Chart MembershipDescendants of Jacob K. and Christiana Ohl Riegel

Key Events:

Birth: 18 Sep 1857, Indiana,4,5,6
Marriage: 20 Sep 1888, Phillips Co., Kansas, William David Riegel (b. 25 Jan 1850, d. abt 1924)7,8,9
Death: 3 Nov 1925, Finley Twp., Webster Co., Missouri,10
Burial: 3 Nov 1925, Mountain Dale Cemetery, Webster Co., Missouri,11

Narrative:

Mary J. Quakenbush was born on 18 Sep 1857 in IndianaG.4,5,6
She appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Highland Twp., Greene Co., IndianaG, in the household of her parents, John Quakenbush and Permelia Jewel.12 She appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Worthington, Greene Co., IndianaG, in the household of her parents.13 She appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Highland Twp., Greene Co., Indiana G, in the household of her parents.14
Mary married William David Riegel, son of Jacob K. Riegel and Christiana Ohl, on 20 Sep 1888 in Phillips Co., KansasG.7,8,9
Mary and William appeared on the 1895 State Census of Glenwood Twp., Phillips Co., Kansas, at Crow G, reporting that he had moved to Kansas from Missouri, and she from Indiana. Their children Ida, John, Alice, and Frank were listed as living with them.15
Mary and William appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Sumner Twp., Phillips Co., Kansas G, enumerated 28 Jun 1900, reporting that the family owned its farm on government land. Their children Ida, John, Alice, Frank, Leta, James, and Iva were listed as living with them, as was Leonard W. Cottrill, a 23-year-old farm laborer.16
Mary and William moved to MissouriG about 1905 leaving several of their children with neighbors for a time.17,18
Mary and William appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hazelwood Twp., Webster Co., Missouri G, enumerated 3 May 1910, reporting that the family owned its farm, which was mortgaged. Their children Ida, Alice, Leta, James, and Iva were listed as living with them.19
Not surprisingly, there is evidence that her husband's incarceration created hardship on Mary's family. Her youngest son, James, who was 13 at the time, returned to Kansas, where his older brother had stayed, and he was working on a farm there by 1918. His twin sister, Iva, received her mother's permission to marry at age 15, in 1913. And apparently her eldest daughter's husband had taken over the family farm, and Mary was living with then by 1920. Mary appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Hazelwood Twp., Webster Co., Missouri G, in the household of William Meek Hoggatt, her son-in-law, and his two children, apparently on the farm her husband had owned.20
Mary died on 3 Nov 1925 in Finley Twp., Webster Co., MissouriG, at age 68.10 She was buried on 3 Nov 1925 in Mountain Dale Cemetery, Webster Co., MissouriG.11

Burial: 17 Jun 1973, San Marcos City Cemetery, San Marcos, Hays Co., Texas,2

Narrative:

Alice Matilda Reigle was born on 7 Nov 1891 in Franklin, KansasG.4,5,6
She appeared on the 1895 State Census of Crow, Glenwood Twp., Phillips Co., KansasG, in the household of her parents, William David Riegel and Mary J. Quakenbush.10 She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Sumner Twp., Phillips Co., Kansas G, in the household of her parents.11

Alice married Jesse Bryant Ipock, son of Joseph B. Ipock and Nancy Jane Copley, on 8 Jul 1912 in Wister, LeFlore Co., OklahomaG, with Rev. J. D. Craftree, Baptist minister, officiating.7,8,9
Where Alice and Jesse were living after their marriage is unclear. Each was living in Missouri in 1910, but they both reported they were living in Wister, OklahomaG, when they married. How they came to be living there is a mystery, though it seems possible she was anxious to escape the disruption caused by her father's incarceration six months before. Where they lived afterwards is equally unclear. Various records show their four earliest children as born in Missouri, Texas, and in Oklahoma.15,16,17 One of the more credible record shows their second son, born in Jan 1917, as born in Hartshorne, OklahomaG, some 50 miles west of Wister. However Jesse, at least was clearly back in Missouri by June of that year.18,19
Alice and Jesse appeared on the 1920 Federal Census of Mountain Grove, Wright Co., Missouri G, enumerated 7 Jan 1920, reporting that they owned their home, which was mortgaged. Their children Everett, Lester, and Opal were listed as living with them.20
Sometime between 1920 and 1930 Alice's husband dropped his surname and adopted his middle name as a surname. He, his wife, and their children then used the surname Bryant in all contexts.21,22,23,24
Alice and Jesse moved with their children to TexasG by 1929. They appeared on the 1930 Federal Census of Comal Co., Texas G, on a pasture road to Blener Highway No. 46, enumerated 17 Apr 1930, reporting that they rented their home, and did not own a radio. Their children Everett, Lester, Opal, and Ruby were listed as living with them.25
Alice and Jesse appeared on the 1940 Federal Census of Wimberley, Hays Co., Texas, at Dripping Springs & Glin Rd G, enumerated 27 Apr 1940, reporting that they rented their home for $10 per month, and had lived in the same county in 1935. Their children Lester, Opal, Ruby, and Nellie were listed as living with them.26
Alice and Jesse appeared on the 1950 Federal Census of Hays Co., Texas, on San Antonio Highway G, enumerated 20 Apr 1950, reporting they lived in a home that was not on a farm.27
Alice died on 15 Jun 1973 in San Marcos, Hays Co., TexasG, at age 81.2 She was buried on 17 Jun 1973 in San Marcos City Cemetery, San Marcos, Hays Co., TexasG.2

Narrative:

Leta E. Reigle was born on 23 Aug 1895 in KansasG.4,5,6
The earliest record found for her, the 1900 census, shows her name as Yletta. That may have been her name given at birth, but all other records show her first name as Lettie or Leta.16
She appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Sumner Twp., Phillips Co., Kansas, G in the household of her parents, William David Riegel and Mary J. Quakenbush.17
She moved to MissouriG with her parents.18,19 She appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Hazelwood Twp., Webster Co., Missouri G, in the household of her parents.20
Leta moved to Crane, MissouriG, by 1916 when she as listed as a teacher in a Sunday School rally.21 She moved to CaliforniaG by 1924.22
She was a graduate nurse, living in Albuquerque, New MexicoG, when she married.23,24

Leta and Clyde were apparently divorced by 1950, as he appeared in the 1950 census with another woman listed as his wife. No record of a divorce, or of his remarriage, have been found. Her obituary lists him as her husband and his sister as her sister-in-law, and shows the sister's address as the "family home" even though Leta was listed as living elsewhere. But she is listed as widowed in the 1950 census, which is not uncommon for divorced people.10,11,12
