Rachel Melvina Fagin was born in May 1842 in OhioG.4,5,6
     Rachel and Philip Kaufman secured a marriage license on 29 Aug 1862 in Clermont Co., OhioG, but either did not get married then or the marriage was not properly recorded. They obtained a new license and were married four years later.1,12 Rachel married Philip on 25 Jan 1866 in Clermont Co., OhioG, with Rev. Edward McHugh officiating.7,8,9
     Rachel and Philip appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Ohio Twp., Clermont Co., OhioG, enumerated 27 Jun 1870, reporting no real estate but $200 in personal estate. Their children Kate and Alice were listed as living with them.13
     Rachel and Philip appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Fairbury, Jefferson Co., Nebraska G, enumerated 8 Jun 1880. Their children Kate, Alice, Jessee, John, and Emma were listed as living with them.14
     Her husband died on 3 Mar 1895, apparently, as she is shown as a widow in the 1900 census.15,16
     Rachel appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of York, York Co., Nebraska, at 5th St. G, enumerated 11 Jun 1900, reporting that she rented her home. Her children John, Emma, and Percy were listed as living with her.16
     Rachel appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska, at 1016 S. 11th St. G, enumerated 18 Apr 1910, reporting she was renting her home, apparently one floor in a multi-family bulding. Her son Percy was listed as living with her.17
     Rachel appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska G, at 2122 22nd St., in the household of her daughter Alice and her son. Alice operated a rooming house, which had three lodgers, John A. Ahlstrand, age 25 from Sweden, a salesman, Edward J. Mugan, age 34 from Ireland, a bookkeeper, and Sigel H. Hoard, age 50 from Michigan, a laborer.18
     Rachel died in 1932 at age ~90.10 She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Omaha, Douglas Co., NebraskaG.11

Ella May Grubb was born on 24 Apr 1874 in MissouriG.4,5,6 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lowell, Henry Co., Iowa, G in the household of her parents, Allen W. Grubb and Margaret Ann Murphy.13
     Ella married Charles Weller Shurtz, son of Frederick J. Shurtz and Sarah Elizabeth Riegel, on 3 Jun 1894 in Albany, Gentry Co., MissouriG, at the residence of the bride's parents, with Rev. William W. Burks officiating.7,8,9
     Ella and Charles moved 25 miles away to King CityG in Jun 1897, when Charles purchased the Columbian Restaurant there.14,15
     In Aug 1897 Ella traveled back to AlbanyG to be initiated into the Esther Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and to visit her parents there for several days.16
     It would appear that Ella May Grubb's second pregnancy was a difficult one. On 17 Dec 1897, a month before the birth, the local paper reported that she had been quite sick but now better. Two weeks later it reported that her husband had traveled to Albany to see her and she was "still quite poorly." On 7 Jan 1898 it reported he had again visited her and she was "not so well this week as last." Apparently it was considered unseemly to mention that her condition was related to pregnancy.17
     Ella died on 14 Jan 1898 in Albany, Gentry Co., MissouriG, at age 23, at her parents' home, in childbirth.10,5 She was buried in Highland CemeteryG.11,12

Narrative:

Allen W. Grubb was born on 18 Apr 1846 in McMinn Co., TennesseeG.4,5,6 He appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of McMinn Co., TennesseeG, in the household of his mother, Mahala Anderson.13 He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of McMinn Co., TennesseeG, in the household of his mother.14 He then moved to IllinoisG.15
     Allen married Margaret Ann Murphy about 1868 in IllinoisG.7,8,9
     Allen and Margaret settled Missouri after their marriage, remaining there six or seven years.15 They appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Lee Summit, Jackson Co., MissouriG, enumerated 11 Jun 1870. Their daughter Evelina was listed as living with them.16
     Allen and Margaret moved to IowaG around 1875, remaining there nineteen years.15 They appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Lowell, Henry Co., Iowa G, enumerated 18 Jun 1880. Their children Ella and Frank were listed as living with them.17
     Allen and Margaret moved to Albany, Gentry Co., MissouriG, around 1895.15
     He was a laborer in Missouri in 1870, a carpenter in Iowa by 1880.18,19 Shortly after he became a "traveling man," or traveling salesman. At his death he was described "one of the best known ... in northwest Missouri." In his last two years he worked for a St. Louis firm selling groceries, being called in one report "the grocery tourist."20,21,22
     In late Aug or early Sep 1899 Allen was injured when a train he was boarding started unexpectedly, breaking two ribs. He did not think it serious at the time, but soon afterwards was forced to return home, where he stayed a week or two and seemed to improve. He started work again but soon had to return home again, where it was determined that the fractured rib was causing heart trouble, and he died a short time later.23,24
     Allen died on 1 Oct 1899 in Albany, Gentry Co., MissouriG, at age 53, at his home.4,10,11 He was buried on 3 Oct 1899 in Highland Cemetery, Albany, Gentry Co., MissouriG, next to his daughter Ella and her two children.12,3
     Allen carried a "large life insurance," amounting to $12,500 including the accident provisions. A post mortem was deemed important to determine the cause of death and thus whether the accident provison applied.25
