William Edward Perkins was born on 18 Sep 1885 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG.4,5,6
     His mother died between 1887 and 1900.11 William and his sister Eliza appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia, G in the household of Mary E. Britton, their late mother's sister.12
     He was reported to be attending school at age 14, when he was living with his aunt, but in the 1940 census he reported the second grade was the highest he completed, and in 1942 he signed his draft registration with an "X."13,14,15
     He generally used his middle name, Edward, as an adult.16,17,18
     William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 3 May 1910, in the household of Mary Brown and her sister, listed as a hired man.19
     William married Katie B. Conner, daughter of James Richard Conner and Sallie Ragland Watts, about 1919.7,8,9
     William and Katie appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 30 Jan 1920, reporting they rented their home.17
     William and Katie appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia, on County Road no 12 G, enumerated 15 Apr 1930, reporting they owned their farm, and did not own a radio.20
     William and Katie appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 8 Apr 1940, reporting they owned a home valued at $600, and that they had lived in the same house in 1935. Louise Ferrell, age 9 and shown as his second cousin-in-law, was listed as living with them.18
     He was a farm laborer by 1910. He was operating his own farm by 1920. He reported in 1940 that he had worked 48 hours the last week of March, and 50 weeks the prior year.21,22,23,24

     He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., VirginiaG, in the household of his parents, James E. Fallen and Elizabeth J. Tharp.12 He appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, in the household of his parents.13
     Lafayette married Henrietta Carrington Britton, daughter of William Edward Britton and Sarah E. Ligon, about 1877. He was the older brother of the woman her uncle, Melcajas A. Britton, would marry a year later.7,8,9
     Lafayette and Henrietta appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 4 Jul 1880. Their son Paul was listed as living with them.14
     Lafayette was not listed with his wife and children in the 1900 census and has not been found elsewhere. It is unclear whether he was actually living someplace else at the time, or was simply omitted in error.15
     Lafayette and Henrietta appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 19 Apr 1910, reporting they rented their farm. Their daughter Minnie was listed as living with them. Their sons George, with his wife and daughter, and William, with his wife and two children, were apparently living close by was they were listed as the second and third preceding households.16
     He was a farm laborer, presumably on the family farm, by age 17. By 1880 he was a farmer on his own.17,18,19,20,21
     Lafayette and Henrietta appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 31 Jan 1920, reporting they owned their home, free of mortgage. Their grandchildren, Hermon and Thelma Fallen, children of their son William, were listed as living with them.22
     Lafayette died on 11 Feb 1920 in Roanoke, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, at age 66.10 He was buried on 12 Feb 1920 in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie, Halifax Co., VirginiaG.11

     He was probably one of the two males age 5 to10 listed in the household of his father, Simpson M. Fallen, in the 1830 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., VirginiaG.12
     His father died before 1840, when James was about 15 years old.13 He was probably the male age 10 to 15 listed in the household of his father, Nancy A. Fears, in the 1840 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., VirginiaG.14
     James married first Elizabeth J. Tharp on 6 Dec 1844 in Charlotte Co., VirginiaG.7,8,9
     James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Charlotte Division, Charlotte Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 30 Jul 1850, reporting real estate valued at $152. Their children Emily and Charles were listed as living with them.15
     He was an overseer by 1850.16,17
     James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Charlotte Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 24 Sep 1860, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $200. Their children Emily, Charles, William, Laura, Richard, and Lafayette were listed as living with them.18
      James enlisted as a private in Co. A, 53rd Regiment, Virginia Infantry, 21 Apr 1862, at Suffolk, VirginiaG. He was discharged 17 May 1862 because he was over 35 years of age.19
     After the war he became a farmer on his own.20,21
     James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., VirginiaG, enumerated 13 Sep 1870, reporting no real estate but personal estate of $2,000. Their children William, Lafayette, Richard, Walter, Elizabeth, and Joel were listed as living with them.1
     James and Elizabeth appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 4 Jun 1880. Their children Richard, Walter, and Joel were listed as living with them.2
     James married second Mary C. Britton, daughter of Isham H. Britton and Mary W. Toot, on 20 Jun 1894 in Halifax Co., VirginiaG. She was an aunt of the woman his son Lafayette had married about 1877.10,11
     James applied for a disability pension based on his civil war service on 15 May 1900, while living at Watkins, Halifax Co., VirginiaG. He said he was totally disabled, being almost blind and very infirm. An annual pension of $30 was approved later that month. In his application he claimed to have served in Co. I, 56th Virginia Regiment of Volunteers. There was an L. H. Fallen who served in that company, who died while a prisoner of war. That discrepancy seems not to have been noticed.22,23
     James and Mary appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Roanoke, Halifax Co., Virginia G, enumerated 27 Jun 1900, reporting they rented their home. Etta C. Britton, his granddaughter and her niece, was listed as living with them.24
     James died on 10 Mar 1909 at age 85.5 He was buried in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie, Halifax Co., VirginiaG.3
