Narrative:

     Charles Pruetzel was born on 17 Jan 1840 in Waldeck, a small principality between Westphalia and Hesse-Nassau, which became part of Prussia, and later Germany.5,6,7 He was known to family as Carl, and seems to have sometimes used that name even in formal documents.1,13,14
     Charles immigrated in 1865 and was later naturalized.15,16
     At the time of his marriage, Charles was living in Minorstown, Missouri, which later became a part of the city of St. Louis.17 He married Marie Hertel, daughter of Christian Hertel and Elizabeth Boettcher, on 27 Nov 1865 in St. Louis Co., Missouri, with Rev. Agustus Cramer, pastor of the Evangelical Church officiating.8,9,10
     Charles was a truck gardener.18,19,20,21
     Charles and Marie appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of St. Louis, Missouri, enumerated 23 Aug 1870, reporting no real estate, but personal estate of $200. Their daughter Wilhelmine was listed as living with them.2
     Charles and Marie appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri, enumerated 10 Jun 1880. Their children Wilhelmine, Mary, Henrick, Johanna, Louis and Annie were listed as living with them.3
     Charles and Marie appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri, enumerated 26 Jun 1900, reporting that the family owned its farm, free of mortgage. Their children Henrick, Louis, Elizabeth, Clara and Fred were listed as living with them.13
     Charles and Marie appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri, enumerated 18 Apr 1910, reporting that the family owned its farm, free of mortgage. Their son Fred was listed as living with them, and their son Louis and his family apparently lived close by, as they appear as the second previous household.22
     His wife died on 18 Sep 1914 in Carondelet Twp., St. Louis Co., Missouri.23,24
     Charles died on 18 Mar 1924 in Lutheran Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri, at age 84.11,12 He was buried on 20 Mar 1924 in St. Lucas Cemetery, Sappington, Missouri.4
