He was known to family as Harry, and seems to have used that name even in more formal situations as he grew older.19,20,21,22
John moved to Ohio before 1870. He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Chillicothe, Ross Co., Ohio, enumerated 17 Jun 1870, as a resident of the Clinton House Hotel. His occupation was listed as gambler.23
John married Ida M. Mead, daughter of William Edgar Mead and Elmira C. Taylor, on 18 Oct 1872 in Ross Co., Ohio, with S. McAdow officiating.12,13,14
John and Ida settled in Columbus, Ohio, after their marriage.24 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, at 120 North High Street, enumerated 9 Jun 1880, in a multi-unit building with 17 families listed. Their son William was listed as living with them.25
He was a bookkeeper in 1880.26

Research Note, Mar 2024:
There is no direct evidence that Henry, son of Friedrich and Maria Wiemann and John H. "Harry" Wieman of Columbus, Ohio, are the same person. But the following evidence seems compelling. His niece Louise A. Fenker recorded that he was known as Harry, and lived to age 92. Based on his age in the 1850 and 1860 censuses, his death would have been about 1938. John H. of Columbus is the only "Harry" Wieman of that age found who died about that time in the region. His death certificate, with his daughter-in-law Rubie Fay Sill as informant, shows his mother as Hannah Rooseveldt of New York. But he consistently reported in census records both his parents were born in Germany. His informant was also informant for his wife's death certificate, and she provided accurate names for only one of her husband's other three grandparents. It seems likely she mistook John H's mother's maiden name Rothefeld for Rooseveldt, and simply had her birthplace wrong.32,33
