage, where he had resumed his practice.6 They returned to Columbus, Kentucky, in 1879.6
     James and Ella moved to Franklin Co., Arkansas, in 1880.6 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Altus, Franklin Co., Arkansas, enumerated 3 Jun 1880. His niece, Fannie Locke, age 6, was listed as living with them, as were Isom Burrow, a teacher, his wife, their seven children and a nephew.2
     James and Ella moved to Muskogee, Indian Territory, about 1883.23 They moved to Pierce City, Missouri, in Nov 1886, staying there five months.24 He was licensed as a physician in Missouri in 1886.25,26 They then moved to South West City, Missouri.23
     James and Ella returned to Muskogee, Indian Territory, in 1888, where he established a large practice.23,27 They appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Muscogee, Creek Nation, Indian Territory, on Okmulgee Ave., enumerated 4 Jun 1900, reporting they owned their home. Sarah Lewis, a 19-year-old servant was listed as living with them.28
     James and Ella moved to Savanna, Indian Territory, about 1902 so he could assume management of coal mines there. He was involved in opening some of the best coal properties in the Territory.29,30
     James and Ella went to California for the winter of 1904 for his health, apparently staying in the village of Santiago, in Orange Co. Santiago was then the site of a mineral springs health resort.31,32
     James died on 29 Dec 1904 in Santiago, California, at age 55.14,15,16,17 He was buried in Greenhill Cemetery, Muskogee, Muskogee Co., Oklahoma.18
