     Curtis appeared on the 1830 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Henry), one age 5 to 10 (unknown), and one age 20 to 30 (himself), and one female age 20 to 30 (wife Eliza.)13
     Curtis appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Gates, Monroe Co., New YorkG, with a household consisting of two males under age 5 (sons William and Edward), one age 10 to 15 (Henry, and one age 30 to 40 (himself), two females under age 5 (daughters Maria and Ann), and one age 20 to 30 (wife Eliza.)14
     Curtis and Eliza and their family moved to Genesee Co.G between 1840 and 1850. They appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Byron, Genesee Co., New YorkG, enumerated 27 Sep 1850, reporting real estate valued at $2,856. Their children Ann, Maria, William, and Edward were listed as living with them.2
     He was a farmer.15,2,16,17,18,4,19 In 1850 he reported having 49 acres of improved land and 16 unimproved, valued at $2,856, and $160 worth of tools and implements. He reported three horses, one milch cow, four other cows, and four swine, valued at $440. He reported that he had produced 300 bushels of wheat, 50 of Indian corn, 110 of oats, 60 of potatoes, and 75 of buckwheat in the year ending 1 Jun 1850. He had also produced 300 lb. of butter and 15 tons of hay and slaughtered $55 worth of livestock.20
     Curtis and Eliza and their family moved to Orleans Co.G between 1850 and 1855. They appeared on the 1855 State Census of Barre, Orleans Co., New YorkG, enumerated 7 Jun 1855, reporting they lived in a framed home valued at $1,000. Their children Ann, Maria, William, and Edward were listed as living with them.21
     Curtis and Eliza appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Carlton, Orleans Co., New YorkG, enumerated 11 May 1860, reporting real estate valued at $3,500 and personal estate of $1,000. Their children Ann, Maria, William, and Edward were listed as living with them.16
     In 1860 he reported having 62 acres of improved land and 9 unimproved, valued at $3,500, and $100 worth of tools and implements. He reported five horses, five milch cows, 19 sheep, and five swine, valued at $800. He reported that he had produced 200 bushels of Indian corn, 75 lb. of wool, 80 bushels of peas and beans, 100 of potatoes, 100 of barley, 110 of buckwheat, and $100 worth of orchard products in the year ending 1 Jun 1860. He had also produced 150 lb. of butter, 10 tons of hay, four lb. of beeswax and 70 of honey, and slaughtered $65 worth of livestock.22
     Curtis has been found listed in the Federal Tax lists under Internal Revenue act of 1 Jul 1862, which was passed to raise revenue during the Civil War. In 1865 he was assessed $1.00 in taxes on a carriage valued at $60 , and 60¢ for the slaughter of six swine.23
     Curtis and Eliza appeared on the 1865 State Census of Carlton, Orleans Co., New YorkG, enumerated 24 Jun 1865, reporting they lived in a framed home valued at $1,000. Their children Ann, Maria, William, and Edward were listed as living with them.17
     Curtis and Eliza appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Gaines, Orleans Co., New YorkG, enumerated 18 Jun 1870, reporting real estate valued at $6,000 and personal estate of $1,370. Their children Ann, Maria, and Edward were listed as living with them.18
     Curtis and Eliza appeared on the 1875 State Census of Gaines, Orleans Co., New YorkG, enumerated 12 Jun 1875, reporting they lived in a frame home valued at $1,500. Their children Ann and Maria were listed as living with them. Their eldest son, Henry, and his family were apparently living close by, as they were listed as the second preceding household.4
     Curtis and Eliza appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Gaines, Orleans Co., New York G, enumerated 9 Jun 1880. Their children Ann and Maria were listed as living with them.19
     In the 1880 census Curtis reported owning 54 acres of tilled land, ten of meadow, and six in woodland, valued at $4,900, tools and implements worth $113, and $375 worth of livestock. He reported that he had spent $15 in repairing fences in the prior year and $20 for four weeks of hired labor. He reported two horses, three milch cows which had dropped three calves and produced 200 lb. of butter the prior year, and 37 chickens that had produced 190 dozen eggs. He reported that he had produced 50 bushels of corn on four acres, 35 of oats on one acre, 45 of wheat on three acres, 60 of dry beans, 90 of potatoes on one acre. He produced 150 bushels of apples on 150 trees on five acres and 50 of peaches on 125 trees on one acre, together worth $105. He had also produced 15 tons of hay on 15 acres, with another six acres of grassland not mown. He had cut 55 cords of wood worth $82, for a total value of all products of $572.24
     His wife died on 30 Oct 1889.25,8
     Curtis died on 24 Jan 1891 at age 86.11,8 He was buried in Mount Albion Cemetery, Albion, Orleans Co., New YorkG.12
     Curtis died intestate (without leaving a will) and letters of administration for his estate were issued on 28 Jan 1891 in Orleans Co.G to his sons Henry and William, after they posted a bond of $600.26,27

     Her father died on 2 Sep 1808, when Mary was an infant.14,15,16 She was probably one of the two females under age 10 listed in the household of her father, Esther Bennett, in the 1810 Federal Census of Orwell, Rutland Co., VermontG.17
     Mary married Benjamin Cowles, son of Sylvester Cowles and Sarah Northrup, on 10 Feb 1830, with Rev. Joel Parker officating.7,8,9
     She was probably the female age 30 to 40 listed in the household of her husband, Benjamin Cowles, in the 1840 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG.18
     Mary and Benjamin appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, enumerated 17 Sep 1850, reporting real estate valued at $3,400. Their children Jane, Esther, Minerva, Norman, Henry, and Roswell were listed as living with them, as were Sarah Northrop, age 91, apparently a relative of his mother, perhaps her step-mother, and Thomas English, a laborer.19
     Her husband died on 22 Jan 1855.20,21

     Mary appeared on the 1865 State Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, in the household of her son Norman and his wife, Frances.24 Mary appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, in the household of Norman and his wife.25 She appeared on the 1875 State Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, in the household of Norman and his wife.26
     Mary appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Albion, Orleans Co., New York G, enumerated 18 Jun 1880, in the household of Jerome and Lydia Mason and their two children. She is identified as a aunt, but the actual relationship is unknown. Jerome or Lydia may have been a relative of her father or step-father, or of her husband.27
     Mary died on 11 May 1897 in Jefferson, OhioG, at age 89, at the home of her son Norman.10,11,12 She was buried in Brighton Cemetery, Rochester, Monroe Co., New YorkG.13
     Mary moved to Ohio with her son Norman and his family.

     Benjamin appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Brighton, Monroe Co., New YorkG, with a household consisting of one male under age 5 (son Norman), one age 20 to 30 (himself, though he was actually 34), one female under age 5 (daughter Minerva), two age 5 to 10 (Jane and Esther), one age 30 to 40 (wife Mary), one 40 to 50 (perhaps his mother), and one 70 to 80 (perhaps his grandmother.)13
