Huldah Norton1,2

ID# 17641

Parents:

FatherWilliam Norton
MotherSarah
Chart MembershipDescendants of Gideon Cobb

Key Events:

Marriage: 22 Dec 1768, Windham, Connecticut, William Cobb (b. 21 Oct 1742, d. 1792)3,4

Narrative:

Huldah married William Cobb, son of Gideon Cobb and Abigail Dyer, on 22 Dec 1768 in Windham, ConnecticutG.3,4
No evidence has been found of William and Huldah in Pawlet, Vermont, so it seems they did not move there with his parents and brothers. A 1907 family history reported that they lived in Windham Co., ConnecticutG, so perhaps they returned there from Stillwater, New York, if indeed his wife and children ever joined him in New York.5
Research Note, Feb 2022:
Huldah's parents are identified solely based on one, supposedly well-researched, source. No other record of them has been found. Several online trees claim, without documentation, that she was the daughter of Matthew Norton and Mary Daggett, born 16 Apr 1729 in Edgartown, Massachusetts. If that is correct, how she came to be married n Windham, Connecticut is a mystery. No evidence has been found that her parents or any if her siblings ever lived there. If she was their daughter, she apparently died before her father, in 1779, as she does not appear with her then-living siblings in his will.6,7

Children:
      Children with William Cobb

The names William and Sarah Cobb were not uncommon in the region. While a number of records with those name have been found, none other than their birth records are identifiable as William and Huldah's children.

Esther and Henry moved to Vermont Settlement, near Warsaw, New YorkG, spring of 1808 where they built a log cabin and proceeded to clear the land. But Henry was soon taken sick and died.4 (See map.)
Her husband died on 2 Sep 1808 in Moscow, Genesee Co., New YorkG.9,10,11
Esther evidently moved back to OrwellG with her two young daughters following her husband's death.12 She appeared on the 1810 Federal Census of Orwell, Rutland Co., VermontG, with a household consisting of two females under age 10 (daughters Eliza and Mary), and one age 26 to 45 (herself). She was evidently living near her father-in-law, as she is listed on the line following his household.13
Esther married second Ira Barber on 16 Feb 1814.6,8 She was probably the female age 30 to 40 listed in the household of her husband, Ira Barber, in the 1830 Federal Census of Mendon, Monroe Co., New YorkG, though she was actually about 45.14

There are no Cobbs listed in Genesee Co. in the 1810 census, suggesting Philip Cobb's death date of 1808 is more likely correct.

Roxana Worden1,2,3,4

Parents:

FatherIchabod Worden (24 Jan 1761 - 1 Nov 1844)
MotherMargaret Brown (abt 1763 - 6 Aug 1845)
Chart MembershipDescendants of Gideon Cobb

Key Events:

Birth: 4 Mar 1794, Vermont,5,6,7
Marriage: 18 Oct 1819, Rochester, New York, Gideon Cobb (b. 26 Jun 1791, d. Aug 1864)8,9,10
Death: 21 Apr 1863,11,12
Burial: 24 Apr 1863, Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New York,13,14

Narrative:

Roxana Worden was born on 4 Mar 1794 in VermontG.5,6,7 She was probably one of the two females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Ichabod Worden, in the 1800 Federal Census of Halifax, Windham Co., VermontG.15
Roxana married Gideon Cobb, son of John Cobb and Mary Fuller, on 18 Oct 1819 in Rochester, New YorkG, with Rev. C. Williams officiating.8,9,10 She was probably the female age 16 to 26 listed in the household of her husband, Gideon, in the 1820 Federal Census of Brighton, Ontario Co., New YorkG.16 She was probably the female age 30 to 40 listed in the household of her husband in the 1830 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG.17
After their marriage in 1819 Roxana moved into Gideon's small log cabin. With his success in business, they built a proper home, a magnificent 22-room Greek Revival mansion on 300 acres of forest, near the village of Brighton, on the southeast edge of Rochester (the area was annexed by Rochester in 1905). But seemingly true to Cobb tradition, a rear wing of the mansion was built for use as a stagecoach tavern. The tavern wing included a large baking kitchen, milk storage room, and a separate meat-grilling room, with a brick floor and large brick ovens.18,19,20
The tavern was apparently short-lived however. In 1833 the Cobbs attended a temperance meeting in the brick schoolhouse which stood across Monroe Ave. from the Cobb home. The meeting turned into quite a rousing affair with Deacon Fischer expounding on the evils of liquor. When the sermon ended, the charged entourage bolted to the nearest tavern, which just happened to be the rear wing of the Cobb's home. They proceeded to remove all the liquor and smashed the kegs of liquor in the street. A fire was started, quickly turning into a blazing inferno, and lighting up the evening sky like the northern lights. The tavern was reportedly never opened again.21
She was probably the female age 40 to 50 listed in the household of her husband in the 1840 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG.22
Roxana and Gideon appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, enumerated 18 Sep 1850, reporting real estate valued at $24,000. Their children James, Margaret, William, Maria, and Frances were listed as living with them, as were five laborers, aged 16 to 30, and Margaret Martin, age 22, no occupation given.23 Her sister Senah and her husband, and his sister Sarah and her husband, were apparently living close by as they are listed in the next dwelling in the census record.24
Roxana and Gideon appeared on the 1855 State Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New York G, enumerated 15 Jun 1855, reporting that they lived in a brick house valued at $4,000. Their children William and Frances were listed as living with them, as were her brother, Lyman Worden, and Robert Robertson, a 15-year-old Canadian-born servant.25
Roxana and Gideon appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, enumerated 13 Dec 1860, reporting real estate valued at $30,000, and personal estate of $1,000. Also listed as living with them were her brother Lyman Worden, five children whose relationships are unknown: Elisa H. Cobb, age 10, William Warner, age 12, and Charles F., George P. and Daniel J. Crosmon, ages 12, 8, and 4; and two people apparently servants, Caroline Myers, age 15, a servant girl, and Thomas Smith, age 25, a laborer.26
Roxana died on 21 Apr 1863 at age 69.11,12 She was buried on 24 Apr 1863 in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New YorkG, next to her husband, in his lot.13,14
Research Note, 21 Sep 2009:
Warren Kling in his Epitaph article says that Gideon and Roxana had daughters Maria and Sophia, both in 1849, who died quite young, then had a second daughter Maria who married and settled in Kansas. The Monroe Co. GenWeb tombstone inscriptions page shows Sophia, their daughter, died in 1821. The 1850 census shows a Maria, age 19, apparently a daughter. There may have indeed been an earlier Maria, but an 1849 birth date for the two girls seems clearly in error.21,27,28
